Ryan gets best of Deery challengers at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Aug. 16) – If he’d had a rear view mirror, Matt Ryan would have been able to watch the race that played out behind him in Tuesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Dubuque Speedway. Ryan led all but the first of 50 laps in winning the IMCA Late Model tour feature and $2,400. The Deery checkers were his career second. “Normally when I go to Dubuque I’m a guardrail guy but the car was good on the top side in my heat race,” said Ryan, who’d won the Slocum Memorial Deery in April of 2011. “I thought if I’m starting second that I’d stay there. Bruening brings point lead to Dubuque Deery

DUBUQUE, Iowa – There’s a new leader heading into Tuesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series event at Dubuque Speedway. Tyler Bruening brings the IMCA Late Model Tour point lead to town for the Aug. 16 show. The feature pays $2,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow. Spectator admission is $18 for adults, $12 for students ages 13-17 and free for 12 and under. Pit passes are $30 Bruening had finished seven places ahead of Jeff Aikey at the previous Deery event at Cedar County Raceway. Kay continues Deery Series dominance at Cedar County

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 2) – A quick call to the assessor’s office would reveal that Justin Kay does not own Cedar County Raceway. It just seems like he does. Kay won his third straight Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at the Tipton oval Tuesday night, leading the last 31 circuits in a fast-paced 50-lapper that ran caution-free. The $2,000 victory was his IMCA Late Model tour career 18th and second this season. “We’ve always run really well at Tipton. It’s probably one of the tracks I have the most laps on, too,” said Kay, who started racing there in his 4-cylinder days. “Everything about that track I love. TIPTON, Iowa – IMCA’s Deery Brothers Summer Series and Hawkeye Dirt Tour travel to Cedar County Raceway for what’s become a traditional dirt track twinbill Tuesday night. The Aug. 2 doubleheader takes both IMCA Late Models and Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds to Tipton for a fifth consecutive year. Late Models race for $2,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. Modifieds chase a $1,000 top check and a minimum of $150 to start their 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. Aikey holds off Bruening, scores Deery Series win in Des Moines

By Ryan Clark DES MOINES, Iowa (July 29) – To say Jeff Aikey had to work for his Friday win at the Iowa State Fair Speedway would be an understatement. The current point leader in the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models rolled off from the pole but was pressured throughout most of the 40-lapper by Tyler Bruening. Aikey, also the 2016 track champion in Des Moines, led the field through a pair of early cautions on laps three and nine, the only two stoppages of the event. Bruening, who started outside of row three, took advantage of the lap nine restart and stole second from Matt Ryan before running down the race leader. The lead pair built a near straightaway lead over the field while they battled for the top spot. DES MOINES, Iowa (July 26) – The Deery Brothers Summer Series is Des Moines bound for a July 29 event at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Friday’s feature for touring IMCA Late Models pays $2,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow. Spectator admission is $20 for adults or $15 with discount coupon available from any Casey’s General Store. Seniors and military are $18 or $13 with coupon, while youth are $10 and five and under get in free. Pit passes are $30. Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls leads the Deery points race coming into the 10th of 16 events in the 30th annual series. Deery Series at Maquoketa next Wednesday, Dubuque reschedules IMCA Late Model show

MAQUOKETA, Iowa – The second half of the Deery Brothers Summer Series now starts next Wednesday, when the IMCA Late Model tour travels to Maquoketa Speedway for a $2,000 to win show on July 20. Pit gates and the grandstand both open at 4 p.m. for the ninth of 16 events on the 2016 schedule. Beginning at Maquoketa, Sunoco Race Fuels pays a $200 bonus to the feature winner if they’ve maintained perfect attendance throughout the series; that bonus will roll over to the next event if the winner has not been at every previous event. Kossuth County Deery checkers fly for Callahan

ALGONA, Iowa (July 7) – Joel Callahan and Jeff Aikey were the big winners Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway. While Callahan paced the Deery Brothers Summer Series main event and earned $2,000, Aikey edged Tyler Bruening by all of one point to top standings for the first half of the IMCA Late Model tour season for a $2,500 prize. The 30-lap main event ran caution-free. Callahan started on the pole and was not seriously challenged as lapped traffic never became an issue and the closest Bruening could get in the waning circuits was four car lengths back. Cayden Carter, Charlie McKenna and Ryan Dolan completed the top five. Carter was also the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing winner. Independence checkers make Fitzpatrick first repeat Deery winner

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 6) – Scott Fitzpatrick took home a prize better than any blue ribbon Wednesday night. Fitzpatrick became the first repeat winner in the 30th annual Deery Brothers Summer Series, topping the 40-lap main event for IMCA Late Models at Independence Motor Speedway. The Buchanan County Fair special checkers were worth $2,000. Fitzpatrick passed pole starter Jon Passick on the sixth circuit and led to the end of the 40-lapper. Denny Eckrich pulled close twice before Fitzpatrick got a lapped car ahead just after midway. The race had boiled down to a two-car battle, with Matt Ryan alone in third and points leader Jeff Aikey by himself in fourth, before the final caution came out with 12 laps left. Midweek events at Independence, Kossuth County next for Deery Series

VINTON, Iowa (June 29) – A pair of midweek events are next on the schedule for the 30th annual Deery Brothers Summer Series. Touring IMCA Late Models race for $2,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start on Wednesday, July 6 at Independence Motor Speedway and Thursday, July 7 at Kossuth County Speedway in Algona. The series is still looking for its first repeat winner as Denny Eckrich, Curt Martin, Scott Fitzpatrick, Joel Callahan, Ray Guss Jr. and Justin Kay all have made their way to victory lane through the first six events.
