Probst wins 100th Saturday at Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. (June 23) – Cory Probst raced his way into the history book on a historical Saturday night at Arlington Raceway. Probst won for the 100th time in his IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock career, after starting 10th and racing into contention by just the fourth circuit. Karl Hewitt had the lead ahead of Steve Kroyer – driving Probst’s 2017 car – but pulled in on the backstretch with mechanical problems. By the next lap, Probst weaved around Kroyer and had command of the race. He led the rest of the way for the milestone win. Kroyer held tight for second and Jed Trebelhorn took third. Probst became the 100th driver in IMCA’s modern era to reach the 100 win mark and the record fifth to do so at Arlington. Arlington was also the site of 100th wins by Curt Lund (Modified) in 2013, Jeff McCollum (Stock Car) in 2014, Dan Mackenthun (Stock Car) in 2015 and Justin Luinenburg (Hobby Stock) last year. Thornton dominates $10,000 to win IMCA Clash at the Creek

By Mike Spieker FRANCIS CREEK, Wis. (June 21) – Ricky Thornton Jr. dominated Thursday’s IMCA Modified Clash at the Creek at 141 Speedway to earn the $10,000 payday. Already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, Thornton led all 50 trips around the smooth and slick 1/3-mile dirt oval. The Clash did double duty as an Arnold Motor Supply Dirt Knights Tour event, the first such held outside Iowa. Eighty-two Modifieds were entered and seven states were represented in the main event. Thornton grabbed the lead from the pole on the opening lap as Mike Mullen filed into second. A gaggle of cars, including Hunter Marriott, Joel Rust, Kyle Stickler and Benji LaCrosse, raced for the final positions inside the top five. Thornton immediately checked out from the field, establishing a one second lead over Mullen in the first five laps. Like Thornton, the rest of the drivers inside the top five ran the low side of the speedway until Strickler countered that trend. Strickler went to the top side and quickly began picking off cars, [Read More]

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. Ward gets career fourth Greased Pig win

By Roger Williams AUBURN, Mich. (June 15) – The first race in the new dirt track era of Tri-City Motor Speedway took place in mid-June back in 2011. Each year, Tri-City commemorates the occasion with the annual Greased Pig special for the IMCA Modifieds. On Friday night, A.J. Ward won the event for the fourth time and earned $2,018. Chris Cohoon started on the pole and led the field to green flag but his night ended early because of mechanical problems. With Cohoon out, the lead was handed to Matt Szecsodi, who took advantage of a long green flag run and began to pull away from the field. However, with 31 laps down and 10 to go, a caution bunched up the field and put the ninth starting Ward and defending track champion Kody Johnson on Szecsodi’s rear bumper. Ward fought Szecsodi using the bottom groove as the two tussled over the final seven circuits. The two-time defending Dirt Works Eastern Region champion, already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, was finally able to [Read More]
