Sweigart finds lightning on top side in Port Royal PASS win

By Frank Buhrman PORT ROYAL, Pa. (April 3) – ‘Nitro’ Nick Sweigart found lightning in the extreme top groove at Port Royal Speedway Saturday night. Sweigart outdueled Dave Grube II, Garrett Bard and the rest of a 54-car Pennsylvania Sprint Series field to win the 20-lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature at the Juniata County Speed Palace. The early battle between defending national and series champion Bard and Grube set the initial standard. On lap seven, the inside-running Grube made the lead pass, but Josh Bricker tipped over on the front stretch, bringing out the red and negating Grube’s run. Sweigart joined the fray on the ensuring restart and the leaders pulled away in a furious battle, with Grube running low, Bard high, and Sweigart higher. Gonzales wins big at Doe Run’s Small Tire Shootout

DOE RUN, Mo. (April 2-3) – Season openers at Doe Run Raceway have been very good to R.J. Gonzales. The IMCA STARS Mod Lite driver from Colona, Ill., made another 5-1/2 hour tow to the Missouri track pay off, topping both the $750 to win feature on Friday and Saturday’s big $1,500 to win Small Tire Shootout main event. He started from the pole and led all 25 circuits on opening night, then won Saturday’s 30-lapper from the seventh starting spot. “I raced at Doe Run one time last year and won the opening night show,” Gonzales said. “It’s a tight track and you’ve got to be elbows up. Thompson is quickest at Quick Quarter Springfield Raceway

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 3) – 2019 Bad Boy Mower IMCA Modified champion James Thompson came charging from his eighth starting spot, survived three-wide action for the lead along with a late-race caution and a strong run by Trevor Drake in the closing laps in taking the season points opener at the Quick Quarter of the multi-groove Springfield Raceway Saturday night. Thompson, who changed his traditional black color scheme to a bright red, was able to bring a couple of new sponsors into victory lane. During the long green run just past the half way point, Thompson opened up a half straightaway advantage as Drake was searching for a lane that would allow him to close the gap. VINTON, Iowa – More than 20 sponsors have now added STARS Mod Lite awards to their respective programs of contingency support for drivers in the newest division sanctioned by IMCA. Awards based on special events results will be mailed after results of those race are received at the home office and eligibility is verified; those based on national or state point standings will be presented during the IMCA banquet in November or mailed beginning the following week. IMCA Stock Cars chase $5,000 King of the Highbanks check at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa – The fabled highbanks of Marshalltown Speedway are the setting for the $5,000 to win King of the Highbanks special for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars Thursday and Friday, April 8 and 9. Stock Cars will run two sets of heats on Thursday with the top 10 in points locked into Friday’s main event. Entry fee for the weekend is $100. IMCA Modifieds race for $1,000 to win their Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifiers with a $20 entry fee each night. COLBY, Kan. – Thomas County Speedway opens the new season with five IMCA divisions running both nights of the Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10 Havoc on the Hi-Plains. IMCA Modifieds run for $500 to win on Friday and for $1,000, plus a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth, on Saturday. Oberlin building foundation for future with five IMCA divisions on Friday race programs

OBERLIN, Kan. – Five IMCA divisions become part of the Friday night racing foundation at Oberlin Speedway. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts will be featured on May 14, June 25, July 16, Aug. 20 and Sept. 3 programs. Co-promoters Joseph Herskowitz Jr. and Nick Kane have traveled across the area, with stops in Colorado and Nebraska, distributing schedules to boost car counts and spectator attendance in their first year at the northwest Kansas venue. “We know it’s going to take some work to get drivers and that you have to have cars to get the fans,” explained Herskowitz. “We are going to keep things simple this year. Hanson takes PASS thriller at Lincoln Speedway

(March 27) – Jaremi Hanson survived a fierce, multi-lap battle, and serious contact with Mikell McGee, then held off Doug Dodson’s last-lap challenge to win the Pennsylvania Sprint Series 20-lap feature for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars Saturday at Lincoln Speedway. Dodson came home less than a quarter of a second behind Hanson, with Dom Melair, who also had a shot at the leader before being passed by Dodson on the next-to-last lap, finishing third. McGee, who led the first six laps, was fourth, with North Carolina invader Daren Bolac fifth. Hanson had started outside the front row, but pole-starting McGee grabbed the early lead, with a fierce battle behind them for the next several positions. Nagy rules opening event for Mid-Atlantic, PA Sprint series

(March 26) – Veteran Kevin Nagy started on the pole Friday night at Bridgeport Motorsports Park and held off multiple challenges and challengers to lead all 25 laps and score the feature win on Day 1 of the track’s Kingdom of Speed Weekend. The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car event was co-sanctioned by the Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series, which hosted, and the Pennsylvania Sprint Series. Entries numbered 37. Nagy first fought off outside front-row starter Phil Meisner, then dealt with challenges from Rick Stief. Finally, Dave Brown took over second and mounted attacks on the race’s last two restarts, narrowly failing to displace the winner.
