Kay wins second straight Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature, Dubuque has 40 IMCA Modifieds for county fair show

DUBUQUE, Iowa (July 26) – The storyline behind Justin Kay’s career second Hawkeye Dirt Tour victory reads a lot like that of his first. Like he did last week at Knoxville, Kay started Tuesday’s Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event at Dubuque Speedway from the pole. And as was the case both nights, tour point leader Chris Abelson was briefly ahead before Kay charged back in front, this time earning $1,200 and a berth on the ballot for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Forty IMCA Modifieds were on hand for the county fair show, the first tour event held at Dubuque and the seventh of 10 events on the 2016 series schedule. “It was fun,” said Kay. “Racing a Modified is relaxing and I’m getting to do it at tracks I really like. It’s fun to race with different people, guys like Abelson, (Darin) Duffy and (Ryan) DeShaw.” Kay was scored first cross the line on each of the 30 laps. He ran three-wide with Abelson and Duffy down the backstretch on lap [Read More]

Carrell tops IMCA Modifieds at Mark Howard Memorial

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GOVE, Ore. (July 23) – Mark Carrell led the last 22 of 52 laps in winning Saturday’s Mark Howard Memorial Modified Nationals at Cottage Grove Speedway. The $2,600 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory put Carrell on the ballot for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Craig Hanson took the lead on the opening circuit and stayed in front until lap 16 when Collen Winebarger finally found a way around. The mandatory caution flew at lap 25 for refueling and Winebarger continued to set the fast pace after the restart, followed by Carrell and Craig Hanson. Carrell made the pass around Winebarger and set a wicked pace, but a caution with five laps to go bunched everyone up for one final shot at the leader. Carrell kept all challengers in check, however, and held on to win the Howard Memorial for the first time. Winebarger was second, followed by 24th starting Nick Trenchard, Jesse Williamson and Craig Hanson. Feature results – 1. Mark Carrell; 2. Collen Winebarger; 3. Nick Trenchard; 4. Jesse [Read More]

BOONE, Iowa – Pre-registration will have its benefits at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. While saving $20 by entering ahead of time, drivers can reserve pit parking and make themselves eligible for the Sept. 3 Prelude at Boone Speedway. Modified, Stock Car, Northern SportMod and Hobby Stock drivers must have completed pre-registration for the Sept. 5-10 Super Nationals prior to the deadline date in order to compete at the Saturday night Prelude special. Beginning this year, champions in all divisions except Late Models are also required to be pre-registered to be eligible for shares of $13,000 in weekly racing bonus money. “Numbers are already ahead of last year,” said IMCA President Brett Root, noting that entries from 150-plus Modified drivers are already in hand. “The volume of cars for the Prelude is huge and resulted in a Super Nationals-type format last year.” “It’s most efficient for us to have all Prelude drivers be pre-registered for Super Nationals,” he continued. “Once we open the pit gates that day, we’ll be racing within [Read More]

Kay gets first IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour win at Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 21) – Justin Kay has got his Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified figured out. Just ask the rest of the main event field in Thursday’s Hawkeye Dirt Tour at Knoxville Raceway. Kay, best known for his Late Model success, led all but one lap in winning the Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel special. The victory was Kay’s tour career first and third in the sanctioned division this season, and paid $1,500. “It was fun. We unloaded the car and it was great, and that track is so big and fast,” said Kay, who’d had limited success in three previous Late Model starts at Knoxville. “It was really cool to win there, especially since it was my first Hawkeye Dirt Tour win and because of the relationship we have with Dynamic Drivelines. We were one of their very first customers.” Forty-four Modifieds and 52 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods saw action on a muggy night at Knoxville. Curtis VanDerWal topped the $1,000 to win SportMod feature. Kay started from the pole and had the field [Read More]

Deery checkers fly for Eckrich in midweek show at Maquoketa

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (July 20) – After running three-wide for the lead, Denny Eckrich ran away with Wednesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature win at Maquoketa Speedway. Eckrich battled Dan Shelliam and Luke Goedert for the lead before getting the front spot of the IMCA Late Model main event on the sixth of 40 circuits. He’d be challenged up to midway. The last half of the race ran caution-free and Goedert was unable to catch Eckrich before the $2,000 checkers flew. Point leader Jeff Aikey qualified out of the “B” feature, started 16th and finished third. Matt Ryan was fourth while Andy Nezworski, the “B” winner, completed the top five. Eckrich drew the pole but it was outside front row starter Shelliam scored first across the line on each of the first five laps. Shelliam brought out the first caution of the night after hitting an infield tire on lap 15. Three more yellows came out before midway but after that the green light stayed on and Eckrich motored away from the rest of the field. He [Read More]
