Huettl holds off Modified field at Jamestown

By Michael Savaloja The Jamestown Sun JAMESTOWN, N.D. (June 25) – Jordan Huettl didn’t lead the first lap on Saturday at Jamestown Speedway. But that was OK. He led the rest. The Minot driver took over the top spot of the 20-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature on lap two after starting on the outside pole. Huettl then glued his no. 4 machine to the cushion near the top of the racing surface and never looked back. It was back-to-back wins for Huettl. He was coming off Thursday’s Topless Night victory at Nodak Speedway in Minot. “We kind of got tangled up on the start a little bit. Toyne picks up first Stock Car win at Cotton Bowl

Hallas PAIGE, Texas (June 25) – Duane Toyne, who has raced in Kansas and Texas and on both asphalt and dirt, scored his first-ever IMCA Stock Car victory against a stout field Saturday at Cotton Bowl Speedway. Toyne started outside row two but lost ground on the start. He methodically worked his way back to the front, catching early leader Joe O’Bryan in the final laps. Toyne got inside O’Bryan, with the two side-by-side, before Toyne inched ahead. O’Bryan tried to crossover on the final lap, but it was Toyne taking the checkers. “This car was one I picked that was built in Nebraska. I don’t know much of the history on it. It’s a fairly older car, built in ’09, but it’s had all the updates on it and drove like a dream tonight,” he said. “The motor is from Kansas, also. Natural Bridge win is Virginia Sprint Series first for Leraas

NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (June 25) – It really paid to have the number seven on your IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car as Mike Leraas in his 77 and Troy Severin in his 7 had the Virginia Sprint Series field covered Saturday at Natural Bridge Speedway. The win was the series first for Leraas, who was chased to the checkers by Severin. Leraas and Tony Harris led the field to green with Harris out first and Leraas right behind. Harris led until lap four when Leraas moved by and went to the high side The leader was really making time, leaving Harris to fight with Severin for the runner-up spot. Severin finally got by on lap eight and went after Harris. They pulled away as Tom Humphries made his way to third. Humphries tried to get by Severin a couple times but the number seven cars were good up high and they both stayed smooth and fast all the way to the checkered flag. Green, white, checkered effective at Off Road

(June 25) – Strangely, three of four featured IMCA races became two-lap winner-take-all competitions Saturday night at the Off Road Speedway. Only the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock division was able to race caution-free. However, the Mach-1 Sport Compacts, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods all became sprints to the finish with all-or-nothing strategy required to cross the finish line first. The Hobby Stock feature, won by Tiffany Bittner, with Mark Arduser and Jeremy Hoskinson finishing second and third, respectively, also provided evidence of track conditions that allowed drivers to venture almost anywhere effectively, with several racers taking their cars high and near the wall entering into a curve then gaining momentum by coming back down into the low part of the track to slingshot past cars, an approach that extended into the feature races which followed. Yeack wins Willamette’s Modified Madness 50

By Ben Deatherage LEBANON, Ore. (June 25) – Kyle Yeack led the last 10 circuits in winning Saturday’s Modified Madness 50 special at Willamette Speedway. Sam Potter blazed the trail in the early going of the 50-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature. He was pressured by Kevin Roberts and the two would exchange the lead for several laps. Unfortunately, Potter and Roberts would collect one another on lap 18. That incident gave the lead to Matthew Drager. Drager was very fast and looked for his second win of the year, but a late-race caution changed the complexion of the contest. On the ensuing restart, Drager stayed in front but before too long was on the defense with Yeack in pursuit. Yeack made the pass for the top spot on lap 40 and held on for the final 10 laps to win his first IMCA Modified race of 2016 at Willamette. Cohoon takes Tri-City Modified checkers

AUBURN, Mich. (June 24) – Chris Cohoon collected the first Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified checkers of his career in front of a very full grandstand Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway. Cohoon and Matt Szecsodi brought the field of 19 IMCA Modifieds to the green flag for their 20-lap affair. The two swapped the lead a number of times in the opening five laps before Cohoon was able to clear Szecsodi. Cohoon ran the bottom of the track as both Craig Vance and Arkansas driver Heath Grizzle would run the high side and started pressuring for the lead. Vance had a couple turns at the front before a late-race caution bunched the field for a final three-lap shootout. On the restart, Cohoon found himself holding off an three-wide battle for the win. On the final lap, Grizzle attempted to get to the high side and pass for the lead as he pulled a slide job on Vance, which slowed them both up and allowed Cohoon to hold on for his first-ever Modified feature win [Read More]

Schweikart takes first-ever PASS win at Path Valley

SPRING RUN, Pa. (June 25) – Dale Schweikart drove from the sixth starting spot to pick up his first-ever Pennsylvania Sprint Series win Saturday at Path Valley Speedway. Schweikart used the low groove to overtake veteran Ryan Lynn and move into the top spot, Lynn still managed a second place finish with a contact lens folded over in one eye for much of the race. Drew Ritchey, Zack Newlin and Scott Ellerman rounded out the top five. Schweikart has been with PASS since 2013, running IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars mostly at Clinton County and Path Valley, where he had a string of third-place finishes in recent races. Goedert wins Late Model thriller at Dubuque

By Jerry Mackey DUBUQUE, Iowa (June 26) – Sunday night’s racing action at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway featured plenty of wheel-to-wheel excitement right down to the checkered flag in all four divisions. The headliner of the night was the 25-lap feature for the Out Pace Racing Products IMCA Late Models. The final two laps saw the lead swapped four times between Luke Goedert and Joel Callahan. The final lap saw the leaders battling each other as they encountered lapped traffic. Goedert was able to stick his no. 44 Late Model to the bottom and come to the checkers with a car length win over Callahan. Dan Shelliam joined the lead pack late in the race and settled for a very close third place finish. The Merfeld Brothers IMCA Modified feature saw Monroe, Wis., driver Derrick Thompson score his first-ever Dubuque Speedway win. Gemmill garners Dodge City honors

(June 25) – Brendon Gemmill turned in a dominant performance to capture his first 20-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature win of the year during Saturday’s H&H Roofing Night atop the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval. Gemmill started the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event from the front row outside and led throughout to capture the win by nearly a straightaway. After a pair of incidents eliminated one-third of the 21-car field before a lap was completed, Gemmill gunned into the lead and was a straightaway ahead of Tracy Link and Ryan Heger when the caution flew after eight laps. While his lead was erased, Gemmill wasted little time reestablishing his advantage and held it to the line. In his wake, Heger raced into second and held the spot the rest of the way with Link, Tom Beavers and William Nusser rounding out the top five. Pickett prevails in Boone Stock Car feature

BOONE, Iowa (June 25) – Saturday’s racing at the Boone Speedway saw three drivers stepping into victory lane for the first time, while another returned for the third and fourth time. Tyler Pickett finally got the elusive win in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division and Daniel Tasler won for the first time this season in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, as did Chad LeGere in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. It took only four laps before eighth place starter Pickett gained the lead in a Stock Car feature that ran green to checkered. Pickett never relinquished that top spot, keeping it to the flying checkers and the win. Jay Schmidt out fought Donavon Smith as they went second and third, respectively.
