Marriott, Thornton are fastest on opening weekend of Winter Nationals

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Feb. 5-6) – Hunter Marriott and Ricky Thornton Jr. both continued their early season Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified success with $1,000 feature wins on the opening weekend of Winter Nationals at Cocopah Speedway. Marriott topped Friday’s main event after starting third; Lance Mari, Justin Zeitner, Ethan Dotson and David Murray Jr. rounded out the top five. Thornton raced from sixth in winning ahead of Dotson, Zeitner, Paul Stone and Dylan Smith on Saturday. More than 60 Modifieds from 15 states and Canada saw action at Cocopah and total car counts topped 100 both nights. Marriott and Thornton were already on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. They’d combined to dominate the January Winter Challenge at Canyon Speedway Park with Thornton picking up three wins and Marriott winning the other two events. Coleman Racing Products gives awards to drivers in all five IMCA Modified regions

MENOMINEE, Mich. – Coleman Racing Products begins its second decade of IMCA sponsorship by giving product certificate awards in all five Modified regions. Title sponsor EMI gives big financial boost to growing IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car division

LINCOLN, Neb. – Division title sponsor EMI provides a portion of the point fund to be paid out to top 10 drivers in national IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car point standings for a fourth consecutive season. Lone Star’s Smackdown boasts IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars

KILGORE, Texas – The top check for IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Cars is $1,200 at Lone Star Speedway’s Saturday, Feb. 13 Sprint Smackdown. A minimum of $300 will be paid to start the main event. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing national and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded. There is no entry or registration fee. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors 65 and over and military personnel, $5 for kids ages 6-11, and free for five and under. Pit passes are $35. Marriott headlines Winter Challenge finale

(Jan. 30) – Hunter Marriott brought the curtains down on Canyon Speedway Park’s Winter Challenge with an impressive drive to victory lane in Saturday night’s fifth and final event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. Marriott worked past Ryan Gaylord for the lead five laps into the $1,250 to win main event and then fought off Ricky Thornton Jr. the rest of the way to take his second Winter Challenge victory. “It has been fun racing with Ricky out here,” Marriott commented in victory lane. “He pushes us so hard here, if it weren’t for him I don’t that we would have to work as hard as we have this week.” Marriott made a masterful move through a gaggle of lapped cars a handful of laps before the checkered flag to secure the win with Thornton settling for second. (Jan. 29) – Ricky Thornton Jr. maintained the hottest of Winter Challenge 2016 hands on Friday night, posting his third $1,250 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified triumph in four rounds of competition atop the 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval. Racing from the front row, Thornton set the pace all the way for the second race in a row. Round Two winner Hunter Marriott tried to chase down Thornton to match up the score at two apiece but had to settle for second. YORK, Pa. – Roger Hadan, the new owner of RaceSaver and promoter at Eagle, Neb., Raceway and IMCA Vice President of Operations Jim Stannard will attend the upcoming Racing Xtravaganza at the Expo Center in York, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 6.
