Allen races close to home, collects Kennedale checkers

KENNEDALE, Texas (Oct. 7) – A wet weekend forecast in Kansas convinced Chase Allen to race closer to home. That decision proved to be good for $2,500. Despite battling brake issues much of the way, Allen led all 25 laps of the Saturday main event for IMCA Modifieds at Kennedale Speedway Park’s Summit Racing Equipment Showdow The Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying victory came ahead of Chris Elliott, Chad Melton, Josh McGaha and Chris Bragg. “I was just the glad the car was turning so good,” said Allen, who built up a sizable advantage before the last caution waved with four laps to go. “We changed our plans to race at Fall Nationals (at RPM Speedway in Hays, Kan.) because it’s hard to drive past a track that’s 15 minutes from your home. I didn’t get to race here as often as I would have liked this year but Kennedale is a track I know pretty well.” Rain the previous weekend had forced rescheduling of the fall special at Kennedale. Keeton flies to first win in Virginia Sprint Series finale

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (Sept. 30) – Mike Keeton was fast at the front and stayed there all the way to his first win Saturday on the final night of the 20th annual Virginia Sprint Series. The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car checkers came Saturday at Shenandoah Speedway, ahead of Jerald Harris and Anthony Linkenhoker. The feature-only event rolled off with Bill Rice and Keeton on the front row. When the green flew, Keeton stayed high while Rice was on the bottom and hugging the line. Pavement races really fly by and Harris was keeping close but not getting alongside while Linkenhoker made it to third. Rain can’t dampen Great Lakes Nationals win by Wonch

CRYSTAL, Mich. (Sept. 17) – That rain early in Sunday’s Great Lakes Nationals main event at Crystal Motor Speedway didn’t bother Austin Wonch a bit. Wonch was running third when the precipitation started, and ran the 10 or so track packing laps that followed confident he’d be able to work his way to the front of the IMCA Modified field. After doing just that, Wonch led the last 45 of 50 laps and took the $3,000 checkers ahead of John McClure. A.J. Ward, Mitchell Hunt and Myron DeYoung rounded out the top five in the typically stellar Great Lakes Nationals field. The heavy hitters of the division in Michigan made it a point to congratulate Wonch in victory lane and post-race tech. “You know you did something right when it’s them congratulating you,” said the 19-year-old speedster from Stanton. “Once we got the rain, I knew I’d be able to use the bottom. When I didn’t see anybody’s nose, I realized I was holding my own.” “I didn’t know what to think at first after [Read More]
