BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 6, 2024) – Looking to earn a starting spot in the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s, Stock Car championship event, John Oliver Jr. continued a unique race day tradition in the pits Friday at Boone Speedway.
He ate five green olives.
“I started doing this a couple years ago. We stopped at a restaurant, I had five green olives and I went out and won,” said the West Burlington hotshoe, somewhat reluctant to share the secret of his success. “Then I had to go out and buy a jar of olives.”
A whole lot of olives later, Oliver is a contender for the national IMCA Sunoco Stock Car crown with 22 feature wins and track titles at 34 Raceway, Benton County Speedway and CJ Speedway.
“I started winning a Prelude feature on Saturday and that was really good luck for me,” said Oliver, also a 10-time winner and track champ in the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods at CJ this season. “I can’t say I’ve had bad luck, I haven’t had the car the way I needed it to be for Super Nationals. I tore it down and put it back together today.”
He’ll start outside row two in the 25th of 30 laps tonight.
“Our goals for Super Nationals are making the show, having fun and just take a vacation,” said Oliver, owner of a heating and air conditioning business.
Treats for Dalmatians Nali and Remi are also part of Oliver’s race day ritual.
