Champions crowned at Marshalltown

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Aug. 23) – It was the Larry Wollam Season Championship night on Friday at the Marshalltown Speedway where family, friends, and fans celebrated the man who was such an inspiration to the track and racing in general.  It was the 20th anniversary of the passing of Wollam, who had been a racer, promoter, and big supporter of the speedway. Leah Wroten had the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock track title wrapped up before the race began, leading by 40 points.  It also appeared that she won the 15-lap feature race, but that was not the case.  Wroten led all laps but when she got into Kaden Reynolds as they approached the checkers, spinning him out, she was penalized for the contact and the victory was awarded to Jacob Floyd. This was Floyd’s first time ever to win at the Marshalltown Speedway.  Jake McBirnie kept his point lead in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature, winning the track crown and also added to his quest in the hunt for the national title [Read More]

Lauritzen takes thrilling Modified win

By Joyce Eisele  MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Aug. 2) – Two drivers earned their first local victories of the year in the IMCA Modified and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod divisions, while the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks saw repeat winners Friday at Marshalltown Speedway. The 20-lap IMCA Modified feature was up for grabs between three drivers. Tim Ward hustled from 10th starting to the lead by lap seven, only to have Joel Rust and Ronn Laurtizen tag in behind. Rust got the upper hand with six laps left but it was still anyone’s race between Rust, Lauritzen, and Ward as the laps wound down. Lauritzen gained the lead on lap 18 only to have Rust regain it on the white flag lap, but the race the checkers found Lauritzen surging ahead to cross the finish line first.  Rust was the runner-up followed closely by Ward in third. A yellow at lap 13 bunched the Northern SportMod field and on the restart, Johnathon Logue made the pass into the runner-up spot, and then with [Read More]

Aikey takes two wins at Marshalltown’s DeFrance/Davis Memorial

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (July 11) – Jeff Aikey put on quite the show at Marshalltown Speedway’s Dale DeFrance/Bill Davis Sr. Memorial, winning IMCA Modified and IMCA Late Model features to bring the curtain down on the Thursday show.  The finale was 44 laps of Late Model racing, in honor of the late DeFrance’s car number.  Fittingly, his son Darrel drew the pole start, then led until Brian Harris nosed under him to take over at lap five.  Harris soon had Richie Gustin to contend with, and after running side-by-side, and a couple of slide jobs, Gustin made it stick and took over the lead. The race was far from over however, as a pair of no. 77 cars came calling.  Visiting York, Neb. racer, Cory Dumpert moved from 14th starting to run second and Aikey had moved from 19th starting to third. The closing circuits saw Aikey make his move and he took over the top spot. He held on to the checkers and $1,500 payday.  Dumpert was second, DeFrance took third, fourth [Read More]
