Wilson sweeps Snowbird Classic IMCA features at Arizona Speedway

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (Jan. 18-19) – North Dakota visitor Spencer Wilson had more than the track conditions and the competition to rave about following Arizona Speedway’s Snowbird Classic. Wilson led all 25 laps Saturday and again Sunday night to sweep $1,250 and $1,400 to win main events for the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds. Both features were 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifiers. “I have to tip my hat to them, those guys did an excellent job prepping the track from top to bottom. The track was racy all over,” said Wilson, getting some early-season starts in while avoiding the brutal winter weather back home. “The surface was smoother than a paved road.” “There was a lot of pretty close racing and the guys were respectful of other guys’ equipment,” he added. “I love that. Third tour win of season gives Wilmot first World Products Empire State Series crown

KIRKWOOD, N.Y. (Nov. 9) – Mike Wilmot clinched his career first World Products Empire State Series title with his third tour win of the season Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway. After avoiding early race collisions that slowed the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified finale, Wilmot raced from eighth to third before getting caught up by a spun car. He restarted at the rear, used the high side of the oval to make his way back toward the front and was running side-by-side with Gary Roberts for the lead by the 15th of 25 circuits. Finally pulling ahead, Wilmot beat Roberts to the $600 checkers by less than a car length. Matt Cole, Kevin Cole and Matt Jones rounded out the top five. Dirt Works Eastern Region champion and former tour titleist Chris Fleming had the best shot mathematically at displacing Wilmot atop the standings but was slowed twice by trips to the pit to fix flat tires. Thornell paces Pahrump’s Day After The Duel

PAHRUMP, Nev. (Nov. 10) – Randy Thornell enjoyed two long runs at the front of the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified field before departing from Pahrump Valley Speedway with a $1,500 paycheck. Thornell led 15 laps before midway of Sunday’s Day After The Duel special before bobbling after a restart and watching Kyle Brown drive by. He stayed close and returned the favor just five circuits later, however, leading to the finish and racing his way onto the ballot for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Thornell’s car, engine and even his trailer are homebuilt. He’s pared back his own racing schedule this season while traveling the go-cart circuit with son Blake. “We won the first night out when this car was new in 2010,” he said. “We experimented more with setup this year and got faster as the season came to an end. Payne, Ursetta, Frye are night two winners at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Nov. 8) – Jeremy Payne and Dominic Ursetta were IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified winners during a record-breaking Duel In The Desert program Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The three-time and defending Duel winner, Payne paced the first of two qualifying features on the LVMS half-mile Dirt Track while Ursetta topped the second race. Tyler Frye scored the IMCA SportMod checkers. Both Modified features paid $777 to win, the SportMod feature $500. An event record 320 entries, including 247 Modifieds and 73 SportMods, have now competed at the 16th annual event. The top four finishers from each Modified qualifier advance to the outside row of Saturday’s $7,777 to win main event. Dustin Boney, Travis Sherfick and Zane DeVilbiss followed Payne across the stripe. Benji LaCrosse, Paul Stone and Tim Ward completed the top four behind Ursetta. Van Genderen takes Desert Classic title

By Lonnie Wheatley PEORIA, Ariz. (Nov. 1-2) – After making his first visit to Canyon Speedway Park, Mike Van Genderen is probably already looking forward to his second. Van Genderen made the most of the 1,500 mile trek from Newton, Iowa, by taking the $5,000 winner’s share in Saturday night’s 40-lap IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event that put the wraps on Canyon’s 25th annual Desert Classic special. The payday was Van Genderen’s biggest in the open-wheeled division and put him on the ballot for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. He raced from his front row outside starting position and led every circuit before taking the checkered flag. Cautions slowed the early going but the last half of the feature stayed green. Van Genderen used the top line and led by a straightaway much of the distance before getting slowed by heavy lapped traffic in the late going. Allen proves up to Challenge at Abilene

By Neal Palmer ABILENE, Texas (Oct. 17-19) – Chase Allen proved this weekend he can not only build race cars, he can drive them, too. Allen won Saturday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event at Abilene Speedway’s Ryan Bard Memorial Southern Challenge. He took off from the pole, was fast right out of the gate and earned $3,000, plus a spot on the ballot for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. National champion William Gould started outside the front row and looked to have one of the cars that might have something for Allen. Before halfway, the front pair had pulled away from the rest of the field by a straightway. Gould kept the pressure on Allen while Jerry Harpole, Chris Elliott, Josh McGaha and Keith White battled well behind them. Elliott worked hard trying to get under Harpole, then decided to try the outside. He shot into third as they hit the front stretch. Chassis decision pays off again for Melton

By Neal Palmer BOYD, Texas (Oct. 12) – Chad Melton decision to change chassis paid off again Saturday at Boyd Raceway. Melton won another October special, pocketing $2,000 for winning the Grand Nationals main event for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds in his new CAM Chassis. The new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier picked the line he liked and set sail, leading the entire 25-lap feature distance. Glen Hibbard, Tommy Fain, Darryl Campbell and Charles Brewer rounded out the top five. 2013 track champions Dean Abbey and Gabe Tucker defender their Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod and IMCA Sunoco Stock Car turf, respectively. Abbey had to pass Chris Cogburn and then Brad Shirley for the lead. He was working his way through lapped traffic on the final circuit when something let go in the motor, but he was able to keep the pedal to the metal long enough to get to victory lane. Hansen completes Fall Nationals mission at RPM with $5,000 IMCA Modified payday

(Oct. 10-12) – John Hansen earned the biggest share of the weekend’s $60,000-plus purse when more than 230 race teams, representing 11 states and Canada, converged on RPM Speedway for the seventh annual Fall Nationals Oct. 10-12. Pole starter Hansen was a man on a mission in Saturday’s 40-lap IMCA Xtreme Modified feature, which included four former national champions in the star-studded lineup. Scott Drake and Dominic Ursetta swapped the lead early. Hansen took the lead on lap 14 and never looked back as he lapped half of the 24-car field en route to the win and a $5,000 check. The new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier was followed by Ursetta, Eddie Belec, Drake and Jeremy Frenier. Mike Nichols led all 30 laps of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature to capture a $3,000 paycheck. Gould gets biggest share of Modified green at Showdown

The new IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified national champion took the $2,500 checkers in Sunday’s rescheduled Showdown at Kennedale Speedway Park. The victory put Gould on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. After qualifying Friday evening with a runner-up finish behind Glen Hibbard, Gould wasted no time getting around pole starter Chase Allen on the backstretch and was in the lead when every lap after that was scored. Hibbard started inside row two, was quickly up to second and pressured Gould lap after lap, briefly gaining the lead on lap three and pulling alongside on lap nine. Two circuits later, Hibbard was blocked by a lapped car and was never able to get back up to Gould and make a run for the lead. Gould edges Sobbing in race for national IMCA Modified crown

VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 8) – William Gould has won a lot of close races in his IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified career, but few were as close as the one that made him a national champion. The Calera, Okla., veteran edged rookie Jesse Sobbing of Glenwood, Iowa, by a razor-thin 1,233-1,232 margin to win the national IMCA Modified crown. Gould was a 25-time feature winner this season, taking 24 of those checkers in his home BillsBuilt South Central Region. IMCA’s first national champion from the Sooner State, he got the maximum possible 40 bonus points for winning the track title at Kennedale Speedway Park and the Texas Lone Star Series. Sobbing collected 32 wins in all, with 24 of them coming in the Belleville Motorsports North Central Region.
