Gould inherits opening night Red River Tour win

ARDMORE, Okla. (July 1) – It’s not the way he wanted to win but William Gould went home with the $1,000 IMCA Modified checkers from Wednesday’s Red River South Tour opener at Southern Oklahoma Speedway.

Gould was third across the stripe but inherited the win when Tyler Stevens and Chaz Baca were both disqualified in post-race tech for front suspension violations.

Gould had gotten caught up in a fender bender in his heat race, won his ‘B’ feature and started the main event from 11th. 

“This was the first time we’ve even had a good run in the tour. It seems like we’ve always had motor problems or something before,” said Gould, who changed two flats on the trailer and got home about the time the sun was coming up the next morning. 

“The top of the track stayed dominant. At the start of the night the track was fast all over but it moved up as the night went on,” he continued. “We had a good run up to third and at one point I thought I had a second place car. I just couldn’t get there.”

Chris Elliott and Josh McGaha would round out the top three. Gould was already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.

Shelby Williams won both the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car and Smiley’s Racing Products Southern SportMod features at Ardmore.

Round two of the five-night Lone Star Super Gas Red River Tour South presented by Smiley’s Racing Products is Thursday at Grayson County Speedway.

Sustaire captures Dirt Dominator win at Southern Oklahoma

By Mike Spieker ARDMORE, Okla. (March 8) – Kevin Sustaire of Emory, Texas won round three of the Dirt Dominator Thursday night at Southern Oklahoma Speedway and took home the $1,000 payday. Sustaire matched up against Nick Roberts of Des Moines, Iowa, in the final round of the head-to-head, two and a half lap dash bracket race. Roberts won the coin toss and was awarded lane choice. Roberts elected the preferred bottom lane but Sustaire powered around him on the outside through the first set of corners. From there Roberts had to play catch up. Sustaire opened his advantage to three car lengths coming to the white flag. As the duo headed into the final set of turns, Roberts drove his car deep into turns three and four, pulling right up to the rear bumper of Sustaire. Whitwell wires Corona Kicker foes at Southern Oklahoma

ARDMORE, Okla. (May 1-2) – After winning his heat race, R.C. Whitwell knew he’d be going into Friday’s Corona Kicker IMCA Modified feature with a fast car.  And after leading start to finish of the main event at Southern Oklahoma Speedway, the Tucson, Ariz., driver collected a $1,250 check for his latest Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying vic­tory.  Fifty-six Modifieds contested at the opening night show in Ardmore and nine states were repre­sented in the evening’s headline event. Pole starter Whitwell ran the bottom most of the 20-lapper, go­ing to the top in the second set of turns to work through lapped traffic and outrunning Ethan Braaksma to the checkers.  “The car was pretty decent in the heat race handling-wise. Clement capitalizes in IMCA All Star Shootout opener

ARDMORE, Okla. (May 24, 2023) – He bided his time and then Mitchell Clement banked $1,000. Clement won Wednesday’s All Star Shootout opening night feature for Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds at Southern Oklahoma Speedway, capitalize on race-long leader Troy Morris III’s bobble following a restart with nine laps to go. “I had a really good car,” Clement said after starting ninth and working his way into the top three midway through the 25-lapper at Ardmore. “I knew I just had to be patient.” Morris, from Bakersfield, Calif., and the current Junior National Champion points leader, drew the pole start and kept William Gould and then Josh McGaha at bay before back-to-back yellows on lap 17.
