Maine is the main man in Raceway Park Sport Compacts

By Bob Coney JEFFERSON, S.D. (June 26) – Raceway Park hit the halfway point of its 2016 IMCA racing season with the KPTH Fox 44 mid-season championships Sunday night. The KISS 107 FM IMCA Sport Compact division saw a tangle at the initial start that took point leader Ramsey Meyer out of contention for the remainder of the evening. On the restart, Lewis Maine took control of the lead from his front row starting spot and held off a challenge from Luke Jackson with two laps remaining to take his first feature win. Behind Maine and Jackson, Andrew Harris and Tracy Raml rounded out the top four. The CarQuest IMCA Hobby Stock division also saw a first-time winner when Steven Pierce made perseverance pay by holding off most of the field from his front row starting position. Medlock, Blurton sprint to URSS wins at Byers

BYERS, Colo. (June 25) – Justin Medlock and Zach Blurton were feature winners when the United Rebel Sprint Series rolled back through the pit gates at Colorado Motor Sports Park Saturday night. Medlock scored the first victory of his career in the feature rained out and made up from May 28 at Byers. Blurton then paced the scheduled event. Medlock led every lap of the rescheduled contest after starting outside the front row. Austin Mclean took the runner-up position back from Bob Schaeffer on lap 15; Scott Cochran and Tod Plemons completed the top five. Blurton wired the field in the scheduled 20-lapper that followed, becoming the fourth different winner in as many URSS events at Byers this season. Lap 12 saw second running Coby Pearce go off track, giving the runner-up spot to Mclean. Mayden returns to Cottage Grove winner’s circle

(June 25) – Jake Mayden returned to the winner’s circle at Cottage Grove Speedway, following the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds’ turn on the track during Loggers’ Cup Night. Justin Austin, Ryan Baker and then Tyler Smith were early leaders. Smith remained in the top spot before slipping back to second on the eighth lap. The driver to take the reigns over the rest of the field was Mayden. He battled for several laps with Smith but in the end Mayden would keep everyone behind him to finish first. It was his second local win of the season. Smith finished in second while Steven Sturdevant, Braedon Hand and B.J. Wild completed the top five. Collen Winebarger was fast time of the night as well as the victor in the trophy dash.

Olmstead holds off Lexington challengers

By Kelly Ninas LEXINGTON, Neb. (June 26) – Racing action was fast-paced with multiple grooves being used at Lexington Raceway Sunday evening. Piloting their racers to the winner’s circle were Colton Osborn, Denny Egge, Mike Nichols and Jacob Olmstead. There was a neck-and-neck battle over the final laps between Jacob Wolsleben and Olmstead. Heavy contact between the duo during the white flag lap brought out the caution and resulted in a dash for the feature win and Wolsleben was forced to change a flat tire to rejoin the field. Olmstead grabbed the lead on the 10th lap restart and held off all challengers for the win. Brady Weinman worked his way into second while Luke Wassom rallied for third. Competition was fierce for the lead position for much of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature with the lead being exchanged five times. Larson teaches high side clinic in Shawano’s Fury at the Fairgrounds

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (June 26) – Jeff Larson was the first car to hit the track for hot laps Saturday at Shawano Speedway and it paid dividends for the Illinois racer. Larson won the third leg of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified Cheesehead Triple Crown and left the track with $5,000, a huge trophy thanks to the Kim Parsons Memorial Trophy Tour and a spot on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Larson and Jerry Wilinski raced wheel-to-wheel following the initial green with Wilinski holding the slightest of leads. Wilinski continued to lead as Larson ran right near the wall trying to gain an advantage. What would be the final caution of the 30-lap feature flew after lap five. As the race went back to green, Larson again tiptoed along the wall and took the lead from Wilinski. Kirchoff masters traffic in Interstate Challenge Series opener

By Dru Brown BILLINGS, Mont. (June 25) – Eddie Kirchoff’s mastery of lapped traffic helped make him the opening night winner in the Interstate Challenge Series. Kirchoff outran Tripp Gaylord and Kenny Baumann Saturday at Billings Motorsports Park, earning $1,000 for his Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory. The evening’s 25-lapper featured some of the best Modified drivers in the Larry Shaw Racing Western Region and right as the green flag came out, the race for the lead was three wide. Kirchoff took the point on the low line. Baumann wanted none of that, however, fought back on the high line and took the lead. The game of leapfrog had begun as Kirchoff stayed steady on the bottom, looked low and stole the lead back. Gaylord, meanwhile, was running third and catching up to the two frontrunners. Kirchoff began building a sizeable lead. Gaylord and Baumann swapped the second spot back and forth, but Gaylord proved to be too strong and took the runner up position. Huettl holds off Modified field at Jamestown

The Minot driver took over the top spot of the 20-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature on lap two after starting on the outside pole. Huettl then glued his no. 4 machine to the cushion near the top of the racing surface and never looked back. It was back-to-back wins for Huettl. He was coming off Thursday’s Topless Night victory at Nodak Speedway in Minot. “We kind of got tangled up on the start a little bit. Toyne picks up first Stock Car win at Cotton Bowl

Hallas PAIGE, Texas (June 25) – Duane Toyne, who has raced in Kansas and Texas and on both asphalt and dirt, scored his first-ever IMCA Stock Car victory against a stout field Saturday at Cotton Bowl Speedway. Toyne started outside row two but lost ground on the start. He methodically worked his way back to the front, catching early leader Joe O’Bryan in the final laps. Toyne got inside O’Bryan, with the two side-by-side, before Toyne inched ahead. O’Bryan tried to crossover on the final lap, but it was Toyne taking the checkers. “This car was one I picked that was built in Nebraska. I don’t know much of the history on it. It’s a fairly older car, built in ’09, but it’s had all the updates on it and drove like a dream tonight,” he said. “The motor is from Kansas, also. Natural Bridge win is Virginia Sprint Series first for Leraas

NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (June 25) – It really paid to have the number seven on your IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car as Mike Leraas in his 77 and Troy Severin in his 7 had the Virginia Sprint Series field covered Saturday at Natural Bridge Speedway. The win was the series first for Leraas, who was chased to the checkers by Severin. Leraas and Tony Harris led the field to green with Harris out first and Leraas right behind. Harris led until lap four when Leraas moved by and went to the high side The leader was really making time, leaving Harris to fight with Severin for the runner-up spot. Severin finally got by on lap eight and went after Harris. They pulled away as Tom Humphries made his way to third. Humphries tried to get by Severin a couple times but the number seven cars were good up high and they both stayed smooth and fast all the way to the checkered flag. Green, white, checkered effective at Off Road

(June 25) – Strangely, three of four featured IMCA races became two-lap winner-take-all competitions Saturday night at the Off Road Speedway. Only the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock division was able to race caution-free. However, the Mach-1 Sport Compacts, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods all became sprints to the finish with all-or-nothing strategy required to cross the finish line first. The Hobby Stock feature, won by Tiffany Bittner, with Mark Arduser and Jeremy Hoskinson finishing second and third, respectively, also provided evidence of track conditions that allowed drivers to venture almost anywhere effectively, with several racers taking their cars high and near the wall entering into a curve then gaining momentum by coming back down into the low part of the track to slingshot past cars, an approach that extended into the feature races which followed.
