IMCA announces amendment to rules for Northern SportMod rear suspension

VINTON, Iowa (May 4) – IMCA officials have announced an amendment to rules for the rear suspension of Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, which takes effect immediately. Wording has been added to rules posted on the IMCA website allowing the use of solid safety chains securely mounted to the axle housing. Chains cannot be mounted to any floating device. “From our standpoint, allowing this chain gets back to how the division and its rules have evolved over the past 10 years,” said IMCA President Brett Root, citing maximum free standing spring height and the upper spring perch. “Short of us writing more rules, this amendment makes the most sense.” Two factors figured in the decision allowing safety chains. “We were concerned with springs falling out of the back of cars and the amount of excessive force the rear suspension is putting on rear shocks,” Root explained. “It’s our opinion that shocks shouldn’t be used as a limiting device. Schrader, Wallace return for rescheduled IMCA Night specials at Longdale, Outlaw

LONGDALE, Okla. (May 4) – IMCA Night specials at Longdale Speedway tomorrow night and at Outlaw Motor Speedway in Muskogee on Wednesday have been rescheduled for July 28 and 29. NASCAR drivers Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace will still compete both nights. Track officials noted forecasts calling for a 90 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms each of the next two days in announcing the rescheduled dates. Both IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified features pay $1,500 to win and a minimum of $100 to start. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA SportMods race for $1,000 to win and a minimum of $50 to start each night. All applicable points, including local track points, will be awarded in the three IMCA divisions Tuesday and Wednesday, July 28-29. Pit gates and the grandstands open at 5 p.m. both days. Long haul pays off for Northeast Shootout winner Ward

By Jay Fish WEEDSPORT, N.Y. (May 3) – Nine and a half hours, 33 competitors and 35 grueling laps were what it took for Ionia, Mich.’s A.J. Ward to capture $2,500 and some impressive hardware in Weedsport Speedway’s inaugural IMCA Modified Northeast Shootout. “I didn’t come 9-1/2 hours for nothing,” a triumphant Ward declared, celebratory rifle in hand, a gift from Weedsport Speedway management for the Empire State Series event winner. “Stuff happened so fast, they bobbled, I shot the gap and next thing I know, I had the lead,” Ward recounted of his move for the lead with just six laps to go. Dundee, N.Y.’s Rich Karlnoski had led the previous 29 circuits when disaster struck. Karlnoski’s luck and suspension all broke into pieces and he’d have to settle for a 14th place finish. Aikey adds Hershel Roberts Memorial trophy to Deery collection

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (May 3) – The driver with the most feature wins in 28-plus seasons of Deery Brothers Summer Series history now has a trophy from the Hershel Roberts Memorial to add to his collection. Jeff Aikey slipped past defending IMCA Late Model race winner and tour champion Justin Kay on the 14th of 58 laps Sunday at Quad City Speedway. He led the rest of the way in collecting his 64th career Deery victory and a $3,000 payday at the fifth annual event Kay set the fast pace for the first 13th circuits, then chased Aikey in heavy lapped traffic before finishing on his back bumper. Hard charger Matt Ryan raced from 13th starting to third. Ray Guss Jr., who’d driven for Roberts and won the 2011, 2012 and 2013 memorials, was fourth and point leader Andy Nezworski completed the top five. Harris speeds to victory at Natural Bridge

By Jim Haines NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (May 2) – Jerald Harris sped to his first Virginia Sprint Series victory of the season Saturday at Natural Bridge Speedway. Chris Ware and Anthony Linkenhoker paced the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car field to green with Ware out first. Linkenhoker, however, swept around to the top spot the next time around. By lap five, Harris was all over the leader and was in first when the next lap was scored. Linkenhoker and Ware stayed close as laps went by while Tom Humphries was moving up. With five to go, Humphries had made it to second with the front four close and flying high. Lapped traffic was in play on the run to the checkers, slowing Harris and giving Humphries one last shot, but they went under the checkered flag nose to tail with Harris out front. Sunday show at Quad City Speedway next for Deery Series

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (April 28) – Quad City Speedway’s Hershel Roberts Memorial is next on the Deery Brothers Summer Series schedule. The Sunday, May 3 IMCA Late Model tour event at East Moline pays $3,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. This is the fifth annual Roberts Memorial, held in honor of the long-time driver, car owner and Quad City Speedway Hall of Famer. Ray Guss Jr. of Milan drove for Roberts and won the 2011, 2012 and 2013 events. Justin Kay of Wheatland, Iowa, topped the Roberts Memorial last May, earning a victory that helped propel him to the 2014 tour title. In all, 16 previous Deery Series events have been held at Quad City Speedway since 1990. The only other multiple feature winner has been Rob Toland, in 1998 and 2004. GREAT FALLS, Mont. (April 25) – A record number of Modifieds and the division’s first-ever ‘B’ feature at Electric City Speedway drew their share of headlines at Saturday’s Spring Roundup. North Dakota travelers Travis Peery and Jason Wolla ran 1-2 in the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event as long tows complemented a stellar contingent of home state drivers. Twenty-seven Modifieds, the most in the 26 years the division has run at Great Falls, were on hand for the season-opening special. “There have been a lot of Modifieds around us but we were on an island. Sprint Series of Nebraska opener goes to Grossenbacher

By Greg Soukup EAGLE, Neb. (April 24) – The main event distance was just right as far as Trevor Grossenbacher was concerned Friday night at Eagle Raceway. The Sprint Series of Nebraska opener ran green to checkered with Grossenbacher going up in a huge cloud of steam as his radiator hose blew coming out of turn four on the final lap. He limped to the Rumble in The Bullring win with Jake Bubak second, Clint Benson third and Adam Gullion fourth. “I love winning in any kind of car and I plan on being here quite a bit this year. Galbreath storms to Bay Area Modified Tour triumph

MILTON, Fla. (April 25) – Severe storms threatened as Justin Galbreath made like lightning in winning Saturday’s Bay Area Modified Emerald Coast Tour feature at Southern Raceway. Galbreath was on a rail, leading most of the 25-lapper after starting fourth. The IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory was worth $650. Jason Barnhill, Tyler Allen, Brandon Kilpatrick and Scott Sessions completed the top five. Sessions earned $100 for his hard charger efforts from 12th on the original grid. Jessie Barnhill was the $50 hard luck award recipient after losing his second engine in as many races.
