Abelson repeats at Raceway Park

(Aug. 9) – With the track illuminated by lightning all around, Chris Abelson raced to his second straight Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory Sunday at Raceway Park. After being penalized for a restart infraction early in the race, Abelson charged from the rear of the field to the front of the pack with only a handful of laps remaining. Chasing Abelson to the checkers were Jim Thies, Ricky Stephan and Sean Barragan. Eighty-two year old Don Tank became one of a handful of drivers to win a sanctioned IMCA feature over the age of eighty when the first and second place Mach-1 Sport Compacts under the flag failed post race inspection. Former track champion tops McLean County Mod special

UNDERWOOD, N.D (Aug. 6) – Wayne Johnson turned back the calendar Thursday night at McLean County Speedway. The 2000 track champion returned to Underwood to lead all 25 laps of the $1,000 to win Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified Spectacular. “They’ve banked the corners more but other than that, it’s pretty much the same facility,” Johnson said after the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying victory. It’s a really nice, fast track and it was fun to race there again. They put on a pretty good show.” That show went on despite a persistent drizzle. By Larry Lowrey Jr. MAYETTA, Kan. (Aug. 8) – A $1,000 to win feature for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds had a million dollar ending Saturday night at Thunder Hill Speedway. Steven Bowers Jr. beat Josh Everhart to the checkers by all of .009 of a second for the Conle White Memorial win, the big money and a berth on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Travis Neeley shot out to the early lead while Bowers and Everhart worked their way up from row five. Everhart moved up to third while Bowers got tied up in a battle with Tom Charles. On a restart, Everhart took advantage of a bobble by Neeley to take the lead while Bowers struggled, still battling with Charles as he fell back to fifth. The tight racing from second through fifth allow Everhart to get a big lead as the laps clicked away. Luck changes for Savage at Quincy

(Aug. 9) – Brandon Savage shook off the bad luck he has endured this season Sunday at Quincy Raceway, leading every lap for the Powder Coat Plus IMCA Stock Car feature win. Michael Larsen scored second points. Patrick Phillips looked to be well on his way to his second feature win of the season in the Summy Tire and Auto Center IMCA Northern SportMod main event but it wasn’t to be as a last-lap charge by Tony Dunker sent him under the checkered flag first. Trent Orwig dominated the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature event by leading every lap.

Humphries tops third Shenandoah show of season

(Aug. 8) – Tom Humphries was smooth from start to finish in showing the rest of the field the way to the finish line in Saturday’s Virginia Sprint Series main event at Shenandoah Speedway. Bill Rice and Charlie Ware paced the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car field to green. Rice shot out to the lead and Jerald Harris followed to second. Humphries was on the gas and at lap five went around both cars and took the lead, bringing Harris along. Humphries and Harris went at it lap after lap but with the checkered flag waving Harris could only get close as Humphries was first at the line. Wilinski repeats Shawano success

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (Aug. 8) – Jerry Wilinski scored his second straight Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature and fourth local checkers overall Saturday at Shawano Speedway. Wilinski made his pass of Eddie Muenster for the lead stick on lap 14. Muenster gave chase for the rest of the race but couldn’t catch up. Mechanical woes forced third-running Jeremy Christians to pit on lap 17. Engine problems in the heat race forced Travis Van Straten to scratch from the IMCA Stock Car feature, putting an end to his 11-race win streak in the process. Steven Stewart took the lead on lap one and clearly had the car to beat. No one was able to make a serious challenge for the lead. Behind Stewart though Mike Schmidt, Dustin Loberger, Joe White, and Kyle Frederick fought hard for position. On lap seven Loberger raced to second behind Stewart. Rust shines at Marshalltown

By Jeremy Fox MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Aug. 7) – Joel Rust bested the Coors Light IMCA Modified field for his first local win in the open wheeled division Friday at Marshalltown. Brandon Leeman, Rod Clement and Jake Strayer split time up front before Rust worked the top side to take the lead away on lap 16. Strayer powered back on lap 17 but Rust did not give up and took the lead back for good with two laps to go. Strayer ended at the runner-up and Scott Simatovich was third. Other winners included Donavon Smith in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Jared VanDeest in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Eric Stanton in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. Smith’s victory was his career 96th in the class.

Another young driver wins first feature at Off Road

(Aug. 8) – A week after Gage Koch, a junior at Norfolk Catholic High School, won his first feature in the Hobby Stock division at Off Road Speedway, Joey Haase – who will be entering his junior year at Winside High School this fall – earned his first win in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division Saturday night. The two have crossed paths on a racetrack before as competitors for two seasons in the now-defunct junior hornet class at Riviera Raceway a few years ago. Haase won the division title in their first year of racing, while Koch won the second year. Haase took advantage of his outside second row starting position along with the race’s second caution and restart to obtain the lead, then held off pursuer Justin Addison for the final 13 laps of the 18-lap race. “These last few weeks I’ve had a lot of bad luck. Roth’s latest visit to Eagle unforgettable for a better reason

His latest start there proved unforgettable for a better reason, as Roth won the NAPA IMCA Modified main event. “This was great, sweeping my heat and the feature. It sure was better than the last time we were here, flipping seven times,” said Roth, who’d drawn the outside row one start. “I went into the first corner like there was no tomorrow.” Eric Cronin was a first-time Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact winner. Mike Boston raced to his first RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Car checkers of the season. Gary Saathoff took the lead on lap four and sped to his first local NAPA IMCA Northern SportMod feature win of the season. Chad Fegley raced from the sixth row to win the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature for the third straight week.

Fisk is first to Crystal checkers

CRYSTAL, Mich. (Aug. 8) – Shannon Fisk was first across the finish line in Saturday’s Allstar Performance IMCA Modified main event at Crystal Motor Speedway. Cliff Denman took the lead over Fisk, Jeff Kohn and Brady Hollenbeck, but Hollenbeck got sideways in turn one and two collecting several cars and forcing him to retire for the night. Fisk got under Denman coming out of turn two to take the lead and eventually the win over Chad Wernette and Kohn.
