Deery Bros Late Model Summer Series

Kossuth County Deery checkers fly for Callahan

ALGONA, Iowa (July 7) – Joel Callahan and Jeff Aikey were the big winners Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway. While Callahan paced the Deery Brothers Summer Series main event and earned $2,000, Aikey edged Tyler Bruening by all of one point to top standings for the first half of the IMCA Late Model tour season for a $2,500 prize. The 30-lap main event ran caution-free. Callahan started on the pole and was not seriously challenged as lapped traffic never became an issue and the closest Bruening could get in the waning circuits was four car lengths back. Cayden Carter, Charlie McKenna and Ryan Dolan completed the top five. Carter was also the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing winner. Callahan’s win was his Deery career fifth and second this season. Skies over Algona were dark earlier in the evening, with a tornado warning to the north and storm warnings all around, but a rainbow greeted Late Model drivers as they drove onto the track for their main event. The ninth event of the 30th annual [Read More]

Independence checkers make Fitzpatrick first repeat Deery winner

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 6) – Scott Fitzpatrick took home a prize better than any blue ribbon Wednesday night. Fitzpatrick became the first repeat winner in the 30th annual Deery Brothers Summer Series, topping the 40-lap main event for IMCA Late Models at Independence Motor Speedway. The Buchanan County Fair special checkers were worth $2,000. Fitzpatrick passed pole starter Jon Passick on the sixth circuit and led to the end of the 40-lapper. Denny Eckrich pulled close twice before Fitzpatrick got a lapped car ahead just after midway. The race had boiled down to a two-car battle, with Matt Ryan alone in third and points leader Jeff Aikey by himself in fourth, before the final caution came out with 12 laps left. Fitzpatrick then pulled away from the pack to win easily in front of Eckrich, Ryan, Aikey and Cayden Carter, who’d started 16th. Tyler Bruening took the initial green from 17th and ended in sixth. Provisional starter Andy Eckrich raced from shotgun on the field to ninth for hard charger honors. Fitzpatrick had won for the first [Read More]

Richie Gustin outruns Shute for career second Hogan Memorial feature victory

VINTON, Iowa (July 3) – Richie Gustin didn’t recall a lot of drama while en route to winning the Hogan Memorial in 2012. Larson teaches high side clinic in Shawano’s Fury at the Fairgrounds

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (June 26) – Jeff Larson was the first car to hit the track for hot laps Saturday at Shawano Speedway and it paid dividends for the Illinois racer. Larson won the third leg of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified Cheesehead Triple Crown and left the track with $5,000, a huge trophy thanks to the Kim Parsons Memorial Trophy Tour and a spot on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Larson and Jerry Wilinski raced wheel-to-wheel following the initial green with Wilinski holding the slightest of leads. Wilinski continued to lead as Larson ran right near the wall trying to gain an advantage.  What would be the final caution of the 30-lap feature flew after lap five. As the race went back to green, Larson again tiptoed along the wall and took the lead from Wilinski. Larson then put on a clinic on how to race inches away from the wall as Wilinski battled Kelly Shryock for second and Konnor Wilinski, Jerry’s son, battled with Jay Noteboom for fourth. [Read More]

Kirchoff masters traffic in Interstate Challenge Series opener

By Dru Brown BILLINGS, Mont. (June 25) – Eddie Kirchoff’s mastery of lapped traffic helped make him the opening night winner in the Interstate Challenge Series. Kirchoff outran Tripp Gaylord and Kenny Baumann Saturday at Billings Motorsports Park, earning $1,000 for his Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory. The evening’s 25-lapper featured some of the best Modified drivers in the Larry Shaw Racing Western Region and right as the green flag came out, the race for the lead was three wide. Kirchoff took the point on the low line.  Baumann wanted none of that, however, fought back on the high line and took the lead. The game of leapfrog had begun as Kirchoff stayed steady on the bottom, looked low and stole the lead back. Gaylord, meanwhile, was running third and catching up to the two frontrunners. Kirchoff began building a sizeable lead. Gaylord and Baumann swapped the second spot back and forth, but Gaylord proved to be too strong and took the runner up position. By this time, Kirchoff was in heavy lapped traffic [Read More]
