Becerra remains perfect at Lee County Speedway

DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 7) – Austen Becerra raced to his third Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature wins in as many Friday night starts this season at Lee County Speedway.

Ryan Moore and Brandon Lambert led the field to the drop of the green flag. Lambert paced lap one over Logan Cumby, who started sixth, and Jim Gillenwater, who started eighth. Gillenwater slid past on lap three to take over the top spot.

Sean Wyett slipped by Gillenwater to take the lead on lap five only to have Gillenwater get him back on lap seven. On a restart, Becerra charged around the top of Gillenwater to grab the lead and started to pull away.

The field was brought back to Becerra’s back bumper on lap 15 for the final restart of the race. The side-by-side battle for the runner-up spot allowed Becerra to go on to claim his third win of the season at the track in three weeks of racing. Gillenwater won the battle for second and Wyett was third.

Mark Burgtorf topped the IMCA Sunoco Late Models and Michael Long scored his second IMCA Modified win of the season at Donnellson. Jason Cook collected the IMCA Sunoco Stok Car checkers, his second of 2021, and Ashton Blain was promoted to the top of the podium when the apparent Mach-1 Sport Compact winner was disqualified in post-race tech. 

Coming on Friday, May 14 will be the second round of the Iowa Corn Growers Association and Hinkle Auto Sales Drive For 5 qualifying nights, presented by Ideal Ready Mix, Floyd’s Waste Systems, J.J. Nichting Company Case IH, Triple Seven Trucking, Woodworth Attorney at Law, Triple R Performance Engines, Old Barn Taxidermy, Mike Campbell’s Body Shop & Towing, Donnellson Tire & Service, KQ92, and Big Country 103.1. Late Models and Modifieds will be racing for $1,000 to win, with draw/redraw being used to determine the line-ups. The Modified feature is a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. 

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and hot laps are at 7 p.m. with racing to follow.

Rain interrupts Lee County’s Friday show

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (Friday, August 4, 2023) – Lee County Speedway beat Mother Nature early, then had to try to beat her again once the program got started on Friday night during the final qualifying round for the Iowa Corn Growers Association IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5. Before Mother Nature cut the program short, two and more than half of another feature were completed, with all three drivers familiar to victory lane. First to take to the track was the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature, with Kevin Koontz and Peter Stodgel scheduled to be on the front row. But when Stodgel had to be pushed from staging, Chad Krogmeier moved to the outside of the front row for the start. Krogmeier took advantage of this to jump out into the lead over Jeremy Pundt and John Oliver Jr., who started eighth. Roberts is latest IMCA Modified winner at Lee County

By Brian Neal  DONNELLSON, Iowa (April 26) – Bill Roberts Jr. became the third different IMCA Modified winner at Lee County Speedway this season Friday night. In and out of the lead in the 20-lap Budweiser IMCA Modified feature, Roberts saw John Oliver Jr. use his high side momentum coming off turn four to edge ahead coming to the white flag.  The two raced through turns one and two and down the backstretch side-by-side. Oliver drifted a little high coming off turn four to get the checkers, which allowed Roberts to go under him for his first win of the season at the track.  Jeremy Pundt was the Donnellson Tire & Service IMCA Stock Car winner and Daniel Fellows was first in the Roberts Tire Center IMCA Northern SportMod main. Brandon reu topped the Discount Tire & Service IMCA Sport Compact feature.

Lee County Drive For 5 schedule adjusted

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that took all of April’s and most of May’s scheduled race events at Pepsi Lee County Speedway, promoters Brian and Marcie Gaylord have announced several schedule changes to the Drive For 5 program for IMCA Sunoco Late Models. There will still be five $1,000 to win feature qualifying nights to help set the stage for a potential $5,000 IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5 payday in mid September at the track. Four of the qualifying nights will take place on weekly Friday night events, on June 12, June 26, July 17 and Aug. 21, with one qualifying night on Saturday, Aug. 1. Drivers who compete in at least four of those events will be eligible to run for a top prize of $5,000 in the Saturday, Sept. 12 finale.  Shottenkirk Parts Express, local sponsor of the division, is the title sponsor of Drive For 5 as well.
