Center, Schultz race to Classic checkers at Arizona Speedway

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (May 24-25) – Eric Center outran his nephew while Brian Schultz raced from worst to first. Both earned $1,000 for Memorial Weekend IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature wins at Arizona Speedway’s John Morris Classic and earned berths on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Center collected the first win of his 31st racing season on opening night at Apache Junction. He’d started fifth in the Saturday show, was up to third before a lap five yellow and spent most of the 20-lapper running alone in the bottom groove with Guy Norton higher up on the oval. His nephew Cody Center made a late charge from 13th starting to second. Werkmeister is Stock Car series winner at WaKeeney

By Mike Hughes WaKEENEY, Kan. (May 26) – Casey Werkmeister made his move in lapped traffic and ended up in WaKeeney Speedway’s victory lane on Memorial Day. Werkmeister topped the Dirt Track Central Jax Sports Grill Great Plains Series for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, earning $750 for his efforts. Series point leader Mike Nichols had shot out to the early lead in the 25-lap event, chased by Werkmeister, Angel Munoz, Jason Rogers and Jeff Tubbs. The top five remained the same at the halfway mark, then the lead duo got caught up in heavy lapped traffic before Werkmeister got by Nichols for the lead. The top two continued to battle their way through traffic but Werkmeister held on for the win and the $750 paycheck. Nichols finished in the runner-up spot in the caution-free race, with Rogers, Munoz and B.J. Wagoner rounding out the top five. Ward tops XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour opener at I-35

MASON CITY, Iowa (May 26) – A driver from Arizona who won a state championship in Nebraska found success in Iowa Monday night. Tim Ward led most of the XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour main event at I-35 Speedway. He’d gotten the front spot back from J.J. Wise before rain forced the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature to be called after 16 of the scheduled 25 laps. “The car was really good. We were really fast,” said Ward, racing out of Laurens and teammate of 2010 series champion Mike Jergens this season. “I got a good starting spot but I think I could have started further back and still had a chance to get to the front.” Two cautions interrupted the series-opening night contest. Ward slipped under Wise following the second restart to regain the lead. The victory paid $1,000. Fleming scores Friesen Chevrolet Empire State win at Skyline

CORTLAND, N.Y. (May 25) – Sunday’s Friesen Chevrolet Empire State Series feature saw Chris Fleming complete a holiday weekend sweep of at Skyline Raceway. Already the winner of Saturday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature at Cortland, Fleming held off Gary Roberts and hard-charging Bumps Scutt for the tour victory, his career third. Gary Smith and James Cornell completed the top five. The early stages of the feature saw Fleming work his way forward from deep in the field. A series of cautions kept the field bunched up and by the time the 10th lap went up on the board, Fleming had made his way to the lead. Most of the race was run off a few laps at a time as a series of minor spins and mishaps led to numerous cautions. The final yellow came with four laps remaining and set up a four-lap dash to the finish between Fleming and Roberts. Guss outruns Rauen for Boone Deery Series checkers

BOONE, Iowa (May 26) – After enjoying a long run at the front early on, Ray Guss Jr. needed to pass Jason Rauen twice in the last two laps to win the Memorial Day Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Boone Speedway. Guss started on the pole and led the first 30 of 40 laps in the IMCA Late Model tour main event Monday evening. Rauen caught up in traffic however and made his move to the front when Guss was slowed by a lapped car on the lower line on the 31st circuit. The yellow light came on as the Rauen and Guss were coming to the white flag. They’d swap the lead after the restart before a slight bobble by Rauen opened the door again for Guss on the final lap. Strayer is quickest at Quad City’s Reinhart Memorial

By Brad Hines EAST MOLINE, Ill. (May 25) – Sunday was a night of firsts for Jake Strayer. The IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified rookie made his first-ever visit to Quad City Speedway and won the 21st annual Gary Reinhart Memorial. The $1,200 victory was his first in just eight career starts in the class and put Strayer on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “Going to East Moline was a spur of the moment thing,” he said. “We pulled off the heat win and then won the feature. Everything went in our favor. It was definitely a night I’ll never forget.” Strayer started 10th in the 30-lapper and did most of his passing on the lower line coming out of the turns. He was in front just before midway and was pressured most of the way, holding off a late challenge from two-time defending track champion Greg Durbin, who had started 18th. Hogan drives home with top Modified Madness cash

By Mike McGuire DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 23) – A very long green flag run ended with Scott Hogan in victory lane Friday night at Davenport Speedway. Hogan caught race-long leader Darin Duffy with three circuits left in the 50-lapper and held on to the checkers in the $2,000 to win IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified Madness feature. The green light stayed on for the last 34 laps and the main event had the look of its first repeat winner in Duffy. He started on the pole and led the first 47 laps before the third-starting Hogan charged by coming to the flagstand. “Fifty laps is a long time and there were just two yellows. It got really dicey there for a while,” admitted Hogan, already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. “(Doug) Crampton was right there, too, but we got through the lapped traffic OK and then got spread out again.” Duffy was higher up on the oval when Hogan used the middle line to complete the pass for the lead. McDaniel tops round 2 of Nor-Cal Challenge Series

ANTIOCH, Calif. (May 10) – It wasn’t a pretty win but Randy McDaniel’s run to the $1,000 Saturday checkers at Antioch Speedway put him on the ballot for the upcoming Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. McDaniel survived a crash-filled IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event in the latest installment of the Nor-Cal Challenge Series. He made a pit stop to repair damage early in the race, managed to re-enter the track without losing a lap and found himself in the lead on the final restart, with Troy Foulger chasing him in a very battered car. Third place finisher Tom Purcell was the happiest of the drivers afterwards. A full-time engineering student at the University of Nevada, Reno, had never raced at Antioch Speedway before. Woods makes most of late race restart in SST feature at Abilene

ABILENE, Texas (May 10) – A restart with five laps left proved to be the opportunity Dustin Woods needed Saturday night at Abilene Speedway. Woods went all the way to the top of the oval after the Sprint Series of Texas main event went back to green, passed Sean Mayfield for the lead and stayed in front to the finish of the 20-lapper. The victory was his IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour first and second of the season. He’s in the same Triple X Chassis as last year while armed with a new Russell Shoulders Racing Engines package. “I finally got it figured out,” Woods said following the win. He’d started fifth and stayed near the front from the first circuit on. Dailey delivers with late pass in Fairmont North Star show

FAIRMONT, Minn. (May 9) – Tenth starting Eric Dailey was first following a green, white, checkered finish to the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature in Friday’s Redline Racing Parts North Star Series feature at Fairmont Raceway. After running third much of the way, Dailey had slipped into second before getting caught in a multi-car tangle on the 25th and final circuit. He went low and caught leader Josh Meyer on the final turn for the victory, his series career and division-leading fifth. Meyer, Jay Noteboom, Roger Nielsen and Tad Reutzel completed the top five. Nielsen also advanced nine positions while Reutzel was a plus seven spots. Derek Green started on the pole and led all 15 times around the track in topping the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event.
