Wild West Shootout checkers fly for Williamson in round 5

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Aug. 10) – The quarter-mile clay oval at Cottage Grove Speedway continued to be good to Jesse Williamson Tuesday night. Williamson sped to his second $1,000 win in five Wild West IMCA Modified Shootout starts. The four-time series champion now owns 14 career tour victories, with five coming a CGS.  Jake Mayden was the early leader in the 40-lap main event and held onto the position until being overtaken on lap nine.  Williamson prevailed despite multiple yellow flags. Collen Winebarger ended the race second with third going to Eston Whisler. Veteran Paul Rea was scored fourth with fifth going to Mayden.  The Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod main had several stoppages but one thing remained the same and that was that Ryan Peery was in fine and dominant form.  The California teenager took possession of the lead on the opening start. Peery successfully navigated the track to score his third Wild West win of the week and 11th feature on the year.  Ray Bloom and Matt Sanders were second and third, [Read More]

Hobscheidt has just enough in the tank, takes $5,000 Iron Cup IMCA Modified checkers

JEFFERSON, S.D. (Aug. 10) – All of eight tenths of a second made the difference in Monday night’s Iron Cup main event for IMCA Modifieds at Park Jefferson Speedway. Jacob Hobscheidt led the entire 35-lap feature but had to hold off a hard running Shane DeMey in the closing laps to pick up the $5,000 win by a fraction of a second. “I raced there a handful of times but never had any luck,” Hobscheidt said after matching his career-best payday. “The last four or five laps I was running out of fuel and doing whatever I could to keep the thing running.” Hobscheidt got the early jump on the field over fellow front row starter Bob Moore and cruised early. Action was fierce back in the back of the pack as DeMey working around the low side in coming from 10th starting.  DeMey finally moved around Moore and rookie Cody Thompson to secure the second spot but simply ran out of laps at the finish as Hobscheidt, already Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible, took [Read More]

Winebarger is first IMCA Modified repeat winner in Wild West Shootout

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE Grove, Ore. (Aug. 9) – Collen Winebarger became the first repeat IMCA Modified winner when the Wild West Shootout traveled to Cottage Grove Speedway Monday night.  The 40-lap feature got off to a rough start with a multi-car tangle on the initial green.  When racing resumed, Winebarger took over the lead and held onto the front spot through five restarts.  Winebarger witnessed a brief scare when he went off of the top of the final set of corners in lapped traffic on lap 30. He was beaten to the line by Jesse Williamson, but a yellow came out before the entire lap was considered complete, thus giving him back the lead. Winebarger dominated the rest of the distance Already Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible, he earned $1,000. Williamson was second, followed by Mark Carrell, Eston Whisler and Eric Ashley.  In his first-ever appearance at CGS, Ryan Peery was the juggernaut in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod main.  Peery won his second race of the week ahead of Dustin Comer, Aaron [Read More]

Towns tops Sunday field at Willamette for first Wild West IMCA Modified Shootout win

By Ben Deatherage  LEBANON, Ore. (Aug. 8) – The third night at Willamette Speedway was the Sunday night charm for Curtis Towns.  Towns topped the third event in as many nights to start the Wild West IMCA Modified Shootout, earning $1,000 and Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligibility.  He’d taken advantage of his inside front row starting position in the 40-lap feature, hoping to bounce back after failing to make the feature on Friday night.  Towns set a rapid pace but was eventually caught once he entered traffic.  Collen Winebarger put the pass on Towns on lap 14. Dominant the previous evening and looking to make it two victories in a row, the new leader had no real issues whether on an open race track or in traffic.   Unfortunately, Winebarger suffered a flat right rear tire with two laps to go. Towns was there to retake the lead and powered his way to his first career Wild West Modified Shootout checkered flag. Mark Carrell was second while Danny Lauer placed third. Eston Whisler and [Read More]

Winebarger dominates Wild West Shootout Round 2 for IMCA Modifieds at Willamette

By Ben Deatherage LEBANON, Ore. (Aug. 7) – Collen Winebarger proved the master of lapped traffic on night two of the Wild West IMCA Modified Shootout at Willamette Speedway on Saturday. When the action got started for the 40-lap IMCA Modified main event, Winebarger seized control of the top spot on the first lap. The race turned out to be one based on stamina as the lone caution was seen on lap seven. This presented heavy lapped traffic for the leaders to deal with and made things interesting from time to time.  Winebarger was briefly bottled up in traffic but managed to make a pivotal move to get through the tail end of the lead lap cars, then motored to win his ninth career Wild West Shootout event and record-setting fifth checkers at Lebanon. The win paid $1,000 to Winebarger, already Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible. Jeffrey Hudson was second while Eston Whisler finished third. Jerry Schram and Brian Thompson completed the top five. Skyler Winebarger, Collen’s younger brother, was master of the class [Read More]

That would be the venue to host the opening leg of the 2021 schedule. At the beginning of the 40-lap, $1,000 to win main event, Williamson took the top place position on the opening start. After that, the field underwent a long twenty-three-lap green flag run, bringing some traffic into play. Williamson was briefly harassed by some contenders but managed to carve his way through lapped traffic. Three stoppages took out any further contact with the back of the field and put more emphasis on the restarts.  Williamson was challenged briefly by Collen Winebarger. The two were briefly go side-by-side but Williamson, already Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible, kept him in check for his sixth straight win this season and career 13th in series action.  Winebarger held onto the [Read More]
