Another milestone as Anderson wins 300th

DES MOINES, Iowa (June 14) – Another win, another milestone. And Shannon Anderson will tell you this one was the most difficult to achieve. Anderson won for the 300th time in his IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock career Wednesday at Southern Iowa Speedway. That’s the most for any driver in division history and the fourth-highest single division total in IMCA’s modern era. “To win Super Nationals or national championships or 100, 200 or 300 features are all really hard. They’re all big accomplishments,” said Anderson. “Three hundred feature wins has been the hardest. I would never have guess I’d get that many. I can still remember when I just wanted to win once.” While perfect this season at the Mahaska County Monster, Anderson was happy to put the milestone win in the rearview mirror. “I was relieved to get it,” he said. “Mike Kincaid was really fast. He’s always really good there and it wasn’t easy for me to get underneath and get the lead.” The six-time national and three-time IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by [Read More]

Skalicky leads every lap of every Northern SportMod Nationals race

By Chad Meyer BRITT, Iowa (June 20) – Jesse Skalicky and his crew had been looking for a special or two that didn’t interfere with their regular Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod weekly racing. After leading every lap of every race he was in at Hancock County Speedway’s Northern SportMod Nationals, Skalicky was looking for a place to put his $2,700 in winnings and a very tall trophy for the six-hour tow home to Fargo, N.D. Skalicky had never raced at Britt before Tuesday night but don’t be surprised to see him return soon. He led every lap of his heat race, drew the pole and repeated that flag-to-flag run in the $200 to win dash, then led every circuit in the $2,500 to win main event. “I have never had a night like this. It’s the biggest win I’ve ever been part of,” said Skalicky, whose previous top payday was $400 and dated to his pure stock days. “We had been looking around for specials and one of my crew guys saw this on Facebook.” [Read More]

Pray prevails at Greased Pig for first IMCA Modified victory

AUBURN, Mich. (June 16) – IMCA Modified career win 1.0 at Tri-City Motor Speedway’s Greased Pig 7.0 special put Chaz Pray on the ballot for Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational 14.0. “I’ve always had it in my mind that when we won, it would be from further back,” Pray said after taking the $1,077 checkers Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway, his home track. “Tri-City is usually very racy and you don’t know where the line is going to be. It was rewarding to run where we wanted to and be able to keep out momentum up.” “It’s a big bonus to be on the Fast Shafts ballot,” the first-time IMCA Modified feature winner added. The six-year IMCA campaigner had started the 41-lapper from outside the front row. While numerous cautions interrupted the event, Pray stayed in charge and ended a couple car lengths faster than big brother Matt Szecsodi. Szecsodi, who also cut his racing teeth in an asphalt modified before switching to dirt, was right behind Pray before a late-race hiccup. Timmy Near started 11th and [Read More]

Deery Series, Arnold Motor Supply Hawkeye Dirt Tour sweep puts Kay in IMCA record book

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (June 13) – Justin Kay’s first trip to victory lane Tuesday night at West Liberty Raceway put $1,000 in his pocket. His second put him in the record book. Already of the winner of the Arnold Motor Supply Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds, Kay became the first driver to win Dirt Tour and Deery Brothers Summer Series main events on the same night when he followed with a convincing run to the $2,000 IMCA Late Model tour checkers. “Winning both races is always the goal. We were really close one night in Tipton (in 2015) when we won the Deery feature and finished second in the Dirt Tour feature,” Kay said. “It’s really cool to be the first driver to win both events on the same night but I don’t think I’ll be the only one who does it.” The Deery win was Kay’s second straight and fourth of the season. Seven of his career 23 tour wins have come at West Liberty. The two-time series champion reeled in current point [Read More]

Kay starts history-making night with win in Arnold Motor Supply Hawkeye Dirt Tour

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (June 13) – A driver best known for his IMCA Late Model prowess continued his run of success in a sanctioned Modified Tuesday night. Justin Kay held off challenges from Cayden Carter and Joel Rust in winning the Arnold Motor Supply Hawkeye Dirt Tour main event at West Liberty Raceway. The victory paid $1,000 and came just before he completed the unique sweep by winning the Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Model nightcap. Carter, another two-division star, finished as the runner-up while Rust was third. Kurt Kile and new tour point leader Kelly Shryock completed the top five. “There’s no replacement for being out there and having a lot of laps. A lot of it is knowing what line to run and track conditions,” said Kay, who became a seven-time Deery winner at West Liberty in final race of the night. “The Modified guys were right behind me. Running, and winning two features wasn’t something I could have done without my crew guys. They were awesome.” Kay was pursued early first by [Read More]

VanDeest makes late pass for Urbana 5 checkers at Benton County

By Ryan Clark VINTON, Iowa (June 11) – Two last-lap passes and a photo finish provided for arguably the best night of racing so far this season at Benton County Speedway. A field of 105 race teams assembled for Sunday’s third annual Urbana 5 Memorial/Iowa Donor Network event, which celebrated the memory of five area youth killed in a car accident in Benton County. The Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, paying $1,500 to the winner, headlined the event. An extra $350 was also up for grabs for anyone who could beat Tony Olson, the winner of the race each of the last two seasons. It was pole sitter Sam Wieben surging to the early lead of the 20-lapper. He built a sizable advantage while Jared VanDeest and Joey Schaefer worked through traffic from mid-pack starts. Cautions on laps five and 14 kept the field bunched, however Wieben maintained the point throughout. VanDeest kept pace with the leader following the lap 14 restart and ran the high side while Wieben remained committed to the low groove. VanDeest surged ahead as the white flag waved and [Read More]
