Dotson collects Sunday checkers at Cottage Grove

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 25) – Another first-time tour winner made his way to victory lane following Sunday’s Wild West Modified Shootout main event at Cottage Grove Speedway. Ethan Dotson took the $1,000 checkers at an event contested by 45 drivers from Oregon, California, Nevada, Montana and Colorado, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia. Collen Winebarger paced the field early. Several cautions kept the race close and Winebarger was challenged past midway. The leader had a close call late in the race.  While navigating lapped traffic, he made contact with a slower car and nearly lost the lead before the yellow flag came out for separate incident. Not too long after the restart, he was passed on the inside by Dotson. The California charger made the maneuver on lap 31 and took off after that. He built a sizable advantage and won his first career Wild West Modified Shootout feature in only three starts. Dotson became the 17th different driver to have won with the series and the fifth Californian to [Read More]

Lauer conquers Southern Oregon Wild West Shootout feature

By Ben Deatherage WHITE CITY, Ore. (June 24) – Danny Lauer scorched the Wild West Modified Shootout field on a scorching Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Lauer’s $1,000 IMCA Modified win came on a day when the mercury hit 100 and then some. The new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier won his career-first Shootout feature after a disappointing 17th place outing in the opener the night before at Yreka. Ethan Dotson took control right off the bat at White City but was overtaken on the fifth circuit by fellow Californian Lauer. Lauer built comfortable leads that were erased by cautions.  Despite the restarts, Lauer held on the rest of the distance to become the 16th different main event winner in the history of the Wild West Modified Shootout. John Campos found some redemption for his post-race disqualification from the opening night feature and finished second, followed by Collen Winebarger, Mark Wauge and Friday winner Nick Trenchard. Trenchard made his way into the Saturday show by winning the “B” feature Feature results – 1. Danny Lauer; 2. [Read More]

Trenchard wins Wild One at Yreka

By Ben Deatherage YREKA, Calif. (June 23) – Siskiyou Motor Speedway hosted opening night of the Wild West Modified Shootout for the first time and Nick Trenchard was on top of his game from start to finish of the Friday night feature. Trenchard was the $1,000 IMCA Modified feature winner in a lidlifter contested by 33 entries from California, Oregon, Nevada and Colorado. He grabbed the initial lead after the first two attempts to start the race resulted in cautions. The Klamath Falls, Ore., chauffeur stayed sharp and stayed in front of his challengers following every restart. Kellen Chadwick mounted a late race-charge toward the front. Chadwick got close to the leader in traffic only for another yellow to come out.  On the ensuing restart Chadwick went off the top of the backstretch and flipped. He was not injured but the incident would take too much time to clean up against a strict curfew and resulted in the race being called. Trenchard got the win in the Rich and Nikki Beihn-owned ride. It marked the second occasion, and [Read More]

Another milestone as Anderson wins 300th

DES MOINES, Iowa (June 14) – Another win, another milestone. And Shannon Anderson will tell you this one was the most difficult to achieve. Anderson won for the 300th time in his IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock career Wednesday at Southern Iowa Speedway. That’s the most for any driver in division history and the fourth-highest single division total in IMCA’s modern era. “To win Super Nationals or national championships or 100, 200 or 300 features are all really hard. They’re all big accomplishments,” said Anderson. “Three hundred feature wins has been the hardest. I would never have guess I’d get that many. I can still remember when I just wanted to win once.” While perfect this season at the Mahaska County Monster, Anderson was happy to put the milestone win in the rearview mirror. “I was relieved to get it,” he said. “Mike Kincaid was really fast. He’s always really good there and it wasn’t easy for me to get underneath and get the lead.” The six-time national and three-time IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by [Read More]

Skalicky leads every lap of every Northern SportMod Nationals race

By Chad Meyer BRITT, Iowa (June 20) – Jesse Skalicky and his crew had been looking for a special or two that didn’t interfere with their regular Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod weekly racing. After leading every lap of every race he was in at Hancock County Speedway’s Northern SportMod Nationals, Skalicky was looking for a place to put his $2,700 in winnings and a very tall trophy for the six-hour tow home to Fargo, N.D. Skalicky had never raced at Britt before Tuesday night but don’t be surprised to see him return soon. He led every lap of his heat race, drew the pole and repeated that flag-to-flag run in the $200 to win dash, then led every circuit in the $2,500 to win main event. “I have never had a night like this. It’s the biggest win I’ve ever been part of,” said Skalicky, whose previous top payday was $400 and dated to his pure stock days. “We had been looking around for specials and one of my crew guys saw this on Facebook.” [Read More]

Pray prevails at Greased Pig for first IMCA Modified victory

AUBURN, Mich. (June 16) – IMCA Modified career win 1.0 at Tri-City Motor Speedway’s Greased Pig 7.0 special put Chaz Pray on the ballot for Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational 14.0. “I’ve always had it in my mind that when we won, it would be from further back,” Pray said after taking the $1,077 checkers Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway, his home track. “Tri-City is usually very racy and you don’t know where the line is going to be. It was rewarding to run where we wanted to and be able to keep out momentum up.” “It’s a big bonus to be on the Fast Shafts ballot,” the first-time IMCA Modified feature winner added. The six-year IMCA campaigner had started the 41-lapper from outside the front row. While numerous cautions interrupted the event, Pray stayed in charge and ended a couple car lengths faster than big brother Matt Szecsodi. Szecsodi, who also cut his racing teeth in an asphalt modified before switching to dirt, was right behind Pray before a late-race hiccup. Timmy Near started 11th and [Read More]
