IMCA Speedweek opener at Clay County sees O’Neil duplicate Spencer Stock Car heroics

SPENCER, Iowa (Aug. 2) – A driver from Arizona has found a new home in victory lane at Clay County Fair Speedway. Jake O’Neil drew the pole for Monday night’s IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event and led all 40 laps of a fast-paced IMCA Speedweek opening event, collecting $5,000 and a starting spot in the upcoming B & B Chassis All-Star Invitational. “It helped starting on the front row,” said O’Neil, from Tucson and also the winner of last week’s Hunting With Heroes Salute to Veterans feature at Spencer. “I wasn’t sure where to be on the race track. I could feel spots of rubber here and there on the track. The last 10, 15 laps I could feel my brakes kind of going out and I couldn’t hit her like I needed to.” Randy Brands headed the early pursuit, giving up the second spot to Tom Berry following a lap seven restart. Berry kept O’Neil in his sights as 13th starting Kelly Shryock and 16th starting Dallon Murty moved through the field during a long [Read More]

Good lap, good line good for Brown, Green in IMCA Midwest Madness Tour at Clay County

Top-notch rookie contender Thompson had passed Chris Abelson for the Modified lead, then swapped the front spot with Brown before the late caution. Brown restarted on the inside, caught Thompson the next time around and then focused on becoming an All-Star candidate. “I just made a really good lap. It was a really good race. Clay County Speed Shift TV Dirt Knights IMCA Modified checkers fly for Abelson

SPENCER, Iowa (Aug. 3) – The top side of the big Clay County Fair Speedway oval took Chris Abelson to victory lane in Monday’s Speed Shift TV Dirt Knights Tour IMCA Modified main event. Forty entries from nine different states vied in the fourth round of the 2020 tour and after Tanner Black led the first two laps, Abelson took charge on the high groove. Kelly Shryock made a charge of his own from 11th starting but ran out of laps and ended in second.  “The cushion kept getting closer and closer to the wall. You had to negotiate it just right,” Abelson said. “He’s (Shryock) a tough competitor and always one to look for.”  Abelson had started fourth and quickly drove past Brandon Beckendorf, Nick Meyer and Black to take over the front spot. Cautions on laps six and 10 brought the field back together briefly before Abelson was pulling away. Jesse Rogotzke worked his way to third late in the 25-lapper, Nick Meyer was fourth and tour point leader Ethan Braaksma was fifth.  Meyer [Read More]
