DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Ryan Dolan took home one of the biggest prizes from the Iowa State Fair Monday night: A check for $3,000. If you’re going to win a Deery Series race, that’s the one,” said Dolan, who started outside Joel Callahan on the front row. “It was just a fantastic night of racing.” “I followed Callahan for a couple laps and took the lead when he pushed up,” he continued. “The track was fast and I thought with the way the car was handling, I’d be tough to pass.” Scott Fitzpatrick was a career-best second. Darrel DeFrance finished third, point leader Justin Kay was fourth and Callahan ended in fifth. The fast-paced feature was delayed just twice by caution, when Josh Most slowed on lap 17 and again when Jason Rauen’s engine expired with eight laps left. Dolan’s previous [Read More]

Tonight’s Deery Series event in Independence is canceled

By Ryan Clark INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (Aug. 6) – With wet weather in the area and an increased threat of rain later this afternoon into the evening, officials have canceled tonight’s Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models event at Independence Motor Speedway. The event, which was also rained out on its original date of July 1, will not be made up. “The weather has affected us all year and tonight is no different,” said promoter Darin Burco of S&B Promotions. “It isn’t a decision we wanted to make,” he continued, “but it’s one we don’t take lightly.” With an increased chance for rain in Independence around the time hot laps were scheduled to start, Burco said the last thing he wanted to do is force people to drive from all over the state just to get rained out with no make-up date available. “We’ve talked to meteorologists who tell us the track of the weather will change and we’ll get wet around 6 p.m.,” he said. “I used to race the Deery Series and [Read More]

Kay wins a wild one in Dubuque Deery

DUBUQUE, Iowa (July 13) – He’s won six straight races at Dubuque Speedway this season and eight in a row dating back to last year. But Justin Kay has never won a race anywhere like he did at Dubuque on Sunday night. Kay inherited the lead in the Deery Brothers Summer Series main event when Mike Murphy Jr. broke with seven circuits left in the IMCA Late Model tour 50-lapper. Brian Harris then came from deep in the field to challenge before getting into the wall with two to go. Five lead changes, eight cautions and plenty of excitement preceded Kay’s $3,000 payday, the third this season and second straight for the top driver in the series point standings. “It was a wild night, that’s for sure. Apparently, being the leader wasn’t the place to be,” Kay said. “Murph had the car to beat and would have won if he hadn’t broke. I was right next to Harris when he hit the wall. He was going for it all.” Murphy, Dan Shelliam and Kay split [Read More]
