Shryock scores IMCA Modified feature win at Boone

By Joyce Eisele BOONE, Iowa (July 18) – Kelly Shryock stated in victory lane that it had been a long time coming to get a feature win at Boone Speedway, but at the end of Saturday’s 20-lap feature for IMCA Modifieds, that is just what he did. Shryock had to fend off some tough competition close behind him much of the race as Randy Havlik, Paul Nagle and Collen Winebarger jousted for position. Nagle made the move around Randy Havlik in the closing laps as they finished second and third, respectively. Winebarger would take fourth place and fellow Oregonian Grey Ferrando took fifth.The 20-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature was a nail biter right down to the final moments. Devin Smith finally broke from the pack and began to catch up with frontrunners Justin Nehring and Jay Schmidt. He did so with just a few laps remaining, and with the help of a lapped car on the final circuit, dove low and stuck it to sneak around both Nehring and Schmidt and beat both to the checkers. Hutchinson Nationals URSS checkers fly for Velasquez

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (July 17) – For the first time in history, the Mel Hambelton Ford Racing POWRi United Rebel Sprint Series competed at the Hutchinson Nationals. Taylor Velasquez of Liberal, Kansas captured his first win of the year with the series at the 64th event Friday at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, becoming the ninth different winner in eleven races. Jordan Knight and J.D. Johnson set the pace for the 20-lap feature. Knight took off with the early lead while Williams worked his way from fifth starting to second by lap 11. Knight and Velasquez battled hard and made contact with a few laps remaining. Velasquez got past Knight for the lead on lap 19. By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (July 17) – CJ Speedway fans were treated to a classic battle in Friday’s IMCA Sunoco Stock main event. Twenty drivers took the green flag with young Austin Kemper setting the pace for the first half of the main event. While Kemper led, a fierce battle was being waged behind him. Jason See, who had advanced from the seventh position start, was able to break out of the pack of contenders and into second before moving by Kemper on lap 11. See went on to score the win over a hard-charging Adam Bell, who was looking to become a repeat winner at CJ Speedway. Bell was able to get beside See on several occasions before setting for second as Johnny Spaw battled to the front from 11th. Cody Staley captured the mach-1 Sport Compact feature over Brad Havel and William Michel.

Third win for Bowers at U.S. 36

By Jacob Blair OSBORN, Mo. – Steven Bowers Jr. motored to his third IMCA Modified win of the season at U.S. 36 Raceway Friday night. Shayne Bailey jumped to the early lead and would pace the field. Before the first caution of the race on lap seven, Bailey had stretched the gap out comfortably, while Bowers and Chad Andersen started their journey through the field. By halfway, both Bowers and Andersen had worked their way into the top five. While Andersen momentarily stalled out in the fifth position, Bowers charged up to second and began working different lines trying to find a way around Bailey. As Bowers made his move with five laps to go, the second and final caution of the race flew, keeping Bailey at the point. On the restart, Bailey earned some breathing room and looked well on his way to Westfall GMC Victory Lane. Murty takes $1,000 win, Richards collects bounty, first career win

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (July 17) – The Chelsea Charger Damon Murty went home $1,000 richer when he took the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers and Braden Richards took the bounty money in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks as well as getting his first career win Friday at Marshalltown Speedway. The featured race of the evening was the 20-lap event for Stock Cars. Veteran Robert Stofer led the opening laps but soon had a flying Murty coming fast on the topside, and running him down. On lap four, Murty took command, sailing to the lead. A caution at lap nine saw Stofer briefly take back the lead on the restart, only to have Murty come right back around and into the lead, keeping it to the checkers and the $1,000 payday. Dustin Vis took the runner up spot, Steve Meyer made a late race charge to finish third, Kenzie Ritter had a good run and finished fourth, and David Brandies came home in fifth. Mike Mullen masters IMCA Modified main at Outagamie

By Edward Anschutz SEYMOUR, Wis. (July 17) – Shawn Freilich jumped to the point of the IMCA Modified feature Friday at Outagamie Speedway. His reign up front didn’t last long as ‘Mighty’ Mike Mullen blasted to lead on lap four. Benji LaCrosse came to call midway through the contest as he worked into the runner-up position. LaCrosse closed in late but it was Mullen scoring the win. LaCrosse had to settle for second place pay, Josh Long took third, Marcus Yarie was fourth and Jerry Wilinski completed the top five. The contest went green to checkers. In Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod action, drama unfolded early as point leader Vince Engebregsten didn’t make the call for the starting lineup. Zachary Raab took the lead on lap four and never looked back, cruising to a dominating win. The win was Raab’s first-ever at the speedway. Cole Magnin, Tyler Sobiesczyk, Matt Radtke and Jeff Schmuhl rounded out the top five. Clint Malueg was victorious in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts.

Burns earns first career feature win

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (July 16) – James Burns won his first career feature race to highlight an exciting night of dirt track racing at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday. The big night of racing drew another nice crowd count of 104 cars filling the pit area looking for a tune up for the upcoming Salute to Veterans show. Burns took the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature holding off a late challenge from Brandon Nielsen. The Algona driver was racing with a heavy heart as his grandmother had passed away earlier in the day and in a victory lane interview, dedicated the race to her. Jay Sidles grabbed the early lead before an early caution. The race resumed as Burns used the high side to get past Sidles on lap four. He built a comfortable lead only to see Nielsen closing fast, but Burns slammed the door to set off a wild celebration in victory lane with his first career victory. Tuesday’s Dirt Knights Tour show among events as Jackson Motorplex suspends remaining 2020 schedule

JACKSON, Minn. – Due to the state restrictions, limitations on crowds and lack of recent updates for outdoor venues in Minnesota, the Jackson Motorplex has decided to suspend all remaining events in 2020 effective immediately. Among the events affected is the Tuesday, July 21 Speed Shift TV Dirt Knights Tour for IMCA Modifieds. The 11th annual tour opens July 20 at Park Jefferson Speedway and is at Buena Vista Raceway on July 22. Monday’s main event at Jefferson, S.D., pays $1,500. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and racing follows 6:30 p.m. hot laps. And on Wednesday at Alta, Iowa, the feature pays $1,000 to win with gates opening at 5 p.m. and racing following 7 p.m. hot laps. Both tour events are 2020 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying events.
