Cooney adds to history at Stuart Speedway with 200th win of IMCA Late Model career

STUART, Iowa (Aug. 3) – Thirty-odd years ago, Todd Cooney was one on the kids hanging on the fence and reveling in the races at Stuart Speedway. On Sunday, Cooney got to celebrate another of his own on-track accomplishments at the same storied venue. The Des Moines driver won his career division-best 200th IMCA Late Model feature in the rescheduled event, then got number 201 in the scheduled race. “Stuart was the best place in the world for me to get my 200th win and it’s where I wanted to do it. Wren is latest Modified winner at Hancock County

By Greg Grabianowski BRITT, Iowa (Aug. 1) – Minnesotan Jerry Wren became the 13th different IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified driver to win a feature at Hancock County Speedway this season. Wren started outside of the second row before moving to the front of the pack to take the double checkered flags. Levi Nielsen was the runner-up with Kevin Stoa third. Kyle Schmauss was the 10th different IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock driver to find victory lane at Britt in 2014. Cody Frerichs and Jeremy Olson started on the front row of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature field but when the dust settled Calvin Lange captured his second local win of the season from the eighth staring spot. Ryan Hiscocks earned his second local Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod victory of the year. Megan Lappegard won the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature at Hancock County for the fourth time this season.

Cordes, Zwanziger win thrillers at Independence

By Ryan Clark INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (Aug. 2) – Troy Cordes and Alex Zwanziger both stood in victory lane Saturday night at Independence Motor Speedway – and they got there in different, yet equally thrilling ways. Cordes, who earned his third win of the year in the Performance Bodies IMCA Modified feature, chased down leader Adam Johnson for a late pass on his way to victory. Zwanziger took advantage of a late restart and topped a three-car battle to earn his first win of the season in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Brennen Chipp held the early lead in the 20-lapper for the Modifieds while Johnson challenged to his outside. Johnson took the lead following the race’s only caution on lap three and quickly extended his advantage. Long stays perfect on the weekend

The only things left are to start knocking off feature wins and a possible championship run. Long earned his second feature win of the weekend with Saturday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory at Francis Creek. Randy Markwardt opened as the leader. Jay Matthias jumped all over the leader and up front on lap two and set the pace over the next four laps until point leader Johnny Whitman encountered problems and brought out the only caution of the race. Long jumped up to the front of the field along with Shawn Kilgore who had started deep in the field. Long emerged as the man to beat as he grabbed the lead on Matthias on lap 12 down-low. QA1 founder & chairman James Jordan passes away

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – James “Jim” Jordan, founder and chairman of QA1, passed away Wednesday, July 30 after a long battle with cancer. He was 67. “Jim was a great mentor and very well respected,” said QA1 Product Manager Jeff Diaz, who worked with Jordan for 26 years. “I was lucky to be able to learn from him. Format changes are few for Sept. 1-6 Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa (Aug. 1) – Changes in the race night format during the upcoming IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s are few and far between. Super Nationals runs from Sept. 1-6 at Boone Speedway. Subject to car counts at the 32nd annual event, the number of heat races, “B” features and qualifying features are the same this year as in 2013 for the Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Car count numbers will determine the number of Northern SportMod “B” features. Kay seeks third straight checkers at Independence Deery

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 30) – Point leader Justin Kay has already won three times this season to match his 2013 Deery Brothers Summer Series total. He’ll try to equal his personal best of three straight feature wins when the IMCA Late Model tour travels to Independence Motor Speedway next Wednesday, Aug. 6. Kay won for the first time in his brief Deery career at Independence last year, then followed with wins at Davenport and West Liberty. He won at East Moline this May, then again on July 8 at West Liberty and July 13 at Dubuque. The upcoming feature at Independence pays $3,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (July 28) – Kelly Shryock, Jason Hahne and Jenae Gustin all became $1,000 feature winners after Thursday Night Thunder became Monday Night Mayhem. Shryock topped the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, Hahne paced the IMCA Late Models and Gustin rang up the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod win during the rescheduled fair special at Hamilton County Speedway.
