Arneson adds Don Gumke Racers’ Memorial win at Jamestown to IMCA Modified resume

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (June 13) – An IMCA Modified driver with a knack for winning big races won another of them Saturday night at Jamestown Speedway. Austin Arneson led all 30 laps in topping the Don Gumke Racers’ Memorial while Jason Grimes finished second in Gumke’s no. 2 car, which had come out of the Arneson shop. “It’s pretty cool any time you can win a memorial race, especially when you knew the guy,” said Arneson. “I’m proud to say I’ve accomplished this. It means a lot to me to have won this race.” Arneson had drawn the pole and Grimes the outside front row start for the inaugural special. The race stayed green past the halfway mark before two back-to-back cautions. Benton County duel goes to Cordes

By Jerry Mackey VINTON, Iowa (June 14) – Sunday’s IMCA Modified 20-lap feature saw long-time Benton County Speedway racer Troy Cordes outduel Dylan Thornton from California for the win. The two traded the lead several times before Cordes was able to take control late in the race. Thornton ran a close second ahead of last week’s winner Tom Berry Jr. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature belonged to Shawn Ritter. He ran the extreme low line the entire race and held back Damon Murty in getting to the checkers first. Outside front row starter Tony Olson put on a dominating performance in winning the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod main. Olson ran the extreme high side the entire race in leading flag to flag. Dylan VanWyk made the bottom work well but not good enough to get by Olson in settling for second. Plenty of excitement was witnessed by the fans in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature. From 18th, Knutson captures Hobby checkers at Boone

By Joyce Eisele BOONE, Iowa (June 13) – Eric Knutson earned hard charger and feature win honors after starting 18th in the Saturday IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature at Boone Speedway. Knutson got past Bryant Johnson in the closing laps to capture the win. Following second place Johnson was Daniel Smith in third, Curt Reed took fourth, and Jeremiah Andrews was fifth. Ricky Thornton Jr. followed his king of the hill triumph with the IMCA Modified checkers after starting 12th while Doug Smith repeated his winning ways in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod main. Troy Jerovetz took command at lap four of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car 20-lap feature and dominated to the checkers. Race cars were not the first to hit the track at Boone Speedway on Saturday. It was the Boone High School Class of 2020 that got to parade down the frontstretch and take the checkered flag first.

Logan Duffy scores first Indee IMCA Late Model win

By Jerry Mackey INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (June 13) – Saturday was a night for the record books at the Independence Motor Speedway, with two bounties claimed and another set, plus hometowner Logan Duffy scored his first local win in the very tough IMCA Sunoco Late Model division. A total of 124 drivers signed in do battle. Duffy started racing at his local track by jumping right into the Late Model division at the age of 14 with veterans like Jeff Aikey, Curt Martin, Greg Kastli, Sean Johnson and many more. Under the watchful eye of his grandfather and IMS Hall of Famer Gary Crawford, Duffy scored the 25-lap feature win on Saturday night. Ben Seemann led early before Johnson took the point. Johnson led until a restart late in the race and that is when Duffy used the low line of the multi-grooved track to shoot into the lead. Osborn is outstanding in Lincoln County opener

(June 13) – Leading the lap that mattered the most was Colton Osborn in the IMCA Modified feature in front of a packed house on opening night Saturday at Lincoln County Raceway. Osborn started in the back row, worked his way through traffic and made the pass for the lead as the white flag was waved. Andrew Dillenburg was the leader until relinquishing the point to Osborn in the waning laps. Dillenburg continued to stay the course and earn a runner-up finish for his efforts. Ferriera is first in RaceSaver feature at U.S. 36

(June 12) – A full night of competition greeted both competitors and fans Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway and a multi-groove race track provided for intense racing all night long. The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars again saw two distinct grooves from the drivers up front. Kenny Potter led early using the low line, while Jay Russell tried the high line. Further back, Monty Ferriera ran the low line, with Tyler Drueke on the top. Once the race found a rhythm, so did Ferriera as he worked his way to the lead. Ferriera went on to win the race, with Russell second, Drueke third and Potter in fourth. Alex Salzman finished in the fifth spot. Chad Clancy dominated the IMCA Modified feature in route to his first trip to Westfall GMC victory lane this season. Outagamie openers go to Whitman, Richards, Engebregtsen, Schulte

By Edward Anschutz SEYMOUR, Wis. (June 12) – One hundred and fifty-two cars packed the pit area for the first night of the 2020 racing season Friday at Outagamie Speedway powered by EWSC. Defending IMCA Modified track champion Johnny Whitman drew the pole for the night’s main event and looked strong early on as Benji LaCrosse gave chase. LaCrosse closed in several times but was never able to mount a serious challenge for the lead. Whitman led flag to flag earning the victory over LaCrosse. Lucas Lamberies was third, Jason Ebert took fourth and Andy Kleczka completed the top five. Kenny Richards jumped from the pole position to the lead in the opening lap of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature as Jeremy Christians, Luke Lemmens and Eric Mahlik battled for second. Burgtorf tops first Drive For 5 at Donnellson

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 12) – Round one of Pepsi Lee County Speedway’s Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5 went to a driver well acquainted with the fast way around the oval at Donnellson. Mark Burgtorf pocketed the $1,000 Friday night victory in the Lynn Richards no. 15R ride. Burgtorf and Matt Strassheim drew the front row for the 22-lap feature. While Burgtorf set a fast pace out front, Strassheim, Tommy Elston, Darin Duffy, Denny Woodworth and Dustin Griffin battled for position behind him. The first caution appeared on lap 11 following a multi-car tangle. Burgtorf moved back out front on the restart, with Elston, Duffy and Woodworth close behind. The final caution of the race came on lap 16. Again, Burgtorf rocketed back out front on the restart with Duffy overtaking Elston for the runner-up spot. Dacotah checkers fly for Kinzley, Hanson

By Becca Rattei MANDAN, N.D. (June 12) – IMCA winners Friday night at Dacotah Speedway were Quentin Kinzley and Braydee Hanson. Pole sitter Hank Berry quickly pulled away early in the IMCA Modified feature. Berry’s large lead was erased by a lap seven caution, however, and Kinzley passed Mark Dahl for second and challenged Berry for the lead following the restart. They briefly raced side by side until Kinzley took charge on lap eight. Kinzley started to pull away as Marlyn Seidler started to close in on Berry. Kinzley made it look easy as he cruised to victory lane to win his second career feature victory. Berry held off Seidler to finish second while Jeremy Keller finished fourth. Spencer Wilson rounded out the top five. Ken Sandberg grabbed the lead from pole sitter Stan Thompson in the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature. As Sandberg started to distance himself from the field, Thompson and Hanson battled for second. A caution regrouped the field with four laps to go. Strothman wins IMCA Stock Car classic at CJ

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa – Corey Strothman prevailed in a classic when The Class Too Tough To Tame took to the track Friday at CJ Speedway. The 20-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature took the green with Brandon Jay leading before fourth starting Strothman took over the point position. Strothman and Jason See went on to race side-by-side for the majority of the race, and with slide jobs and diamond corner moves taking place neither driver was able to take control of the race. Strothman finally took the win half a car length ahead of See with a fast-closing Adam Bell crossing under the checkers in third. “We touched once on the back chute but Jason and I race together a lot and I feel comfortable racing like that with him,” Strothman said from victory lane. The Mach-1 Sport Compacts saw pole sitter Codey Staley lead the caution-free 12-lap feature flag to flag. Staley cruised to the impressive win ahead of Brad Havel and William Michel.
