Top IMCA Modified, Late Model drivers earn Sweet steering boxes

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – IMCA Modified and IMCA Late Model drivers benefit again this season from support by Sweet Manufacturing. The manufacturer of the official steering box of IMCA continues contingency awards for a ninth season. Sweet is in its fourth season as part of the national decal program for Modifieds. Champions in each of the five Modified regions and the top driver in national Late Model point standings all earn steering boxes while second through fifth place finishers in each Modified region receive $50 gift certificates from the Kalamazoo, Mich., manufacturer. Drivers in both divisions must compete with two Sweet Manufacturing decals on their race cars to be eligible. Dodge City championship chases to the critical stage on Saturday

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – It’s getting down to the nitty gritty at Dodge City Raceway Park. And Saturday’s championship chase tilt is critical in points chases for each of the Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. Saturday’s racing action goes green at 7:30 p.m. Only two more nights of championship chase action remain after Saturday’s event including the Saturday, Sept. 1 Labor Day Weekend special and then the sixth annual Jerry Soderberg Memorial Championship event on Sept. 15. General admission for Saturday’s championship chase action at Dodge City is $15 with children 11 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Season championships Sunday at Dubuque

By Jerry Mackey DUBUQUE, Iowa – This Sunday, Aug. 26, Dubuque Hose & Hydraulics will present the 2018 season championship races at Dubuque Speedway. Track championships will be decided in both the Merfeld Brothers Auto IMCA Modified and GSI Collision Specialists IMCA Northern SportMod divisions. Fans in attendance on Sunday night will have an opportunity to win tickets to the 41st annual Yankee Dirt Track Classic. A drawing from the ticket stubs will be held prior to the features on and three lucky fans will win three-day Yankee tickets. Farley Speedway will host the Yankee Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.

Weekly IMCA Late Model point season ends this weekend

VINTON, Iowa – The 2018 IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season for Late Models ends this weekend, with final point races on Sunday, Aug. 26. National and state points for the division will be given through the final Deery Brothers Summer Series event, now scheduled on Sept. 21. The point season for all other IMCA divisions ends Sunday, Sept. 30.

Hicks Memorial Shootout is Friday at US 36

OSBORN, Mo. – Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 8 p.m. Friday night, Aug. 24, when US 36 Raceway hosts the second annual Wayne Hicks Memorial Shootout for Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. In addition to an increased purse, Northern SportMod drivers are in the running for drawing prizes. It’s also championship night for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars at Osborn.

Mullen denies Andersen weekend sweep

By Edward Anschutz SEYMOUR, Wis. (Aug. 19) – J.J. Andersen went into the Sunday night IMCA Modified event at Outagamie Speedway seeking a weekend sweep but Brian Mullen had other ideas. The winner Friday at Luxemburg Speedway and Saturday at 141 Speedway, Anderson jumped to the early lead and appeared to be well on his way to completing the 3-for-3 weekend. Mullen raced from row four into the runner-up spot on lap five. With Andersen and Mullen both running the top groove, it looked as if that’s how they would finish but a caution on lap eight changed everything. With Mullen restarting down low, Andersen switched to the bottom of the track and allowed Mullen the preferred line up top. Mullen took the lead, going unchallenged the remainder of the event for the win. Andersen ended in second. Tyler Wilson, Johnny Whitman and Benji LaCrosse completed the top five. Trenchard scores at Southern Oregon Speedway

(Aug. 18) – Taking the lead from Jantzen Knips on the fourth lap, Nick Trenchard went on to win his second IMCA Modified main event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. It had been a last-minute decision for Trenchard to go racing. He’d won the $2,000 prize in the Roger Haudenshild Tribute race earlier this year and has positioned himself as one of the favorites to win the $5,000 R. Charles Snyder Salute on Labor Day Weekend. Knips raced into the early lead ahead of Duane Orsburn. Dave Duste Jr. led Trenchard around Orsburn on the second lap and a high pass on the fourth lap gained Trenchard the lead. Moments later, Knips spun for a caution flag. Trenchard pulled away after a couple later restarts and won ahead of Albert Gill and Zach Fettinger. Matt Sanders became the seventh different Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod winner in as many events this season at White City, holding off a late challenge from Rich McCoy.

Noteboom makes history at Park Jefferson

JEFFERSON, S.D. (Aug. 18) – IMCA Modified driver Jay Noteboom stole the show Saturday at Park Jefferson Speedway. Noteboom notched career win number 74 at Park Jefferson to pass Late Model Hall of Fame driver Joe Kosiski as the speedway’s all-time feature winner. With tears in his eyes, Noteboom accepted the checkers and trophy from flagman Nate Peterson. It was not an easy battle in the Artworks Graphics IMCA Modified special, as Chris Abelson was first to move to the lead on the multi-lane oval. Toward the late stages, Abelson drifted high off the track and gave up the lead. Noteboom saw his chance and pounced, then held off the challenges of Bob Moore to take the historic win. Abelson was third. Ryan Voss took the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car win and Colin Smith the unofficial 2018 track championship.

Phillips captures much-anticipated Hobby Stock win at Stuart

By Cyndie Lamb STUART, Iowa (Aug. 17) – There were some emotions in victory lane to be sure, following Jack Phillips’ IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock win Friday at Stuart Speedway. Phillips held off all challengers in taking the checkers and his post-race speech was emotional as he announced this was his first win in 25 years. John Watson was second and Jeremy Purdy third. Clint Luellen led the IMCA Modifieds to the checkers and Brandon Pruitt was best in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature. Austin Luellen topped the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature and Hunter Patrick paced the Mach-1 Sport Compacts.
