Scott makes right move for Vinton IMCA Modified Frostbuster win

VINTON, Iowa (April 9) – No way, figured Johnny Scott, did he have a realistic shot at winning Sunday’s IMCA Modified Frostbuster feature after drawing the 12th starting spot. Yes way. Scott slipped inside Kyle Brown for the lead on the 19th of 25 laps, then held Brown and Jason Wolla in check following a restart with four to go to win the headline event at Benton County Speedway. “I didn’t think there was any way, especially with so many good cars here, but we made the right move at the right time,” said Scott, also the $1,000 feature winner ahead of Brown at the opening night Frostbuster Friday at Marshalltown. “The bottom was dominant and I had to take the chance when Kyle bobbled a little.” The two made contact going into the first turn. Scott drove by for the eventual win, chased to the checkers by Brown, Wolla, Scott Hogan and 20th starting Joel Rust. “There was a little contact but it was not intentional. I don’t race like that. It was a racing deal,” Scott [Read More]

Deery Bros Late Model Summer Series

Despite heavy heart, Denny Eckrich gets Deery Series win at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (April 8) – After winning Saturday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at West Liberty Raceway, Denny Eckrich took time to remember friend Mike Humphrey, killed in a car accident earlier this week in Louisiana. “He helped me get into a Black Diamond (Chassis). He helped a lot of racers,” Eckrich said. “Mike was a good guy and he died too soon. There are a lot of heavy hearts tonight.” Eckrich led the last seven of 40 laps after taking the outside line around Jeremiah Hurst and Jesse Sobbing following a late restart. The $2,000 checkers were his IMCA Late Model tour career sixth; he also won the first series race held at West Liberty last year. Outside front row starter Spencer Diercks led the first 15 laps before slowing and watching Hurst motor by. Eckrich was part of a mid-race tangle with Jake Neal during their battle for second that left the left side of his car more than a little banged up but he soldiered on. Hurst and Sobbing got together [Read More]

Cordes grabs $1K at Independence Spring Break Opener

By Bucky Doren INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (April 8) – Troy Cordes kicked off his 2017 racing season at the Independence Motor Speedway with a $1,000 payday winning the Spring Break Opener on April 8, 2017. Cordes moved into the lead during the IMCA Modified main event on lap three. Mark Schulte applied heavy pressure in the closing laps but it was Cordes, already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, who was first to the checkered flag during the 25-lap feature. Schulte settled for second. Scott Hogan raced in the top five all night and finished third. Adam Johnson moved from the 14th starting spot to finish fourth and Jason Morehouse finished a great night by rounding out the top five. 2016 IMCA Sunoco Stock Car track champion Tom Schmitt wrestled the lead away from early race leader Lynn Panos on lap 14, and raced off to the win. Panos finished second. Justin Temeyer came home third followed by Jarod Weepie and Damon Murty. Tony Olson led flag to flag in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod [Read More]

Dickerson gets IMCA Modified win, Munoz gets career highlight at Boone Frostbuster

BOONE, Iowa (April 8) – After finishing repairs to the roof of his shop, Russ Dickerson put the finishing touches on his IMCA Modified. On Saturday, he finished first in the Frostbuster main event at his hometown Boone Speedway and started to turn his luck around with a $1,000 payday. “This was a pretty good way to start out the season and a good way to start the month,” said Dickerson, who’d lost the roof of his shop to a windstorm some four weeks ago. “We started eighth and everything worked out in our favor. We had some good luck for a change.” The new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier got the lead just after halfway in the 25-lapper. He ran the higher line until catching up with the back of the field, then used different lines to work his way through traffic. Jason Wolla, who’d won ahead of Dickerson in their heat, was second and Clint Luellen was third. Mike Van Genderen and Hunter Marriott completed the top five. “I saw Wolla several [Read More]

Scott is great late to win IMCA Modified feature at Marshalltown Frostbuster

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (April 7) – Johnny Scott was understandably impressed by the quality of the IMCA Modified feature field at Marshalltown Speedway’s Frostbuster special Friday night. The New Mexico native, now racing out of Cameron, Mo., was the most impressive, racing from 18th starting to top the $1,000 to win event ahead of Kyle Brown and Hunter Marriott. “There were a lot of good cars here tonight. We got a break when we got a caution with five or six laps to go and restarted seventh,” he said. “I stayed on the outside, ran side-by-side with Kyle and finally cleared him for the lead coming to the white flag.” “Everything worked out for us,” Scott added. “We’ve run in the top five at Marshalltown before and it feels good to finally win here.” Chris Simpson and Clint Luellen completed the top five finishers. Scott was already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. More than 160 cars were entered for the first of three weekend Frostbusters.
