Riedner races to $1,099 checkers at Luxemburg’s Soukup Memorial

By Greg Aregoni LUXEMBURG, Wis. (June 17) – Brandon Riedner loved his trip to Luxemburg Speedway. He loved the trip so much he went home $1,099 richer courtesy of his 30-lap Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod John Soukup Memorial feature win. Todd Wiese came into night as the defending race winner defending the home turf. Riedner came in as the visitor trying to steal the show and did just that. Wiese led from the drop of the green flag and through a series of early cautions which allowed Riedner to join the race for the win. Riedner showed his racer on lap 20 and made what proved to be winning move on lap 23. Riedner flew past down low and into the lead. Wiese gave chase up on top and actually gained on the leader only to bobble with a couple laps remaining. Deadlines near for IMCA rookie, contingency sign-up forms

VINTON, Iowa – Two deadlines loom right around the corner that IMCA drivers need to be aware of. First is the Friday, July 1 deadline for rookie of the year applications to be submitted to the home office. Rookie drivers can also call Director of Membership and Virginia Lindsey to sign up for that program. Second is the Monday, Aug. 1 deadline to send in contingency sign-up forms and proof of decal placement car photos. Both can be directed to Marketing Director Kevin Yoder. “Rookie applications are due a month earlier than they have been in the past but the date to have sign-up forms and car photos in remains Aug. 1,” noted Yoder. “Either way, it’s important to get them in as soon as possible.” Sign-up forms were included in decal packets mailed after drivers purchased 2016 competitor’s licenses while the rookie application is published in the point section each month in Inside IMCA. “Both forms are also posted on our website so they are easily accessible,” said Yoder. “If their car is beat up, [Read More]

Paul wins first of season at Osky

By Jeremy Fox OSKALOOSA, Iowa (June 15) – Austin Paul visited victory lane for the first time this season at Southern Iowa Speedway, following Wednesday’s KBOE Radio IMCA Northern SportMod main event. Paul held off Matthew VanGelder early and later denied the hard-charging Curtis VanDerWal to take his first local checkers since last August. VanDerWal was second ahead of Carter VanDenBerg, VanGelder and Jason McDaniel. In the Musco Lighting IMCA Modified feature, Scott Dickey appeared to be heading to the win as he led the first 13 laps but points leader Colt Mather grabbed the top spot away on lap 14 and went on to pick up the win ahead of Dickey, Zack Vander Beek, North Carolina’s Kyle Strickler and California’s Cody Laney. Cayden Carter cruised to his seventh straight Budweiser IMCA Sunoco Stock Car win. Danny Thrasher repeated in the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks and Shane Evans paced the Mach-1 Sport Compacts for his first SIS victory since opening night.

HRN columnist Jim Brennan dies

OMAHA, Neb. – The racing community is mourning the passing of one of its own. Long-time Hawkeye Racing News columnist Jim Brennan of Omaha, Neb., passed away Friday, June 10 at the age of 67. “Everyone who has been associated with racing for any of the past 40-plus years knew Jim and the passion he had for our sport,” IMCA President Brett Root said. “Jim made countless friends through racing. We extend our sympathies to his family.” Survivors include his wife Donna; children Karen McIntosh, Steve Weyant and Kimberly Cash; six grandchildren; brother Thomas and sister Mary Jane Hendricks; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were this morning (Wednesday) at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church in Omaha. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery.

Duke is latest PASS winner at Clinton County

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (June 10) – The third Pennsylvania Sprint Series event of the season at Clinton County Raceway produced the third different winner Friday night. Ken Duke started on the pole for the 20-lap feature and held off the late race challenge of Scott Lutz for the checkers. Lutz had started fourth but couldn’t keep up with the pace Duke ran early on. A two-time track champion at Lock Haven, Duke had one close call late in the contest when he and Lutz got together going into turn one. “I didn’t see him there going into turn one and we kind of got together a little bit. I really did not mean to chop him, I don’t like to race like that,” Duke said. “We were in the right spot to start on the pole to get the win.” Lutz, who won on opening night, settled for second. Frye, Gottschalk repeat at RPM

By Mike Hughes HAYS, Kan. (June 11) – Tyler Frye and Daniel Gottschalk made repeat appearances in the winner’s circle at RPM Speedway Saturday evening. Marty Clark took the lead at the drop of the green in the Gib’s Auto Supply IMCA Modified feature until Frye took over the lead on lap seven. After a three-car tangle on lap nine to bring out a caution, Frye led the field back to green. Mike Petersilie chased Frye down and took control on lap 13, only to have Frye regain the lead on the following lap and hold on for his second win at Hays this year. Clay Money got by Petersilie late for the runner-up spot with Dylan Sherfick and Jeremy Frenier rounding out the top five. Adam Weber took the lead in the 20-lap Karl Chevrolet SportMod feature but spun on lap four, giving the lead to Tyler Watts for the restart. Snyder paces Modifieds, Olson tops SportMods at Iowa Donor Network/Urbana 5 Night special

VINTON, Iowa (June 12) – Tony Snyder raced his way onto the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot while Tony Olson took home the biggest check from Sunday’s Iowa Donor Network/Urbana 5 Memorial Night at Benton County Speedway. Snyder held off hard chargers Racer Hulin and Kyle Brown for the $1,000 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory. Olson collected his second big payday of the weekend, pocketing $1,400 for his Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod win. One hundred and fifteen cars were counted in the pit area. Other winners on the evening included Damon Murty in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and August Bach in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. Scott Hogan led the first two times around the track in the Modified main before fellow front row starter Snyder used the lower line to pass for the lead. Osborn keeps Lincoln County streak alive

By Kelly Ninas NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 11) – The oval had many racing grooves for the competitors to challenge for supremacy at Lincoln County Raceway Saturday evening. Finding the fastest grooves to were Colton Osborn, Zach Schultz, Casey Werkmeister, Jacob Olmstead and Andrew Baumgardner as all found themselves in the winner’s circle at the end of the evening. Continuing his streak was Osborn, as he captured yet another Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory. Osborn started in the third row and took little time to become in the lead group. He passed Dave Pedersen on the 10th lap and never looked back. Pedersen ended as the runner-up and Jay Steffens was third. It was a family battle at the front of the field during the final laps of the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature with Zach and Dillon Schultz going head-to-head. Withhuhn is latest first-time winner at Dodge City

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (June 11) – Toby Witthuhn added his name to the list of IMCA SportMod winners at Dodge City Raceway Park Saturday night. Witthuhn gunned into the lead on the opening round and leading all 15 laps to become the sixth different winner of the year and 15th different winner in the last 17 events. Witthuhn went from third to first on the opening lap and then kept Brian May and Jeff Kaup behind him the rest of the way with Kevin Tabor and Bart Baker rounding out the top five. Clay Sellard rebounded from a mid-race, one position penalty to take his first 20-lap win of the season in the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. Kilgore takes $1,000 win at 141

Van Pay to slide job city in the $1,000 to win Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature, the second installment of 141 Speedway’s Red, White and Blue series. Jay Matthias led the opening lap from the pole. Mike Mashl charged to the outside and grabbed the lead on the second circuit, then moved down on the track, which allowed Van Pay and Kilgore to make it to the leader’s back bumper. Van Pay stayed high on the track with Kilgore and they garnered the top two spots on lap 13. Van Pay stayed in command until the sole caution flew with five laps remaining. Kilgore worked his racer down low with Van Pay working the top shelf. With two laps remaining, Kilgore performed the perfect slide job off turn two and snatched the lead.
