Boyd Grand Nationals IMCA Modified checkers worth two grand to Wojtek

BOYD, Texas (Oct. 11) – Three feet or so made the difference between Fred Wojtek’s biggest-paying IMCA IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature win and second place. Wojtek beat Charie Harmon to the checkers by that distance Saturday at Boyd Raceway’s Grand Nationals. The $2,000 victory put Wojtek on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I had a couple guys pull up next to me,” he said. “It was a close one there at the end with Charlie.” Wojtek had started the 25-lapper from outside the front row. Kevin Sustaire took over the lead near midway but exited with mechanical problems with 10 circuits left. That put Wojtek back in first and he stayed there despite Harmon’s best efforts. Harris wraps up title in closest finish in VSS history

(Oct. 11) – Jerald Harris passed Brian Lawson a few feet in front of the checkered flag to win in the closest finish in Virginia Sprint Series history Saturday at Shenandoah Speedway. The series champion’s margin of victory was so slim that the electronic scoring system was needed to decide the winner of the 14th and final IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour event of the season. Chris Ware and Anthony Linkenhoker paced the field to green with Linkenhoker out first and bringing along Brian Lawson. The top two were smooth and steady as Linkenhoker continued to lead until lap eight when Lawson got a better run in to turn one and went into the lead. Kay completes Deery Series title run with twin wins at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (Oct. 11) – Justin Kay couldn’t have scripted a better finish to his career first Deery Brothers Summer Series championship campaign. Kay won the final event of the 2014 IMCA Late Model tour Saturday during West Liberty Raceway’s Liberty 100 special. He followed that victory – his sixth in 14 series events – with another $3,000 run to the checkers in the pay/no points feature that followed. Both main events were 50 laps. Denny Eckrich, Nate Beuseling, Colby Springsteen and hard charger Ryan Dolan completed the top five in the series finale. Ray Guss Jr. and Todd Malmstrom were the early leaders before Beuseling took over for a long run at the front. Kay finally caught up on lap 43 and beat the 10th starting Eckrich to the checkers by a couple car lengths. Grand Nationals special is Oct. 11 at Boyd Raceway

BOYD, Texas – Top prize for the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds is $2,000 when Boyd Raceway hosts its annual Grand Nationals special on Saturday, Oct. 11. The feature is a qualifier for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star ballot. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMods both race for $1,500 to win, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $1,000 and Mach-1 Sport Compacts for $250. Entry fees are $50 for the Modifieds, $40 for Stock Cars and Southern SportMods, and $30 for Hobby Stocks. Pit gates and the grandstand both open at 4 p.m.. Hot laps are at 6 p.m. with racing to follow. Spectator admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for kids ages 6-11 and free for military personnel with ID and youngsters ages five and under. Fulton checkers give Fleming his second win of the 2014 Friesen Empire State Series

FULTON, N.Y. (Oct. 3) – Chris Fleming became the first repeat winner in the 2014 Friesen Chevrolet Empire State Series, leading all 25 laps of the Friday night main event at Fulton Speedway. The IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified tour victory paid $400. Fleming started outside row one in the Outlaw 200 Weekend feature. A long green flag run at the start got Fleming into lapped traffic before a series of cautions. The last restart came with three laps to go. “The track was really fast,” said Fleming. “I just tried to keep my momentum up and was able to pull away some after the final restart.” Keith Lamphere, tour point leader James Cornell, Gary Smith and Gary Roberts rounded out the top five. IMCA announces 2014 national, regional champions and rookies of the year

VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 6) – A who’s who of IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly racing will take their turns at the podium to tell about their 2014 championship campaigns during the national awards banquet next month. Zane DeVilbiss of Farmington, N.M., raced to his second national IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified title. He adds a bookend trophy to the hardware he won in 2010. Winners of career fifth national crowns were Mike Nichols of Harlan in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Shannon Anderson of Des Moines in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. Matt Looft of Swea City defended his Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod title. Sparked by an IMCA single division record 54 feature wins, Nate Coopman of Mankato, Minn., ruled again in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts. His first championship in that division came in 2011. Reutzel reigns again at Jackson Nationals

JACKSON, Minn. (Sept. 27) – Something about the Jackson Nationals brings out the best in Tad Reutzel. Reutzel led every time around the track in Saturday’s 20-lap IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event at Jackson Speedway in a program that doubled as the final night for the Redline Racing Parts North Star Series. The Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying checkers paid $1,500. Jason Andrews and Justin Luinenburg earned the same amount for Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock victories, respectively. Devin Smith’s IMCA Sunoco Stock Car win was also Jackson’s annual Doug Cellan Memorial event. Jay DeVries scored the $500 Mach-1 Sport Compact win. BEATRICE, Neb. (Sept. 26-27) – Two IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified drivers more than a little familiar with victory lane at Beatrice Speedway found their way there again during September Fest. Jordan Grabouski was the Friday night winner and Johnny Saathoff led the way to the Saturday checkers. Each Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying win was good for $1,500. Grabouski had won both the Spring Nationals main event and his career 100th IMCA feature at Beatrice earlier this season; Saathoff’s numerous accolades at that venue now include his career eighth victory in the traditional season-ending special. After starting fourth on opening night, Grabouski passed Cory Wray for the lead on the third of 25 laps. IMCA Modifieds headline Oct. 3-4 Mid-America Clash at Salina

SALINA, Kan. (Sept. 29) – IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds race for as much as $7,500 to win at Salina Speedway’s Mid-America Clash on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4. First place will pay $3,500 if there are 39 or fewer entries, $5,000 if there are between 40 and 74 entries, and $7,500 if there are 75 or more Modifieds entered in the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. Using the same guidelines, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods race for $1,000, $2,000 or $3,500 to win. IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks race for $500, $1,000 or $2,000 to win. Gemmill cashes in at Thunder On The Hill

By Larry Lowrey Jr. MAYETTA, Kan. (Sept. 19) – Troy Gemmill endorsed a check for $2,000 after winning the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature at Thunder Hill Speedway’s signature special. After getting the lead back from 12th starting Jordan Grabouski in traffic, Gemmill stretched the field out as the 30-lapThunder On The Hill main event wound down. A great battle for top five spots went on behind Gemmill. Cory Wray ended up in the runner-up spot with a solid run while Johnny Saathoff finished third. Scott Drake fell back and then battled his way back up to fourth and rounding out the top five was Clay Hale.
