Carter, Van Eaton capture night 2 Dirt Duel qualifiers

By Josh Reynolds STUART, Iowa (June 2) – Brayton Carter and Todd Van Eaton won qualifying features on night two of Stuart Speedway’s Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel. Qualifying for Wednesday’s 50-lap Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature was set by four heats and two “B” features. Carter and Colby Langenberg brought the field to life with Carter taking control early. Cautions bunched the field up a few times but Carter was up to the challenge each time and went on to the win. Carter, Brian Osantowski, Colby Fett and Johnathon Logue were the top four cars that locked into Wednesday’s big show. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars followed the same exact format as the SportMods with Todd VanEaton and Joe Zrostlik on the front row. VanEaton took control on the bottom side of the track and never looked back, taking the flag to flag, caution-free win. Schrader scores opener at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (May 30) – Kenny Schrader took the early lead and then schooled the IMCA Modified field following a late restart Saturday at The Quick Quarter of the Springfield Raceway. For Schrader, the opening night win marked a special moment as the very popular driver celebrated to the date his first-ever race and first-ever win 49 years ago. He’d also celebrated his 65th birthday just a day earlier. Schrader, in his Federated Auto Parts Modified, took the early lead from Derek Watson after starting third in the 20-lap Bad Boy Mowers feature. Out in front, Schrader opened a half-a-track lead until a late caution bunched the field as fast moving Steven Bowers Jr. was getting the chance to try and steal the thunder at Jerry Hoffman’s high banked racy oval. (May 30) – Christian Rumsey removed “almost” from his resume Saturday night, winning the two-month-delayed 2020 season opener for the Pennsylvania Sprint Series at Selinsgrove Speedway. Rumsey led the final two laps after advancing from 14th starting and collected the winner’s trophy for the 20-lap PASS victory on a night when 51 IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars battled on the historic Snyder County half-mile track. It was the first Sprint Car feature win for the 21-year-old from Middletown, N.Y. Last year in PASS competition, Rumsey was almost always near the front, with eight top-five finishes, including a pair of seconds, in just 11 starts. “We started out pretty good tonight,” he said. “My crew chief Ryan, he made a lot of great changes and kept us on track all night. Wilson tops stout Boyd field for Texas Sprint Series win

BOYD, Texas (May 29) – The higher line took Chad Wilson to the front of the Texas Sprint Series feature field Friday at Boyd Raceway. The lower line kept him there. Wilson started the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car 20-lapper from ninth, found a line to his liking higher up on the oval and passed Brandon Howle for the lead before midway. He moved to lower grooves from that point and won ahead of Lucas Scherb and Logan Scherb. Zane Lawrence and Jeb Sessums completed the top five. Thirty-six cars vied in the second TSS show of the season. “It was a stout field for sure and definitely one of the most fun races I’ve been in,” Wilson said following his first win of 2020. Paris, Zevenbergen prevail on Dirt Duel Night 1

By Josh Reynolds STUART, Iowa (June 1) – Shane Paris and Elijah Zevenbergen prevailed in their respective qualifying features on opening night of Stuart Speedway’s Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel. Qualifying for Wednesday’s 50-lap Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature was set by four heats and two “B” features. Paris and Dylan VanWyk put on a show through lapped traffic until a caution bunched everyone up with just a handful of laps left, and it was Paris pulling away to the comfortable win. Cody Thompson finished second with VanWyk third and Carter VanDenBerg fourth. Those four drivers will make up the inside of the front four rows for the main event on Wednesday. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars followed the same exact format as the SportMods and this was a barnburner with Jake Masters setting the pace early. Nelson repeats in Hobby Stocks, Sauerman, Schmidt, Sachau also post Boone wins

By Joyce Eisele BOONE, Iowa (May 30) – Boone Speedway saw another big car count for its Saturday night racing program with 199 race cars checked into the pits and Dylan Nelson repeated his win from last week in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock division. The Hobby Stocks ended the night’s racing with their 15-lap feature event. Braden Richards led the troops in the early going of the race but Nelson was quickly up to challenge him by lap three. By lap five, Nelson had taken over the top spot and was successful in warding off Richards the rest of the way to the checkers. Richards held the second spot, Eric Knutson came from 11th starting to take third place, fourth was Solomon Bennett, and Shane Butler completed the top five. Cory Sauerman took home the victory in the IMCA Modified contest and it was 12th starting Jay Schmidt making a last-lap pass for the win in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division. Elston tops IMCA Late Model opener at Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 29) – Opening night IMCA Sunoco Late Model honors belonged to Tommy Elston Friday at Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Ron Boyse and Elston led the field to green, with Boyse edging out Elston by a nose at the line to lead the first of 20 laps. But Elston used the momentum off the top of the track to grab the lead away from Boyse on lap two. Denny Woodworth, who started fifth, slipped past Boyse on lap three to take over the runner-up spot and from there Woodworth tried to stay in Elston’s tire tracks. CJ season opens with See, Smith scoring IMCA wins

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 29) – The 2020 racing season got underway Friday night at CJ Speedway with IMCA wins going to Jason See and Jacob Smith. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event took the green with veteran Kirk Kinsley setting the pace. Kinsley would lead until the midway point when See was able to move his number 79S to the outside of Kinsley and into the lead. See took the checkers ahead of Kinsley and John Hemstead. Smith drove a perfect race in scoring the win in the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature. The race ran caution-free with Smith leading flag to flag. Brad Havel took second ahead of Jeffrey DeLonjay. With Covid-19 regulations still in place racing was allowed but without fans in the grandstand. Fortunately the regulations will be eased on June 1 allowing racing to be held with fans in attendance beginning this Friday, June 5.

Briese breezes to Kossuth County checkers

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (May 28) – Jason Briese led a fast field of IMCA Modifieds to the flag stand and all the way to the checkered flag Thursday night at Kossuth County Speedway. Briese built a comfortable advantage early as there was a four-car battle for second between Nick Meyer, Jeremy Mills, Brandon Beckendorf and Kelly Shryock. Austin Wolf joined that group to create a six-car breakaway through the first half of the race. Mills took over the runner-up spot at the half way mark of the feature as it was a three-car breakaway by then with Briese, Mills and Shryock. Briese continued to hold the top spot and the only delay to his appearance in the winner’s circle was a yellow flag on nine as the Cleghorn driver gladly took the double checkered flags from flagman Logan Kelly first. Rain wins out at U.S. 36 Raceway for May 29

OSBORN, Mo. – Due to rain and saturated grounds, U.S. 36 Raceway officials have canceled racing for May 29. Up next at U.S. 36 Raceway is the Bud Shootout featuring the Sprint Series of Nebraska and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. Grandstands open at 6 p.m., with hot laps at 7:30 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $18 for senior and military and children and 12 and younger are free.
