Oliver, Barnes win again at Lee County

By Brian Neal  DONNELLSON, Iowa (April 12) – Jeff Waterman began his pursuit of another Lee County Speedway track title with the opening night IMCA Modified feature victory.  Friday’s 20-lap Budweiser IMCA Modified main saw Dennis LaVeine and Dakota Simmons draw the front row. LaVeine took advantage of his spot to jump out into the lead over Andrew Schroeder and Simmons.  Schroeder looked under LaVeine over the next five laps, before the first caution of the race appeared. On the restart, LaVeine jumped back out front with Waterman, who started ninth, coming from fifth to second.  While LaVeine worked the bottom of the track, Waterman used the top to try and wrestle the lead away. Coming off turn four on lap nine, Waterman used his momentum off the top to edge LaVeine at the line to take over the top spot.  Waterman maintained his advantage following a lap 10 restart as Schroeder and LaVeine battled for second. By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 14) – Justin Kay was just in time to the checkers to win Friday’s second install­ment of Drive For Five for IMCA Sunoco Late Models at Lee County Speedway. Dennis Woodworth and Justin Kay drew the front row for the 25-lap feature, with Woodworth grabbing the early lead over Kay and Matt Ryan. The action was slowed for the first time of the race on lap three, as Sam Halstead spun to bring out the yellow.  On the restart, Kay slipped past Woodworth to take over the top spot.  While Kay set the pace out front, Woodworth, Ryan and Mark Burgtorf battled for the runner-up spot. An­thony Haines spun in on lap 15 to bring the action to a slow pace. By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (Sept. 11) – The Iowa Corn Growers Association Drive For 5 finale for IMCA Sunoco Late Models took place Sept. 11 at Lee County Speedway. This is the second year for this mini-series to be held, with defending race winner Justin Kay claiming the checkered flag in the 50-lap feature. Kay and Darin Duffy earned front row starts. Kay took advantage of his starting spot and jumped out into the early lead over Duffy and Matt Ryan. While Kay paced the field out front, Duffy, Ryan and Tommy Elston, who started fifth, battled for the runner-up spot. Action was slowed on lap nine for back-to-back cautions. The second restart saw Kay back out front with Elston overtaking Duffy for second. Two more quick cautions followed, with Kay staying in the lead and Duffy getting second back from Elston.
