Noll notches IMCA Modified win at Canyon

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (April 28) – Jason Noll picked off his third win in four events in the IMCA Modified division Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park. Noll raced his way from sixth to an early lead, overtaking Jay Foster who started on the front row. Once Noll found himself out front, his MRT Chassis was set on cruise control to his third win in four points races at Canyon. Chaz Baca Jr. and John Parmeley put on a good show, both coming from the fifth row to land on the podium, with Baca eventually working his way around Parmeley to finish in second. Chase Alves accepted a $100 challenge to start in the rear of the Arizona Differential IMC Northern SportMod field, only able to take the money home with a trip to victory lane. Alves methodically worked his way through the field, picking off cars one by one on his trek to the front. Speedy Madrid fought Alves to the checkered, but eventually it was Alves victorious, earning his $100 bonus and another [Read More]

Parmeley prevails at Canyon

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (April 1) – John Parmeley pulled off the sweep in the Leading Edge IMCA Modifieds Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park, winning his heat race before driving from his sixth starting spot to take the feature win. Parmeley declared himself as the car to beat early on, making his way around leader K.C. Dieckman and driving away from the field. Parmeley held the large advantage through numerous cautions until Jason Noll found himself behind the leader on a restart. Parmeley and Noll escaped the fray with only a handful of laps to go to battle it out for the win. Noll made the first mistake coming to the white flag, allowing Parmeley to get away with the win. Noll held on for second with Zachary Madrid, Chaz Baca Jr. and Bubba Stafford rounding out the top five. Speedy Madrid wound up with the Arizona Differential IMCA Northern SportMod victory after the apparent winner failed post-race tech.

Repeat winners are Saturday story at Canyon

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (March 17) – Repeat winners were the story Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park. Jason Noll wasted no time following a Leading Edge IMCA Modified restart and made what proved to be the race-winning pass of Ryan Roath to the inside when the green flag flew. Chaz Baca had a strong run going until a misstep allowed Joey Moriarity to get by to the inside, putting both MRT Racecar teammates on the podium. For the first time in almost a full year the race fans at Canyon were treated to a full Allscapes IMCA Stock Car battle between Cody Center and George Fronsman. It seems between the two it’s been one of them having some type of mechanical problem over the last six or so races. At last, both cars held up to full strength and the fight raged on. Much of the race was led by Fronsman on the low side while Center continued to chip away on the cushion. Center finally got the run he needed to get by Fronsman [Read More]

Wolla outruns Marriott for Dirt Dominator win at Canyon

By Mike Spieker PEORIA, Ariz. (Feb. 13) – The Karl Performance Arizona IMCA Modified Tour made its way to Canyon Speedway Park Tuesday for a practice night in preparation for rounds five and six. Following the night’s test and tune session was the second round of the Dirt Dominator bracket race. The final round came down to a heavyweight matchup between defending IMCA Modified national champion, Jason Wolla, and defending tour point champion Hunter Marriott. Marriott won the coin toss for lane choice and elected the inside line, which was where the majority of the rounds were won throughout the event. That didn’t matter to Wolla, however. Marriott and Wolla got the green flag down the backstretch and were door-to-door into turns three and four. Wolla put his no. 27 machine up on the cushion and used his momentum to carry him to the lead on the front straightaway. Marriott was forced to play catch up the remaining two circuits but stayed within striking distance. Wolla left the bottom lane open for Marriott in the [Read More]

Marriott motors to IMCA Modified checkers in Challenge Series finale

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (Jan. 28) – Hunter Marriott picked up the $1,000 win in Sunday’s IMCA Modified main event evening the score with Ricky Thornton Jr. in the four race Winter Challenge Series at Canyon Speedway Park. It was apparent from the start the bottom side of the track would be the fastest way around the oval and once Marriott worked his way into the lead early he stayed there to the checkers. The last half of the race was a major battle through lapped traffic. Cody Laney and Thornton reeled the leader in but Marriott, already a Fast Shafts Allstar Invitational ballot candidate, narrowly held on for the victory while Laney and Thornton ran 2-3. Jeremy Payne brought his borrowed car home in fourth while defending national champion Jason Wolla was finally able to put together a solid day, earning a heat race win and finishing fifth in the feature. Speedy Madrid picked up his second win of the series in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods while Cody Center picked up his first [Read More]

Thornton scores second IMCA Modified Winter Challenge Series win

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (Jan. 27) – Ricky Thornton Jr. rolled through the middle of the track and around Hunter Marriott on his way to capturing his second IMCA Modified win of the Winter Challenge Series at Canyon Speedway Park. After a three-wide start to the race that lasted more than a full lap, Marriott battled his way into the lead position early in the Saturday feature ahead of Thornton and Chaz Baca. As the race approached halfway, Thornton began to show his nose to the inside of Marriott, finally pulling up alongside. With Thornton pressuring to the inside, Marriott changed his line just enough for Thornton to go to the middle of the track and drive around the leader on the outside. Thornton, already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, secured the $1,000 win while Marriott began to fade, making way for Tim Ward to grab the runner-up spot in his first race back in his home state of Arizona. Marriott held onto third ahead of Cody Laney and Jeremy Payne. George Fronsman [Read More]
