Four Super Nationals champions get new engines

BOONE, Iowa – Four champions crowned at the 35th annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s will leave Boone Speedway with more than their place in dirt track racing history secured. Each of the main event winners on Saturday, Sept. 9 receives a new engine from Karl Performance or Karl Chevrolet as well. Modified, Northern SportMod or Hobby Stock champions who win titles with crate motors receive a new GM 604 or 602 crate from Karl Chevrolet. Drivers in those divisions winning with claim motors get engines from Karl Performance. All motors will be built to IMCA specifications and any additional services or parts desired are to be taken care of at the new owner’s expense. The Modified champion, if running a claim motor, gets a KPM CPH383-60D engine valued at $6,999. The Stock Car champion will receive a KPM 360 spec engine valued at $6,040.99. Fan Zone continues to be center of off-track activities during week of Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa – When attention turns from the race track, fans will have plenty to see and do throughout the week of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Located south of the main grandstands at Boone Speedway, the Fan Zone will be the location for numerous events each day of America’s Racin’ Vacation Sept. 4-9. Card games to determine the starting grid for Northern SportMod and Hobby Stock race of champions events will be held at approximately 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Monday’s Hobby Stock and Northern SportMod qualifying feature winners sign autographs at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Lutz visits victory lane at Natural Bridge

By Jim Haines NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (Aug. 19) – The Natural Bridge has been a popular destination for tourists but for racers and fans the track up the street is where to be. Scott Lutz became the latest visitor to victory lane at that popular destination when the Virginia Sprint Series visited Saturday night. With the laps winding down, Lawson went outside Mike Leraas for the lead and the front pair raced that way for two laps. That battle ended when Leraas and Lawson caught up with a lapped car and the three wouldn’t fit three-wide. Lawson slid over the hill to bring out the yellow and Lawson was sent to the rear. Yankee past champions round table is Sept. 2

By Jerry Mackey FARLEY, Iowa – The 40th annual Yankee Dirt track Classic will truly be a spectacular racing event and will honor the founder of the event, Al Frieden. The Farley Speedway Promotions group will host a past champions round table discussion in the Palace Ballroom on Saturday, Sept. 2 immediately following the charity auction, which will get underway at noon. Sprint Series of Oklahoma, URSS team for Longdale Speedway battle

(Aug. 22) – Race thirteen on the Sprint Series of Oklahoma IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car Series 2017 season is set for this coming Saturday, Aug. 26 at Longdale Speedway in a co-sanctioned event with the Kansas-based United Rebel Sprint Series. Saturday’s feature winner earns $1,000. As if he needed any more incentive to score his first victory of the season, Jake Martens unofficially comes into the night with 15-point lead over defending IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car national and Sprint Series of Oklahoma champion Andy Shouse. Daniels takes top step on podium at Dodge City’s IMCA SportMod Mayhem

(Aug. 19) – After finishing just one position short last year, Dustin Daniels reached the top step of the podium in Saturday’s IMCA SportMod Mayhem special at Dodge City Raceway Park. The checkers in the fourth annual event came along with a $1,000 top prize. Daniels turned the tables on Kaleb Roach after the latter beat him to the stripe in last year’s edition of Mayhem. Roach had a front row starting position in his bid for a second consecutive event win but Daniels denied him by rallying from eighth starting to take the victory. Roach settled for runner-up honors with Ronnie Hults racing from ninth to third. Jeff Kaup was fourth with Blaine Walt rallying from 18th to round out the top five. Brendon Gemmill landed his first local IMCA Modified feature win of the season while Reagan Sellard scored his third Dodge City IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock victory of 2017. Davenport is first to IMCA Modified checkers in final Iturriaga Memorial at Battle Mountain

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. (Aug. 19) – Doug Davenport came back to Nevada looking for redemption. He got that, plus the $1,000 IMCA Modified feature win at Battle Mountain Raceway’s Frankie Iturriaga Memorial. “I had the fastest car before cutting a tire at a $1,000 to win race at Winnemucca in April,” explained Davenport, from Vernonia, Ore., and newly qualified for the 2018 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. “I like traveling and racing at new and different places and got to thinking that I should go back down there and redeem myself.” Davenport ran third in the Friday show at Winnemucca behind Robert Miller and Cory Sample. He started inside row two at Battle Mountain on Saturday and led all 30 laps. “I had never seen the track before but it felt really good when we got there,” Davenport said. “Battle Mountain is similar to Sunset Speedway Park, which is right down the road from me (in Banks, Ore.) so we just went one gear shallower. Beer Hill Cup showcases talent, sportsmanship

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Aug. 18) – The final Beer Hill Cup was a typical thrilling race but the greatest accomplishment was an education for fans what a true level playing field can do for racing and what RaceSaver rules and purse structure do to give talented racers and crews a chance to compete every week on the ultimate level playing field. Champion Scott Ellerman is a perfect example as the talented veteran has remained competitive over many of the nearly 20 years PASS has been racing. Ellerman’s team and car owner Richard Snader run on a very limited budget and still manage to be highly competitive, holding off some excellent new talent on Friday night and throughout the series. By Brad Vores YORK HAVEN, Pa. (Aug. 20) – Nick Sweigart wired the field to post the win in the Sunday 20-lap Pennsylvania Sprint Series feature at Susquehanna Speedway. Sweigart’s first-ever win for car owner Randy Kaylor made him the 15th different winner in 29 IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car series races this season. Starting on the pole, Sweigart dominated while two late race cautions kept things interesting at the front. Kyle Smith, Darren Miller, Austin Bishop and Kassidy Kreitz rounded out the top five. Bubak is best in URSS Bob Salem Memorial finale

(Aug. 20) – Colorado’s Jake Bubak took the lead with two laps remaining to claim the United Rebel Sprint Series checkers on the final night of the annual Bob Salem Memorial Sunday at Oberlin Speedway. Bubak passed Zach Blurton for the runner-up position with five laps to go then caught the rear bumper of leader Taylor Velasquez with three laps remaining. One lap later, Bubak completed a slide job in turn one and led the last two times around the track to capture a $1,022 payday and his second URSS victory of the season. Velasquez settled for second while Nick Haygood came home third. Jed Werner came home fourth and earned $1,500 bonus for being the two-day point champion. Ty Williams rounded out the top five while Blurton rebounded from an earlier excursion off the top of the track to finish sixth.
