Like lightning, Springsteen streaks to Deery Series checkers at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (April 12) – With a thunderstorm in the forecast, Colby Springsteen proved lightning-fast on the track Saturday night at West Liberty Raceway. Springsteen caught Nick Marolf in traffic on the 10th circuit, then ran away with the win in the Deery Brothers Summer Series main event, leading the last 30 laps and taking the checkers nearly half a straightaway in front of Jeff Aikey. The IMCA Late Model tour feature was slowed by caution just once, on lap 12. Aikey and early leader Marolf swapped second following the restart; Aikey got the spot for good with 10 laps left but couldn’t muster a challenge to Springsteen, who earned $3,000 for the victory. Andy Eckrich starts 17th, finishes first in Deery Series opener at Davenport

DAVENPORT, Iowa (April 11) – Andy Eckrich couldn’t have asked for a better opening night finish when the Deery Brothers Summer Series took to the track at Davenport Speedway Friday evening. Eckrich raced from 17th starting to win the IMCA Late Model tour lidlifter, reeling in Matt Ryan midway through the 40-lapper and then holding off Justin Kay in a closer than comfortable final circuit. The victory paid $3,000 and was Eckrich’s Deery career seventh checkers. Kay, Ryan, Colby Springsteen and Tyler Bruening completed the top five while defending series champion Brian Harris was sixth. Outside pole starter Ray Guss Jr. was pulling away from the rest of the field before a lap five yellow. Stacey Mills shortens to-do list with Modified feature win at Algona North Iowa Frostbuster

ALGONA, Iowa (April 5) – Stacey Mills’ racing to-do list got shorter Saturday night. Mills held off Mike Jergens to prevail in a green, white, checkered finish and earn $1,000 for the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature win at Algona Raceway’s season-opening North Iowa Frostbuster. “This is my first $1,000 win. I’ve been trying to do that for a long time,” the new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot candidate said. “It was a good race. We had a good night. Everything worked out perfect for us.” After winning his heat from the third row, Mills drew the inside row four start from the main event. He had the lead before midway of the 20-lapper. Gearhart checks out on Spring Fling IMCA Modified foes

By Mike Hughes WaKEENEY, Kan. (March 30) – Cody Gearhart checked out on everybody in winning the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature at WaKeeney Speedway’s Spring Fling special. Marty Clark had jumped out to the early lead in Sunday’s headliner only to slide off the backstretch on lap three and go to the tail of the field. That gave the front spot to Gearhart, who sped off and left the field way behind en route to the $1,000 payday. Dylan Sherfick chased Gearhart but had to settle for second, followed by Jeremy Frenier, Tim Watts and Kyle Rohleder. Gearhart was already on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Taylor brings broom to Batesville and sweeps Mid-America Modified Championship features

BATESVILLE, Ark. (March 20-22) – Jeff Taylor’s North Dakota car is pretty fast in Arkansas, too. Taylor swept the three Mid-America Modified Championship features at Batesville Motor Speedway, earning $1,500 for each of his Thursday, Friday and Saturday IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature wins. “I’ve never won three nights in a row. I’ve won twice before but this is the first time I’ve ever done that,” said Taylor, new to the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. “I had a really good race car all three nights and a lot of help getting it that way. It was a pretty neat deal all the way around.” The Taylor Chassis ride is one he’s raced previously in North Dakota. Marlyn Seidler brought it south. Opening night honors at Beatrice belong to Grabouski

BEATRICE, Neb. (March 21) – A familiar face was back in victory lane following the headline event on opening night of Spring Nationals at Beatrice Speedway. Jordan Grabouski earned $2,000 for the Friday night IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified checkers. The victory was his career fifth at Spring Nationals and IMCA 96th. “I found the middle to the top of the track, kept the car straight and kept my momentum up,” said Grabouski,” who had started sixth and passed David Murray Jr. for the lead on the eighth of 30 laps. “This is a new car and I was fortunate to have a really fast ride right out of the box. Frontrunners were mixed up with lapped traffic before a caution with nine to go. Taylor is best in Mid-America Modified Championship opener at Batesville

BATESVILLE, Ark. (March 20) – There was no shortage of out-of-state talent on the track but opening night honors at Batesville Motor Speedway’s Mid-America Modified Championship belonged to a driver from fairly close to home. Jeff Taylor led the last four laps in topping the Thursday feature for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds. The $1,500 victory put him on the ballot for this September’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. He’d started third in the 25-lapper, fell back to fifth and then had to pass Jacob Murray, Spencer Wilson and Jared Siefert before setting his sights on Ken Schrader. Schrader was making his first IMCA start of the season. The front two were running with lapped cars when they got together in an incident that saw Taylor emerge with the lead.
