Car count record reaches 876 at Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 11) – One more Modified, one more Stock Car and 33 Late Models resulted in a new car count record for the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. By the time the final checkered flag flew early this morning, an all-time record 876 cars had competed at America’s Racin’ Vacation, two more than the previous mark set in 2012. The additional Modified entered on Thursday at Boone Speedway nudged that division total to 278. The additional Stock Car put that class at 193 entries, two more than the previous best, which also dates from three years ago. The 33 Late Models were in town for the Deery Brothers Summer Series. Other division totals were 167 Northern SportMods, 141 Hobby Stocks and a record 64 Sport Compacts, up one from 2013. This is the eighth straight year 800 or more cars have converged on Boone for Super Nationals. * Qualifying heats for the Sunoco Race Fuels Race of Champions for Stock Cars and the Harris Auto Racing Race of Champions for Modifieds [Read More]

Strickler, Grabouski top Thursday Modified qualifying features

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 10) – Kyle Strickler will chase for a second IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s Modified title while Jordan Grabouski runs for his first on Saturday. Both won Thursday night qualifying features at Boone Speedway that sent top four finishers to the middle row of the main event. Strickler, the defending champion, reined in 10th starting Wade Cross for the lead following a series of mid-race restarts in the opener, then ran away from everybody. Cross ended in second while rookie Brian Irvine, twice a Super Nationals Stock Car champ, rocketed from 18th to third. J.D. Auringer held onto fourth. Grabouski drew the pole start and led all 25 laps of the nightcap, teaching a seminar on passing after getting into traffic just before the only caution, on the 14th circuit. Aaron Turnbull chased Grabouski the last 24 times around the track and 2012 champion Jeff Taylor took third. William Gould maintained a tenuous hold on fourth the last half of the contest. Tulp, Panos pace Thursday Stock Car qualifiers

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 10) – Qualifying feature checkers flew Thursday night for IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s Stock Car winners Heath Tulp and Lynn Panos. Both bested 25-lappers at Boone Speedway with solid runs to the finish. Top four finishers from both events advance to Saturday’s main event at Boone Speedway. Tulp drew the pole for the first qualifier and outran 2013 champion Brandon Czarapata, Dalton Flory and Lance Deal. Panos worked his way into the lead from fifth. His win came ahead of Chad Sterling, Josh Daniels and Wayne Gifford. A Friday Rochambeau session decides the starting order in the middle row, with Tulp and Panos squaring off to decide the front spot. Czarapata will make his career 11th and seventh consecutive main event start. Tulp, Panos and Gifford are all in for the third time, Daniels for the second and Flory, Deal and Sterling each for the first. 1st qualifying feature results – 1. Heath Tulp, Britt; 2. Aikey delivers on promise of fifth Super Nationals championship

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 10) – After winning a second straight and fourth career IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s title last September, Jeff Aikey promised to return to Boone Speedway and add to his Late Model championship collection. He made good on that promise Thursday night in an epic Deery Brothers Summer Series battle with Justin Kay and Richie Gustin, two other drivers who came into the night looking to race their way into the record book. Aikey becomes the third driver to win five career Super Nationals crowns and the first to win three in a row. “After we came here on Memorial Day, I told my crew we had to make the car faster. We had a fast car tonight, let me tell you,” said Aikey, who’d qualified through his ‘B’ feature and started 15th. “I’ll be back next year to make it four in a row.” The victory, Aikey’s series career 65th, paid $3,510. That amount includes a $510 Speedway Motors Weekly Racing bonus. Kay was second by not much [Read More]

Starting from the pole

The car that will be starting from the pole in the Super Nationals Modified main event has an interesting lineage: It’s a 2008 GRT Mike Hagen bought beat up for all of $4,000 from Ed Turnbull. “I was second at Williston in points. The car ran good all year,” said Hagen, whose Wednesday qualifying feature win was his IMCA first this season. “I went out (in the qualifier) and tried to hit my marks all night and it went good.” He’s raced for 30 years, 27 of them in a Modified. Hagen will make his first-ever main event start on Saturday in front of a Boone Speedway crowd with plenty of fans cheering on their favorites from North Dakota and Canada. Hagen also races at Minot and Estevan and credits his local track competition with helping him prep for Boone. “I race with a lot of tough guys,” he said, before signing an autograph in the Fan Zone. “It’s hard to get a lot of wins racing against them.” * Mike Nichols proved to be [Read More]

Scholpp beats the odds and returns to racing

BOONE, Iowa – Fifty-odd phone call calls and 20 or so texts followed Kody Scholpp’s run to the checkers in Wednesday night’s first Modified qualifying feature at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. The Estevan, Sask., driver earned his career second berth in the Saturday night main event at Boone Speedway. He’d been the first Canadian to qualify for the Modified show and finished seventh in 2013. “It seems like I ran second forever and my tires went away. I had to work just to hold on to seventh,” said Scholpp, who made sure four new Hoosiers were on the car this time around. “Winning (the qualifier) was awesome. I was smiling every time around the track I was so happy.” His very large racing family was smiling right along with him: Scholpp had sustained injuries including a broken neck and back in a January, 2014 motor vehicle accident and doctors weren’t sure that he’d walk again, let alone survive. He was hospitalized for 42 days, about a third of that time in [Read More]

Fifth Super Nationals trip is Montgomery’s Modified first

Photos taped above a workbench in Jeremy Montgomery’s trailer document highlights of his racing career. He’s hoping to add to that display following his first IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s outing in the Modified division. The Burleson, Texas, driver has made two trips to Boone Speedway to race a Hobby Stock and two more with a Stock Car. He and his dad Eddie changed three tires on the trailer on their trip north but still arrived in Boone with sunny dispositions. “What I want to do here is learn a lot, have a little bit of fun and be competitive,” Montgomery said. He ran third in his Wednesday heat behind heavy hitters Russ Dickerson and J.D. Auringer, then finished 10th in an equally stacked ‘B’ main. “I raced the Prelude on Saturday, broke a tie rod in my heat and didn’t qualify out of my ‘B,’” said Montgomery. “We made a lot of changes in the car on Sunday and I think it’s 100 percent better.” The first win of his rookie season [Read More]
