Kay tops Drive For 5 finale at Pepsi Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (Sept. 19) – Justin Kay made his way to victory lane to claim a $2,000 top prize following the final installment of Pepsi Lee County Speedway’s Shottenkirk Parts Express Drive For 5.  After two rounds of heat races, Matt Ryan and Andy Eckrich accumulated the most passing points to lead the feature field to the drop of the green flag. Ryan jumped into the lead over Eckrich and Darin Duffy. While Ryan paced the field out front, Eckrich, Andy Nezworski, Kay and Tommy Elston, who started ninth, swapped positions second through fifth over the next 10 laps.  Action was slowed by back-to-back yellows on lap 10. The second restart saw Ryan charge back out front with Kay moving into the runner-up spot over Nezworski. After 25 laps were scored complete, the race was halted and teams could make adjustments on their cars during a 10 minute stop. Once back to green, Elston used the middle to top groove to pass Ryan coming out of turn four to take over the lead. Elston held [Read More]

PASS win at Williams Grove puts Hanson, team ‘in happy land’

By Frank Buhrman  MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 18) – Sometimes a win is more than just a win.  Like when the driver wins for the first time in more than five years and has only recently became a new father.  Like when it all happens at Williams Grove Speedway, a track where that driver has finished every position second through sixth but never won.  And like when the owner wins for the first time in 44 years at the track and is in the pits on his stepson’s wedding weekend. Jaremi Hanson’s win on Friday night met all those criteria, leading to an outpouring of congratulations for him and car owner Rod Ort, also director of the Pennsylvania Sprint Series. Hanson led all the way in the 20-lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature, fending off early challenges from fellow front-row starter John Walp and a late charge from defending series and national champion Ken Duke Jr.  Hanson said in victory lane that he wasn’t nervous “at the beginning” about his prospects for the win (because he [Read More]

Schmidt follows egg toss with season’s first SUS win

CLEVELAND, Texas (Sept. 12) – Trey Schmidt showed he was almost as good at tossing an egg as he is wheeling an IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car. Schmidt topped the Saturday Southern United Sprint feature at 105 Speedway, getting his first win of the season and staying in contention for a second career SUS title.  Kids from the grandstand were teamed up with the top qualifying drivers from heats in an egg toss competition to determine the front eight starting positions in the feature. Schmidt, who had put a new motor in just the night before, was on the outside pole for the initial start, then moved to the pole after a multi-car melee. Timely cautions kept him out of heavy lapped traffic. Schmidt took the checkers ahead of Shane Morgan and Rod Craddock. “I searched around in one and two to find speed. I tried all different lines. Three and four were locked down and super fast,” he said. “It feels great to get this win. It came at the right time.” Feature results – 1. [Read More]

By Stephanie Deatherage   COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Aug. 29) – Cottage Grove Speedway raced for the sixth occasion on Saturday, with more than 90 entries from Oregon, Washington, and California making the trip. The IMCA Modified feature was a thriller with numerous lead changes and close action all the way to the end.  Paul Rea got to the front first but was quickly passed by Curtis Towns, who then saw Aaron Sheelar drive by.  Sheelar and Towns stayed side-by-side for several laps and traded the lead on three occasions. Towns regained first place on lap eight and remained there for some time. Curtis felt some heat in the last 10 laps as John Campos put an enormous amount of pressure on him.    Campos finally managed to beat Towns to the line on lap 21 only to lose the position to Towns the next time around. As the two came to the checkers, Campos edged out Towns by .035 of a second.  It was Campos’ second straight main event win and his third overall of the 2020 season. Towns [Read More]

Clough captures Lincoln County IMCA Modified feature

By Kelly Ninas NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (Aug. 29) – The racing action was fierce as all the chips were on the table for Championship Night at Lincoln County Raceway.  Finishing their seasons by earning feature victories were Brandon Clough, Ty Rogers, Colton Osborn, Luke Wassom and Lonnie Lenser Jr.  Clough weathered a series of cautions in the late laps to hold on for the IMCA Modified victory. Colton Osborn ran out of real estate and had to settle for runner-up accolades.  Showing no rust from competing in North Platte, former regular Rogers, now of Yuma, Ariz., won his heat race and the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature. Second went to Paul Donovan. Leaving no doubt in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature was Osborn, who saw his first two passes to the front negated by cautions before taking over up front on lap four. Mikey Dancer worked through traffic to finish second. In one of the most exciting races of the evening, It was Wassom who won the final sprint to the finish line to [Read More]
