New winners in week two at Riviera Raceway

(May 3) – Four different drivers made it to victory lane at Riviera Raceway in week two … in fact, none of the four had been in the top three the week before. Ramsey Meyer of Pierce won the feature for the Mach-1 Sport Compacts, while three Norfolk drivers took home trophies in the other divisions, including Jim Kimmel in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks race, Nelson Vollbrecht in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod, and Robert Osborne in Grand Nationals. For Meyer, last year’s national champion, this season’s first win at Riviera is his sixth first-place finish so far in 2014, well ahead of last season’s pace when, at this same time, he had no wins. “We’ve won races in three different states so far,” Meyer said. “We won specials in Kansas and South Dakota. Lawson hauls home Sprint series checkers from Shenandoah

(May 3) – Long haul trucker Brian Lawson knows about hauling fast freight and showing up on time and Saturday night he showed up at the finish line on time and first in the Virginia Sprint Series feature at Shenandoah Speedway. The third different winner in as many IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour events this season, Lawson led the last 10 circuits. Charlie Ware and Chris Ware brought the field to green and Chris Ware led the first lap before Anthony Linkenhoker took over and began making good time. Laps on the pavement clicked off quickly. Tony Harris broke a logjam at the front and got by for the lead. Lawson was right there with them, got around Linkenhoker a couple laps later and was challenging the leader right away. White, Gustin get first Independence Motor Speedway wins

By Ryan Clark INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (May 3) – Matt White made his first career visit to Independence Motor Speedway a memorable one as the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock driver used a late race pass to drive to victory Saturday night. White rolled off 10th on the starting grid and worked his way through the field while pole-sitter Brian Happel held the lead. Happel was pestered by Jamie Whitaker and Jacob Keiser as White made his way into the top six before the race’s first caution on lap 10. White powered into the runner-up spot one lap after racing resumed and just before the final caution on the 11th circuit of the 15-lapper. White took two laps following that restart to work past Happel on his way to the win. Happel ran second ahead of teammate Chad Albert. Jenae Gustin also earned her first Independence win, that coming in the 15-lap Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature. Waterman, Oliver, Anders get first 34 Raceway wins of season

By Dana Royer WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (May 3) – A trio of IMCA drivers got their first wins of the 2014 season at 34 Raceway Saturday. Jeff Waterman topped the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, John Oliver Jr. was first in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars main and Bobby Anders ruled the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Waterman took the lead from the front row and pulled away from the rest of the Modified field. Tyler Glass got the best of Mitch Morris in the battle for second. Oliver led the last nine circuits of the Stock Car feature. Shane Watts ran in front for eight laps and ended in second. After holding off Tony Dunker much of the distance, Anders took the SportMod checkers ahead of Ryan Fullenkamp. Other winners were Jayson Ditsworth in the 305 sprints, Austen Becerra in the 4-cylinders and Justin Buchholz in the mod lites. A nice field of 112 cars checked in for the night’s racing action, topping last week’s 100 car count.

Wet track conditions KO Marshalltown

Luxemburg Speedway postpones season opener

(May 2) – Gene Mathu, promoter of Luxemburg Speedway, has pulled the pin on the opening night race program. “With the amount of rain we have received at the track we have decided we will not put the track or drivers at risk,” he said. “The races were supposed to kick off a much anticipated 2014 season. We wanted to make this thing a go tonight but with the cold and rainy conditions we feel it’s best for everyone especially our dedicated fans.” May 9 will now kickoff the 2014 season at Luxemburg. Drivers in all five divisions head into opening night with their eyes on the championship prize. We will also have the second annual plywood races to end the show. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m. Billy’s on Main will sponsor the night’s festivities.

Davenport Speedway cancels May 2 races

DAVENPORT, Iowa – A week’s worth of rain has forced the Davenport Speedway to cancel the racing program scheduled for tonight Friday, May 2. Weather permitting, racing will return to the Davenport Speedway next Friday, May 9. On the program along with Milan Heating & Air IMCA Modifieds, Hawkeye Auto IMCA Northern SportMods, Koehler Electric Street Stocks and Roto-Rooter 4-Stocks will be the first-ever appearance of the Lucas Oil MLRA super late models on the 1/4-mile oval. Davenport Speedway is located at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds on West Locust Street in Davenport. Pit gates open next Friday at 4:30 p.m., the grandstand opens at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m.

Thunderhill Raceway cancels May 3 opener

By Edward Anschutz STURGEON BAY, Wis. – Due to extremely wet conditions Prestige Yacht Coatings Thunderhill Raceway has cancelled its opener that was scheduled for this Saturday, May 3. With rain all week and cool temperatures, the racing surface is simply too soft. “As I’ve stated from the beginning, we will look out for the drivers and their race cars. The best way to do so early on is with a smooth racing surface,” said track promoter Woody Wodack. “We are crossing our fingers in hopes that Mother Nature plays nice and we can get the season rolling next weekend.” Mother’s Day weekend will play host to the rescheduled season opener on Saturday, May 10 and will be sponsored by Maas Floral, Woody’s Signs and WDOR. Nielsen takes home Hobby Stock hardware at Hancock County

By Greg Grabianowski BRITT, Iowa (April 25) – Brandon Nielsen raced from 10th starting to win Friday’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature at Hancock County Speedway. Runner-up Weston Koop raced from 12th starting and Wes Jahnz ended in third. John Logue topped the 22-car IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified field. Jerry Wren and Jeremy Mills completed the top three. Heath Tulp held Kevin Opheim in check to take the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car victory. Derek Green was third. Aaron Benson prevailed in a field of 28 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Jared Boumeester, Nick Meyer and 16th starting Greg Sidles completed the top four. For the third straight week, Ryan Bryant was the winner of the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature after starting from the inside on row four. Jacob Kofoot was the runner-up with Ken Winkowitsch third. One hundred and three cars were in the pits at Britt.
