Hughes tops two IMCA Modified features, Thornton collects final Stampede checkers

ARDMORE, Okla. (March 7-9) – Jason Hughes was a double winner before Ricky Thornton Jr. made his way to victory lane at Southern Oklahoma Speedway’s Southern Stampede special. New Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational candidate Hughes was the $2,000 IMCA Modified winner on Thursday and the $1,000 winner on Friday. Thornton paced Saturday’s $3,000 to win event. The IMCA car count for the second annual Stampede topped 100 and included 51 Modifieds. Hughes had to reel in Jared Hoefelman for the opening night lead, then won ahead of Thornton and defending IMCA Red River Tour champion Chris Elliott. The Sooner State speedster led every circuit on Friday. Thornton repeated as runner-up while Rodney Sanders rounded out the podium finishers. “I’m happy with the weekend. Fantastic forecast for Southern Oklahoma Speedway’s March 7-9 Stampede

Sustaire is first in IMCA Red River Modified Tour finale

By Mike Spieker ARDMORE, Oklahoma (June 1) – Kevin Sustaire dominated Friday’s feature to close out the IMCA Red River Modified Tour at Southern Oklahoma Speedway. Already on the Fast Shafts Invitational ballot, he earned $1,500 for the victory while Chris Elliott was the best driver through six rounds and earned the inaugural tour championship. Thirty-one IMCA Modifieds rolled off three-wide to start the tour finale. Sustaire wasted no time moving to the front as he charged from the middle of row two to the lead on the opening lap. A caution on lap two regrouped the field. On the restart, Cory Davis and Matt Guillaume filed into second and third, respectively, as Sustaire showed the way. A few more cautions kept the field bunched up, but the second half of the race had a long green flag run. IMCA Modifieds on Friday card at Southern Oklahoma

ARDMORE, Okla. – IMCA Modifieds make their first of seven Friday night appearances at Southern Oklahoma Speedway on April 20. Pit gates and the grandstand both open at 5 p.m., hot laps are at approximately 6:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Jet Racing Central Region or Razor Chassis South Central Region, Oklahoma State and track points will be awarded. Other upcoming Friday events for IMCA Modifieds at Southern Oklahoma are May 18, June 1 and 15, July 20, Aug. 17 and Sept. 14. The Sprint Series of Oklahoma is also on tomorrow night’s card at Ardmore. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $10 for ages 6-12 and free for five and under. Pit passes are $30.

Doherty wins Southern Stampede opener, Taylor tops IMCA Modifieds on night two

ARDMORE, Okla. (March 9-10) – ‘B’ qualifier Jeff Taylor brought his ‘A’ game to Southern Oklahoma’s Speedway and nearly had a Southern Stampede sweep to show for his efforts. Taylor ended in second on Friday after Brad Doherty’s high-side heroics netted him the opening night IMCA Modified checkers. Taylor then dueled with Brendon Gemmill before holding off Nick Roberts for the $1,200 victory on Saturday. “I’d been to Ardmore before to help other guys but this was the first time I’d ever raced there. It’s a very racy track,” said Taylor, who started 19th on Friday and from the 13th spot on Saturday. “It was exciting. I had a good car both nights and was able to run wherever I wanted.” Taylor went from third to first with five laps left in the Saturday show. Kelly, Wood stampede to checkers in Sprint Series of Oklahoma at Ardmore

(March 9 and 10) – Chris Kelly and Joe Wood Jr. followed different lines to the same destination when the Sprint Series of Oklahoma opened as part of Southern Oklahoma Speedway’s Southern Stampede special. Kelly found the bottom before all others as he took the lead near midway point and never looked back to claim the Friday feature and $700 in the IMCA RaceSaver series presented by Smiley’s Racing Products/Hoosier Racing Tires Southwest lidlifter. Wood took the lead early and cruised along the top side to Saturday’s $750 checkers. Running fourth on lap 10, Kelly quickly disposed of Blake Daccus for third and moved into the runner-up position by passing Gary Owens on lap 12. Sustaire captures Dirt Dominator win at Southern Oklahoma

By Mike Spieker ARDMORE, Okla. (March 8) – Kevin Sustaire of Emory, Texas won round three of the Dirt Dominator Thursday night at Southern Oklahoma Speedway and took home the $1,000 payday. Sustaire matched up against Nick Roberts of Des Moines, Iowa, in the final round of the head-to-head, two and a half lap dash bracket race. Roberts won the coin toss and was awarded lane choice. Roberts elected the preferred bottom lane but Sustaire powered around him on the outside through the first set of corners. From there Roberts had to play catch up. Sustaire opened his advantage to three car lengths coming to the white flag. As the duo headed into the final set of turns, Roberts drove his car deep into turns three and four, pulling right up to the rear bumper of Sustaire. ARDMORE, Okla. – Four IMCA divisions are on the ticket for Southern Oklahoma Speedway’s March 9 and 10 Southern Stampede special. IMCA Modifieds make their Ardmore debut, racing for $800 to win on Friday and $1,200 to win in their Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier on Saturday. Minimum start money is $100 each night. Sprint Series of Oklahoma features for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars pay $700 to win on Friday and $750 to win on Saturday. Start money for each show is $250. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Southern SportMods both race for $400 to win and $75 to start on Friday and $500 to win and $90 to start on Saturday. Southern Oklahoma says OK to IMCA Modifieds

ARDMORE, Okla. – Nine dates for IMCA Modifieds are on the 2018 schedule at Southern Oklahoma Speedway. The division runs both nights of Southern Oklahoma’s season-opening IMCA Weekend Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10. Friday night events will also be held April 20, May 18, June 1 and 15, July 20, Aug. 17 and Sept. 14.
