Baca reigns at IMCA.TV Winter Nationals, night six wins to Ryland, Johnson, Olson

By Ben Deatherage SOMERTON, Ariz. – The defending Shaw Race Cars Western Region champion parked in victory lane Friday, night six of the IMCA.TV Winter Nationals at Cocopah Speedway. Chaz Baca took the lead in the opening stages of the IMCA Modified feature. Baca eventually was tracked down and passed on lap 13 by Tim Ward. Ward attempted to construct a sizable interval over Baca and the rest of the field but ran into heavy lapped traffic. In the closing stages of the feature Ward and Baca dueled one another for the win. Baca made a decisive pass in slower traffic that gave him the advantage on the final circuit and held on for the $1,000 win in the non-stop race. It was his first of the season and marked the fourth different winner in six races at the Winter Nationals. Baca was already of the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Bombardo, Partain, Dotson, Spangler get wins in fast-paced IMCA.TV Winter Nationals features

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 14) – Brandon Bombardo, Bo Partain, Ethan Dotson and Aaron Spangler all took their turns in victory lane during the course of 85 consecutive caution-free laps on night five of the IMCA.TV Winter Nationals at Cocopah Speedway. Bombardo led start to finish in an IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature last interrupted by a caution with 10 laps to go. Partain and Dotson duplicated that flag-to-flag feat in 25-lap Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod and IMCA Modified main events, respectively. Spangler then inherited the front spot 11 laps into the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature after leader Kyle Heckman drove off with a flat tire. He held off Andy Altenburg to the end of a third consecutive green to checkered 25-lapper. Two repeat at IMCA.TV Winter Nationals, Osantowski, Olson get first Cocopah wins

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 9) – Tanner Black and Kyle Heckman were repeat winners while Brian Osantowski and Matt Olson both made first visits to victory lane Saturday, on night four of the IMCA.TV Winter Nationals at Cocopah Speedway. Black led every lap of the IMCA Modified feature but had to hold off the hard-charging Ethan Dotson for the $1,000 checkers. Heckman made his way to the front following a lap six restart, then outran Blake Adams and Michael Sheen as the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature stayed green the last 19 circuits. Osantowski checked out on the rest of the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod field before encountering lapped traffic and three late cautions, finally running away from Miles Morris and Austen Becerra in a one-lap dash to the finish. Arneson dominates IMCA Modifieds at Cocopah, Knutson captures 3rd straight Winter Nationals win

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 8) – Casey Arneson led every lap of the IMCA Modified feature while Eric Knutson led just enough of the race to capture a third straight IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock victory Friday at Cocopah Speedway’s IMCA.TV Winter Nationals. Arneson, from North Dakota, topped a $1,000 to win, Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying headliner that ended with 24 consecutive green flag laps. Ricky Alvarado moved into second on the fifth circuit but was not able to mount a serious threat to the leader. Dotson dials up IMCA.TV Winter Nationals win, Cocopah entries at 164 for night two

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 7) – Once he got to the front, there was no catching Ethan Dotson on another record night at Cocopah Speedway’s IMCA.TV Winter Nationals. Dotson started 12th in the Thursday night IMCA Modified feature at Somerton, then took the lead on the 15th circuit following a restart that had seen frontrunner Alex Stanford exit with mechanical issues. The California hotshoe then outran opening night winner Tanner Black for the $1,000 victory and accompanying Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth. One hundred and sixty-four drivers vied in the second installment of Winter Nationals, including 64 Modifieds and 52 Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods. Patient Black cashes in, collects checkers on record night at IMCA.TV Winter Nationals

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 6) – Patience put $1,000 in Tanner Black’s pocket. With a record 161 entries in the pits for opening night of the IMCA.TV Winter Nationals, Black returned to his home state to win Wednesday’s feature for IMCA Modifieds at Cocopah Speedway. He reeled in Russell Allen on the 16th circuit in a fast-paced main event that ran 25 caution-free laps. “I decided I needed to roll around the bottom and be patient,” said Black, who’d run second the first 15 times around the track. “Maybe he’d make a mistake and I could get around him.” Allen ended in second while defending track and Shaw Race Cars Western Region champion Chaz Baca was third. Pettit aces IMCA Modified feature in Antioch opener

ANTIOCH, Calif. (Jan. 2) – Jim Pettit II came up big in the first IMCA Modified feature of the season Saturday at Antioch Speedway. Pettit started on the pole and led all 30 laps for the win, holding off a series of challengers for the $1,000, Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying victory on a perfectly prepared fast, multi-groove oval. Up to the task following each of three restarts, Pettit led the 17th starting Nick DeCarlo, Troy Foulger, Kellen Chadwick and Bobby Hogge IV to the checkers. Todd Gomez and Cody Johnson also raced their way to Antioch’s victory lane on Saturday, in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod and IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main events, respectively. IMCA Stock Cars chase $1,000 top check at Arizona Speedway’s New Year’s Day special

SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. – IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars start the 2021 season with a $1,000 to win main event at Arizona Speedway’s 10th annual New Year’s Day special. Forty laps will be the distance for the Jan. 1 feature and IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, regional and KMJ Performance Arizona State points will be awarded. Transponders are required. Pit gates open at 10:30 a.m. and spectator gates open at 11:30 a.m. Racing starts at 1 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults and kids 11 and under are free. Bilstein signs as division sponsor, $5,000 national point fund announced for Modified Lite STARS

IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars, Northern SportMods to open new season Jan. 2 at Antioch Speedway

ANTIOCH, Calif. – The track Where Action Is The Attraction opens for 2021 with three IMCA divisions on the Saturday, Jan. 2 card. Antioch Speedway hosts IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods in its first show of the new season, with IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, regional and KMJ Performance California State points to be awarded. Pit gates open at noon and hot laps are at 3 p.m. with racing to follow. Pit passes are $50 and face masks must be worn any time drivers or crew members are outside their pit area.
