Pruitt, Watson are opening night Hobby Stock heroes at Boone

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 7) – Mike Pruitt and John Watson punched their tickets to front row starting spots in Saturday’s Hobby Stock main event, with qualifying feature wins on opening night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Pruitt, the 2009 Northern SportMods champion, raced from 12th starting to win the first qualifier and earn the pole start in the big dance at Boone Speedway. He caught race-long leader Adam Armstrong on the 21st of 25 laps and took the checkers ahead of Myles Michehl. Watson took over the front spot just before midway in the second qualifier and held off Eric Stanton the last half of the contest. He’ll start in the middle of the front row on Saturday. Last year’s runner-up, Pruitt started sixth and reined in Nathan Ballard before catching Armstrong, who rolled in the first set of turn to bring a stop to the first qualifier with three laps to go. Living a Dream

Riley Raynard doesn’t let Duchenne Muscular Dystophy slow him down. He’s living a dream racing at his first Super Nationals. Just a couple weeks removed from his 18th birthday, the Lampman, Sask., hotshoe and family loaded up the trailer for the 15-hour trip to Boone. “It’s amazing,” he said, just prior to starting the second Hobby Stock heat. “I know from hot laps there are long straightaways and sharp corners here.” “The other guys I’ve talked to about racing here told me to go out and do my best. Racing at Super Nationals is something I’ve always wanted to do,” he added. Recipient of the prestigious Ken Schrader Real Racer Award, Raynard is runner-up in points at Estevan Motor Speedway and will also be among the drivers attempting to qualify for the Stephenville Starter Race of Champions.

Start of opening day at Super Nationals postponed to 3:30 p.m.

Due to the weather, we will have the following changes to today’s (Mon., Sept. 7) program: The Late Model portion of today’s show will be postponed to Thursday, Sept 10. Today’s racing program will begin at 3:30 p.m. It will be the same program minus Late Models. Pits will open at 10:30 a.m. today. Grandstands at 2 p.m. Pit pass $25. Grandstand Adult $15. Kay completes Liberty 100 Deery Weekend sweep

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (Sept. 5) – The Ideal Ready Mix Liberty 100 Weekend turned out to be a $7,000 weekend for Justin Kay. A night after winning the Iron Man Challenge and $1,000, Kay topped a pair of 50-lap, $3,000 to win features for IMCA Late Models at West Liberty Raceway. The first of those Saturday victories was also Kay’s seventh this season in the Deery Brothers Summer Series. He’ll run for a record-tying fourth straight tour win on Sept. 7 at Boone Speedway, on opening night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Kay started the first feature from outside row one and led every circuit. Cautions on laps 15 and 38 kept the race closer but Kay still took the win well ahead of Jeff Aikey, Brian Harris, Tyler Droste and Tyler Bruening. Kay wins Iron Man on opening night of Liberty 100

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (Sept. 4) – Justin Kay proved up to the challenge on opening night of the Liberty 100 Weekend at West Liberty Raceway. Kay led the last 12 laps in winning Friday’s Ideal Ready Mix Iron Man Challenge, open to all Deery Brothers Summer Series drivers with perfect attendance this season and all former IMCA Late Model tour champions. The victory paid $1,000. Darrel DeFrance led the first two of 20 circuits from the pole. Joe Zrostlik led lap three, then Jeff Aikey enjoyed the view from the front for four trips around the track before the seventh starting Kay sped by. Kay captures third straight IMCA Late Model national crown

VINTON, Iowa (Sept. 4) – Justin Kay joined some pretty good company by winning another IMCA Late Model national championship. From Wheatland, Kay won 17 features and the track championship at Dubuque Speedway to total 814 points and top national standings for the division for a third consecutive season. That matches the accomplishment of 2010-2012 king Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill. Kay earns a $5,500 share of a $21,300 point fund to be paid to top 20 finishers in the national ranks. “The first one is still the best but the third one is pretty cool,” Kay said. “National championships get tougher to win.
