By popular request, Missouri’s Doe Run to add IMCA STARS Mod Lites on Fridays

DOE RUN, Mo. – IMCA STARS Mod Lites are new to Friday night race programs this season at small but lightning quick Doe Run Raceway. The 1/6-mile, high-banked clay oval some 70 miles south of downtown St. Louis opens with the April 2-3 Small Tire Shootout. The IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season continues through Sept. 24. “These cars are fast and the fans love ‘em. They’re like Modifieds on a smaller scale and they put on a great show,” promoter Tommy Harris said. “The drivers are a great bunch. They came to me and asked to sanction. They can run here for national and state points, and have the extra insurance that comes with IMCA membership.”  Built in the mid-1990s, Mod Lites ran their first full season at Doe Run after Harris purchased, then re-opened the track last year.  Berms were taken out and 30 loads of clay added to the racing surface last fall. Final touches on a new concession stand and restroom facilities are being made before the season-opening special. Night [Read More]

Brown wheels borrowed car to big IMCA Hobby Stock payday

SOMERTON, Ariz. – Expectations were more than exceeded when Brian Brown made his first-ever IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock start March 6 at Cocopah Speedway.  With a $1,600 check on the line, Brown proved to be a fast learner in the full-bodied class, getting a break from a timely yellow and parking friend and fellow Ramona, Calif., resident Brian Fitzgibbons’ car in victory lane.  Fitzgibbons, off the track while undergoing chemotherapy, had suggested Brown try his luck in the 2020 Charger Chassis wheeled last season by former national champion Jeff Ware.  Friends and sponsors had helped Fitzgibbon’s wife Amanda buy the car with the ultimate goal of getting him racing again. It was parked in their garage before Brown put the final race-ready touches on at his house and booked hotel rooms for the trip to Cocopah.  “Our fathers were best friends in high school and we live like 20 houses away,” said Brown, who also races a Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod. “We’d seen the to-win (amount at Cocopah) bumping up and were sitting around and [Read More]

MANDAN, N.D. – The IMCA Dakota Classic Modified Tour has new title sponsorship from long-standing tour supporter Corral Sales of Mandan. The Mandan-based business has been open since 1968 and specializes in recreational vehicles, parts and service. “The tour wishes to thank Bob Kupper for his long-time title sponsorship of the series. 81 Speedway building toward future with IMCA STARS Mod Lite sanction

PARK CITY, Kan. – 81 Speedway builds toward the future with IMCA STARS Mod Lites added to select Saturday race programs in 2021. Ten race dates have been announced for this season at the 3/8-mile dirt oval in Park City, a suburb of Wichita, with opening night on April 17. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing shows to follow are April 24, May 8, June 12, June 26, July 10, July 24, July 31, Aug. 21 and Sept. 11. “We ran this class non-sanctioned last year. I think the IMCA sanction will make the program stronger, give it structure and allow our drivers to race for national and state points,” promoter John Allen said. “We’re working with other tracks in scheduling races. That’s going to benefit all our drivers.” Response from Mod Lite drivers to the sanctioning announcement has been understandably positive.  “They’re excited. I think they’ve been looking forward to something like this,” said Allen. “There have been other guys thinking about building cars but were waiting until they found out something for sure. By John Rittenoure  MEEKER, Okla. Kent is super in Oil Capital RaceSaver series opener

By John Rittenoure MEEKER, Okla. (March 6) – Johnny Kent gave up the early lead then regained it just in time to win the 2021 AmeriFlex/Oil Capital Racing Series season opener for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars during night one of the Red Dirt Raceway Spring Nationals.  For the first time, the series raced under the IMCA RaceSaver sanction and a total of 42 competitors turned out for the inaugural outing.  Kent picked up his third OCRS career victory, but it almost did not happen.  Starting outside front row next to Dillon Laden, Kent jumped into the lap one lead on the Red Dirt quarter-mile before the yellow flag waved.  On the restart, fourth starting Casey Wills roared past Kent for the lead. Kent kept pace with Wills throughout the 25-lapper hoping for a second chance. Opportunity presented itself in the final two laps and Kent went around Wills for the victory.  Tyler Drueke, making his first start with OCRS, charged from eighth to finish third. Ty Williams was fourth and veteran Danny Wood came from [Read More]

HAYS, Kan. – A race fan forever, Chris Sutton takes a new job at a long-time IMCA Kansas race track this season. It’s a very big piece of the IMCA racing puzzle in the state and consistently has had one of the biggest car counts in Kansas,” said Sutton. “There’s not a lot of maintenance that needs to be done before opening night. KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Lakeside Speedway’s 67th anniversary season will be its first with Mod Lites running under the IMCA STARS sanction. The class has raced at the big 4/10-mile oval, on the northwest side of Kansas City, since 2016 with a STARS national event held there last fall.  Half a dozen Friday night dates for IMCA STARS Mod Lites are scheduled this year, on April 16, April 30, May 21, Aug. 6, Sept. 3 and Sept. 10. “They’re a fun class. Mod Lites are fun to watch,” said promoter Pete Howey. “One of the things I like about this class is that the drivers are so respectful of each other. They all pit together and if somebody needs something, there’s always another driver who will loan it to them. I love that.” Many of the Lakeside competitors will be regulars at another newly sanctioned and nearby venue, Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo. “We’re a bigger track but we’ll be a nice complement in the Kansas City market,” explained Howey. “Drivers who race on Saturdays [Read More]
