Worthington Speedway welcomes back five IMCA divisions

WORTHINGTON, Minn. – The loyal contingent of IMCA drivers locally and from across a three-state area have a new Saturday venue in Worthington Speedway this season. Five sanctioned divisions fill 14 weekly race programs beginning May 22, with the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season continuing through Aug. 28. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts all return to the quarter-mile black dirt oval, located in the southwest corner of Minnesota. Drivers from Iowa and South Dakota will vie with home state competitors at Worthington. “Most of the local drivers are IMCA and a lot of the other drivers in the area run IMCA,” Fair Board President Corey Gronewold said in explaining the switch in weekly sanctions from USRA back to IMCA. “We chose to go with IMCA in all five classes because we have drivers in those divisions in this immediate area and didn’t want to leave anyone out.”  While no specials are yet on the schedule, track officials are working with [Read More]

Cleveland rocks with new IMCA STARS Mod Lite sanction at 105

CLEVELAND, Texas – After a sprint by the new promotional team to get the track race-ready, IMCA STARS Mod Lites became the newest addition to Saturday race programs at 105 Motor Speedway. Chris Brown and Cleveland Motor Sports Group partners Joey Smith and Jesse McMorton, acquaintances who “morphed into a pretty good friendship,” took over the track, located north of Houston, less than two months ago. “It’s been an all-out sprint to get day-to-day stuff ready since then,” said Brown. “The division had already run here for a lot of years and the Mod Lite drivers came to us and asked about sanctioning with IMCA.”  “In this area, there have been so many rule changes in different divisions. I’ve raced for more than 20 years and I know how hard it is as a driver not knowing if your car was going to be legal the next year,” he continued. “When you run IMCA, you know the rules are pretty much going to stay the same every year. The consistency is really big. When you [Read More]

I thought that is where we had to be,” Harris said of his early laps in the 25-lap race. “I ran a couple of laps down there then we went to the top.” That is when Harris started to advance. After a lap 12 restart, Harris drove around veteran Danny Wood for second and chased after Tyre. Boone County to remember Tanner Pelster at fair special

ALBION, Neb. – A life well lived that ended too soon will be celebrated at the biggest event in Boone County Raceway history. Just 24, the fourth generation driver from Albion died as a result of a work accident early last month. The son of Boone County promoter Delmer Pelster and wife Dee grew up with four older sisters and at a race track just a few blocks from home. “We were proud of Tanner. He was special, and a lot of people thought that way,” his father said. “He could make anybody smile. Tanner had friends all over the place.” This would have been Tanner’s ninth season in IMCA. DOE RUN, Mo. – IMCA STARS Mod Lites are new to Friday night race programs this season at small but lightning quick Doe Run Raceway. The 1/6-mile, high-banked clay oval some 70 miles south of downtown St. Louis opens with the April 2-3 Small Tire Shootout. The IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season continues through Sept. 24. “These cars are fast and the fans love ‘em. They’re like Modifieds on a smaller scale and they put on a great show,” promoter Tommy Harris said. “The drivers are a great bunch. They came to me and asked to sanction. They can run here for national and state points, and have the extra insurance that comes with IMCA membership.”  Built in the mid-1990s, Mod Lites ran their first full season at Doe Run after Harris purchased, then re-opened the track last year.  Berms were taken out and 30 loads of clay added to the racing surface last fall. Brown wheels borrowed car to big IMCA Hobby Stock payday

SOMERTON, Ariz. – Expectations were more than exceeded when Brian Brown made his first-ever IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock start March 6 at Cocopah Speedway.  With a $1,600 check on the line, Brown proved to be a fast learner in the full-bodied class, getting a break from a timely yellow and parking friend and fellow Ramona, Calif., resident Brian Fitzgibbons’ car in victory lane.  Fitzgibbons, off the track while undergoing chemotherapy, had suggested Brown try his luck in the 2020 Charger Chassis wheeled last season by former national champion Jeff Ware.  Friends and sponsors had helped Fitzgibbon’s wife Amanda buy the car with the ultimate goal of getting him racing again. It was parked in their garage before Brown put the final race-ready touches on at his house and booked hotel rooms for the trip to Cocopah.  “Our fathers were best friends in high school and we live like 20 houses away,” said Brown, who also races a Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod. “We’d seen the to-win (amount at Cocopah) bumping up and were sitting around and [Read More]
