Kay wins second straight Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature, Dubuque has 40 IMCA Modifieds for county fair show

DUBUQUE, Iowa (July 26) – The storyline behind Justin Kay’s career second Hawkeye Dirt Tour victory reads a lot like that of his first. Like he did last week at Knoxville, Kay started Tuesday’s Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event at Dubuque Speedway from the pole. And as was the case both nights, tour point leader Chris Abelson was briefly ahead before Kay charged back in front, this time earning $1,200 and a berth on the ballot for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Forty IMCA Modifieds were on hand for the county fair show, the first tour event held at Dubuque and the seventh of 10 events on the 2016 series schedule. “It was fun,” said Kay. “Racing a Modified is relaxing and I’m getting to do it at tracks I really like. Two complete shows on tap for Lee County Summerfest

DONNELLSON, Iowa – Summerfest features at Lee County Speedway pay $1,000 to winners of Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main events. The Monday, Aug. 1 Modified feature at Donnellson is a qualifying event for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Stock Cars and Northern SportMods are on both Monday, Aug. 1 and Tuesday, Aug. 2 programs, as are Mach-1 Sport Compacts, running for $300 to win. Complete shows will be run each night at IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, regional, Allstar Performance State points will be given. Start money for the Modifieds is $100. Carrell tops IMCA Modifieds at Mark Howard Memorial

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GOVE, Ore. (July 23) – Mark Carrell led the last 22 of 52 laps in winning Saturday’s Mark Howard Memorial Modified Nationals at Cottage Grove Speedway. The $2,600 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory put Carrell on the ballot for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Craig Hanson took the lead on the opening circuit and stayed in front until lap 16 when Collen Winebarger finally found a way around. The mandatory caution flew at lap 25 for refueling and Winebarger continued to set the fast pace after the restart, followed by Carrell and Craig Hanson. Carrell made the pass around Winebarger and set a wicked pace, but a caution with five laps to go bunched everyone up for one final shot at the leader. Carrell kept all challengers in check, however, and held on to win the Howard Memorial for the first time. Funeral services pending for Dave Farren Sr.

DES MOINES, Iowa – An IMCA Modified racing legend passed away Sunday in his hometown of Des Moines. Services for Dave Farren Sr., 70 are at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 29 at Hamilton’s. In honor of Dave’s favorite color, friends are asked to wear purple. Farren began racing an IMCA Modified in 1984; his first full season was 1985. IMCA’s national champion in 1986 and 1988, he became the all-time wins leader in the division by passing Jack Mitchell and Bobby Layne, and also won for the 100th time in his career in 1988. Ramsey Meyer made the pass on Andrew Harris with five laps remaining in the KISS 107.1 FM Sport Compact feature and held on for his third win in a row. Harris finished in the runner-up spot followed by Tom Meyer and Tracy Raml. Rusty Montagne took his second win in a row in the MOPAR Northern SportMod division. Behind Montagne, Karl Brewer finished second followed by Justin Voltz and Austin Price. Chris Mills took his second Casey’s General Stores Stock Car win in a row, his third in his last four starts. Gilman takes IMCA Modified checkers at Stuart

STUART, Iowa (July 24) – After three weeks with no racing, the dirt was flying Sunday night at Stuart Speedway. Marcus Fagan, John Gill, Josh Gilman, Jamie Schirm and Clint Luellen were IMCA winners on NAPA Auto Parts Night at the Races. Todd Cooney and Gilman brought the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds to the line with Gilman leading early over Jake Murray and Cooney. The top three held true until Jeff James moved past Cooney for third on lap 13. Murray closed the gap some, but there was no stopping Gilman from taking his first local win of 2016. Murray finished a strong second with James third, Cooney fourth and Tim Ward fifth. Joel Tigges and Derrick Rohe brought out the IMCA Stock Cars with Tigges leading lap one. Stedjee nets first Shawano win

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (July 23) – Vern Stedjee earned a hard-fought IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature victory, his first one ever at Shawano Speedway Saturday night. Polesitter Kurt Olson grabbed the lead on the opening lap as Stedjee moved to second. As Olson continued to lead, Mike Schmidt passed Luke Uttecht to take third on lap five. Stedjee remained in pursuit of Olson while Dan Michonski battled with Schmidt for third. On lap nine, Stedjee got underneath Olson and took the lead away exiting turn four. A caution on the next lap slowed the pace and bunched the field up. As the race went back to green, Schmidt passed Olson for second and raced right on the rear bumper of Stedjee. Holladay Scores Big Muscatine County Fair Race Win

The iWireless IMCA Late Model 30-lap main saw Chad Holladay score his second consecutive feature win on a ½-mile dirt oval that was in pristine racing condition. Lange leads the way at Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. (July 23) – Brad Lange rained on the parade of his B & B Racing Chassis IMCA Stock Car foes Saturday at Arlington Raceway. Lange took the lead from his front row spot and never looked back, leading the flag-to-flag race in its entirety for his first feature win of the year. Chad Schroeder followed close behind to take second in the event rained out the previous week. Matt Schauer was third. The make-up 95.7 the Rock IMCA Sprint feature saw several yellow flags before Brandon Allen took the checkers. Iowan Michael Johnston led the first two laps ahead of Allen. Coming around for the third lap, Johnston lost power and ended up with a caution flag and into the pit area. Wedelstadt is king of the ring at Oshkosh

(July 22) – Mike Wedelstadt took command at the start and led all 20 laps of Friday’s King of the Ring feature for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds at Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway. Wedelstadt started on the front row and quickly took charge of the race. Following a quick lap two caution, Wedelstadt was chased by Paul Parker, Benji LaCrosse, Marcus Yarie, Brian Drexler and Steve Schneider. A debris caution bunched the field again on lap 10, and the field ran the next five laps before the final amber. During that span, Wedelstadt was on cruise in front leaving a tight battle for the next five spots. Parker, LaCrosse, Yarie, Drexler, Jeremy Christians and Dan Roedl ran in a bunch setting up a five lap sprint following the final restart.
