Determined Kay runs away with Independence Deery

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 8) – Justin Kay came to Independence Motor Speedway with a chip on his shoulder Wednesday night. He left town with his fourth Deery Brothers Summer Series feature win of the season, a check for $3,000 and sole possession of first place in point standings for the IMCA Late Model tour. “I was a little disappointed after last night,” understated Kay, clearly on a mission after running an oh-so-close second to Brian Harris in the Tuesday Deery feature at West Liberty. “I pushed as hard as I could. When you have Jeff Aikey and Ryan Dolan behind you, you have to do that.” Aikey was the runner-up, two lapped cars and half a straightaway off Kay’s torrid pace. Harris overcomes ailing engine, edges Kay for West Liberty Deery win

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (July 7) – Brian Harris overcame an ailing engine and beat Justin Kay to the checkers by less than half a car length to win the Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at West Liberty Raceway. The last two champions of the IMCA Late Model tour – Harris in 2013, Kay in 2014 – settled the Tuesday show with a drag race to the finish line. Harris had opened the door with a bobble in the final turn, but recovered in time to outrun Kay. The $3,000 victory was Harris’ career 11th and his third at West Liberty. Kay had won the last three, and four of the last five Deery events there. WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (July 3) – A pair of mid-week shows are next for the Deery Brothers Summer Series. Touring IMCA Late Models race for $3,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start on Tuesday, July 7 at West Liberty Raceway and Wednesday, July 8 at Independence Motor Speedway. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds are also on the slate at West Liberty, racing for $1,000 to win and all applicable points. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow. Nezworski dominates in Deery win at Kossuth County, regains series point lead

ALGONA, Iowa (July 2) – His Thursday night feature win at Kossuth County Speedway did more than put $3,000 in Andy Nezworski’s bank account. His start to finish run at the front of the IMCA Late Model pack put him back on top of point standings for the Deery Brothers Summer Series. The 40-lapper ran caution free and Nezworski had more than a straightaway on runner-up Jeff Aikey when the checkers flew in from of a big Kossuth County crowd. Kay takes Deery win, series point lead at Jackson County

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 9) – Justin Kay’s third Deery Brothers Summer Series feature win of the season put him in a familiar place: Back on top of point standings for the IMCA Late Model tour. Kay passed Tyler Droste and pole starter Dan Shelliam for the lead midway through Tuesday’s 40-lap main event at Jackson County Speedway. Two late cautions kept lapped traffic from becoming an issue and Kay motored to the $3,000 victory, his tour career 12th. Shelliam gained second back from Droste following the final restart, with three laps left. The runner-up finish was his career best. Both the Deery Brothers Summer Series for Late Models and the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds travel to Maquoketa on June 9. Deery drivers make their seventh start of the season. Their main event pays $3,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. Rauen outruns Droste at Marshalltown for first Deery Series win

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (June 2) – Two drivers looking for career first Deery Brothers Summer Series feature wins squared off Tuesday night at Marshalltown Speedway and it was Jason Rauen going home with the trophy and a check for $3,500. Rauen reeled in Tyler Droste on the 42nd lap of the Miller Lite 50 tour event for IMCA Late Models, then pulled ahead to win by four car lengths. IMCA Late Model veterans chase $500 bonuses at Marshalltown Deery

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (May 27) – Veterans of the IMCA Late Model division are in the running for a pair of $500 bonuses when Marshalltown Speedway hosts the Deery Brothers Summer Series on Tuesday, June 2. The Miller Lite 50 tour event pays $3,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. Former promoter Steve Priske, now the owner of Rumour’s Bar & Grill in Marshalltown, will also pay a $500 bonus to the highest finishing Late Model driver who competed at Marshalltown between 1985 and 1990, plus another $500 bonus if that driver can win the main event. Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls, a seven-time tour champion, took home both bonuses from the Deery feature held last year, during the track’s 50th anniversary season. Kay becomes first to repeat with Deery checkers at Boone

BOONE, Iowa (May 25) – Justin Kay became the first repeat winner this season in the Deery Brothers Summer Series, on the night Richie Gustin nearly raced to his first IMCA Late Model tour victory. Gustin caught the defending series champ on the white flag lap Monday at Boone Speedway and had the edge as the front pair charged down the backstretch. The yellow flag was thrown for a spun car in the upcoming set of turns, however, and Kay got the front spot back for the restart as the leader of the last scored lap. Jeff Aikey caught Gustin for second but couldn’t challenge Kay, who topped the green, white, checkered finish by two car lengths. The $3,000 win was the series career 11th for Kay, who also banked the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing prize.
