Simmons is Virginia Sprint winner at Dixieland

By Jim Haines ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Part-time pilot Carl Simmons raced like a pro in winning Friday’s Virginia Sprint Series feature at Dixieland Speedway. The IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour checkers were Simmons’ first in two years and came ahead of Tom Humphries and Jerald Harris. Simmons and Charlie Ware brought the field to green with Simmons wasting no time moving to the cushion. Ware had to hold off the field, which had lined up behind him on the fast, short oval. As the laps clicked off, Harris and Humphries made their way to the front and were working on Simmons. With two to go, Harris was running out of fuel in the corners and Humphries went by on the high side. It was too late to go after Simmons however as he flew under the checkered flag first. Feature results – 1. Carl Simmons; 2. Tom Humphries; 3. Jerald Harris; 4. Troy Severin; 5. Kevin Fletcher; 6. Anthony Linkenhoker; 7. Charlie Ware; 8. J.D. Coats; 9. Cassandra Davis; 10. $3,500 worth of redemption comes for Taylor at Sanders IMCA Mod Challenge

ADA, Minn. (Aug. 13) – Futility was the story of Jeff Taylor’s first visit to Norman County Raceway three years ago. He returned Thursday night to win the Sanders IMCA Modified Challenge special and left Ada with $3,500 worth of redemption. “I really liked being able to redeem myself. The last time I was here, I spun out twice and didn’t even get out of my ‘B’ feature,” Taylor said. “You don’t forget stuff like that.” The $18,700 feature purse lured Taylor and a lot of Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified top guns from the Upper Midwest and Canada to the midweek special. Mike Hansen, Aaron Turnbull, Dustin Strand and Curt Lund completed the top five, finishing well off the pace Taylor set up front. Taylor had started the 30-lap main event from 11th. A caution near midway wiped out Hansen’s big lead and Taylor zoomed from fourth to second following the restart, then passed Hansen on the 17th time around. “I’d been running a little bit of everywhere before staying on a higher line to [Read More]

Deadline is Friday, Aug. 21 to request RaceSaver® rule no. 5 repair authorization

RaceSaver® wants our technical staff to be aware of issues that pertain to engine rule no. 5 and we ask for their help and cooperation in resolving these issues.  5: Only an iron or steel crankshaft, with a minimum weight of 48 lbs. will be permitted, (-1%). The main bearing diameter will be 2.450 (-.030). Weight added to crank except balance metal, which must be welded in place, will not be permitted.  In an effort to identify those non-compliant engines and bring them into compliance, RaceSaver® offered a grace period of 90 days for engines that are identified as possibly containing non-conforming, but legal weight crankshafts. RaceSaver® will issue a repair authorization number to allow steel to be added to the crankshaft to bring it to 48 pounds. In these instances, the 1% tolerance will not be allowed. The crankshaft must be weighed before and after adding the weight. A photo of the completed repair to the crank will be submitted by email with the tech form. TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Colt Mather became the seventh different winner in as many different Hawkeye Dirt Tour events Tuesday night while Kyle Brown became the new point leader with one race left in the series for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. Justin Kay, who would go on to win the Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Model main event later in the program, closed the gap on Mather but finished a car length off the pace. Mather’s win paid $1,000 and put him on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Mitchell Morris, Brad Dierks and Mike Burbridge completed the top five. Brown, meanwhile, was the final qualifier for the main event field. He started 22nd and ended in seventh. Mike Van Genderen led Brown by one point going into the night and finished 12th at Tipton. Kay continues Deery dominance with Cedar County checkers

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Justin Kay nearly had two trophies to show for his Tuesday night efforts at Cedar County Raceway. Kay won his sixth Deery Brothers Summer Series feature of the season, adding to his lead in the IMCA Late Model tour point standings. He’d run second in the Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature for Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds earlier in the evening. Dan Shelliam started outside row two in the 50 lap Deery Series main event and led the first 14 times around the Tipton oval. The third starting Kay drove by the next time around and was not challenged. Restarts at midway and on lap 39 took out lapped traffic and Kay’s margin of victory was most of 10 car lengths. The victory was Kay’s career 15th and paid $3,000. Shelliam matched his career best finish in second – he’d also been runner-up to Kay at Jackson County Speedway on June 9 – and Ray Guss Jr. was third. Kevin Kile was fourth.
