Eckrich outruns Deery pack for Marshalltown checkers

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (June 5) – After he kept the pack behind him, Andy Eckrich picked up the top check from Marshalltown Speedway’s Steve Priske Miller Lite 50 Deery Brothers Summer Series show. Eckrich led the last 48 of 50 laps in earning the $2,000 victory Tuesday night and pocketed another $400 in bonus money from Rumours Bar and Grill for winning his heat and the main event. “We got going pretty early but I figured the pack of wolves would be coming,” said Eckrich, who set sail after the final caution came out on the 14th circuit. “I got into traffic around lap 30 and with six to go caught up with four lapped cars that were racing hard. It took a while to get by them.” Point leader Justin Kay started 12th and chased Eckrich across the stripe, but didn’t get close enough to challenge. Todd Cooney, Jeff Aikey and Eckrich’s brother Denny completed the top five. The checkers were his Deery career eighth and first since opening night of the 2014 tour. Eckrich [Read More]

Streak-stopper Martin wins Boone Deery

BOONE, Iowa (May 28) – A driver who knows a thing or two about winning streaks ended one and started one of his own Monday night at Boone Speedway. Curt Martin led all but one of 40 laps in winning the Memorial Day Deery Brothers Summer Series event at Boone, earning $2,000 for his career 27th IMCA Late Model tour victory. His convincing run at the front ended Justin Kay’s bid for a record fifth consecutive series victory. Jeremiah Hurst finished a distant second, with Ryan Dolan, Kay and Joe Zrostlik rounding out the top five. Martin drew the pole and gave up the lead early to Hurst for a single circuit before resuming command. Just a couple cautions slowed what was otherwise a fast-paced feature but Martin edged ahead on lap 10 and 22 restarts. Hurst was the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing winner. Martin and Kay are now tied for third on the all-time series wins list; Martin had been the first Deery driver to win three straight features, doing so [Read More]

Kay keen on collecting record fifth straight Deery win on Memorial Day at Boone

BOONE, Iowa – Justin Kay runs for a Deery Brothers Summer Series record fifth straight feature win when the IMCA Late Model tour makes its traditional Memorial Day visit to Boone Speedway. He shares the current record of four consecutive wins with Gary Webb (1994), Rob Toland (2004) and Brian Harris (2013). “We’re not going to make any changes to the car. Everything has been working real good for us,” Kay said. “We’ll just try to make sure that nothing falls apart and everything works.” His 27 career tour checkers include the Memorial Day event at Boone in 2015. Quad City win is Deery Series record tying fourth straight for Kay

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (May 6) – A driver who’s been in a class by himself joined another exclusive group Sunday night. Justin Kay won the Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Quad City Speedway, his third victory in as many IMCA Late Model tour outings this season and record-tying fourth straight Deery win dating to the 2017 finale. Previous winners of four straight Deery features were Gary Webb in 1994, Rob Toland in 2004 and Brian Harris in 2013. Kay had ended the streak by Harris with his Deery Series-first career victory. “It’s awesome to be able to accomplish something like this,” said Kay, who’d started 24th at East Moline after cutting a tire in his heat race and then restarted at the back after changing a flat midway through the main event. “Gary Webb and Rob Toland have done this for so long. I really want to get that fifth win in a row. I know the guys in the shop are going to go over the car and do everything they can for [Read More]

Kay dominates Deery at Maquoketa

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (May 5) – Once he got in front, there was no catching Justin Kay in Saturday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Maquoketa Speedway. Kay started in the second row, slipped inside leader Terry Neal on the 12th circuit and led to the finish of the IMCA Late Model Tour feature. “Terry moved up to get by a lapped car and that’s when I was able to pass him,” Kay said. “Any time you get an opportunity like that, you have to be ready.” The sole caution of the 50-lapper came out with three circuits to go and Kay by then handily ahead of Neal & Co. Unfazed, Kay pulled away again in taking the $2,000 checkers, his second in as many Deery dates this season, third in a row and career 26th. Neal, Jeremiah Hurst, Cayden Carter and Ryan Dolan completed the top five. Dolan was the winner of the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing. Feature results – 1. Justin Kay, Wheatland; 2.
