Simmons scores first career IMCA Modified win

DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 10) – Dakota Simmons raced to the first IMCA Modified victory of his career Friday at Pepsi Lee County Speedway.

Levi Smith and Simmons led the field to green in the Budweiser IMCA Modified feature, with Sim­mons grabbing the early lead. Simmons started to pull away from the rest of the field before the first and only caution appeared on lap eight.

On the restart, Simmons jumped back out front with Bill Roberts Jr. and John Oliver Jr. close be­hind. Oliver got past Roberts on lap 10 but by then Simmons had built up a straightaway lead.

Coming to the white flag, Oliver had cut Simmons’ lead down to about three car lengths but that was as close as he could get, as Simmons went on to claim his first career Modified win.

Tommy Elston won the 20 lap I-Smile Silver IMCA Late Model main event despite the best efforts of challenger Brian Harris. 

Fifth-starting David Brandies topped the Donnellson Tire & Service IMCA Stock Car feature and Daniel fellows drove to his third straight Robert’s Tire Center IMCA Northern SportMod victory. 

Josh Barnes motored to his second Discount Tire & Service IMCA Sport Compact win of 2019.

Next Drive For Five qualifier is Friday at Lee County

DONNELLSON, Iowa ­– IMCA Sunoco Late Models and IMCA Modifieds both race for $1,000 to win in their next Drive For Five qualifier this Friday at Lee County Speedway. The June 25 feature is a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier for the Modifieds. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts are also on the card. Pit gates open at 5:30 p.m. and hot laps are at 7 p.m. with racing to follow. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors 60 and over, $5 for students ages 11-17 and veterans, and free for kids 10 and under. Pit passes are $30, or $20 for kids ages 7-13, $10 for kids ages 4-6 and $5 for three and under.  The Friday show at Donnellson will be broadcast by DoneRight.TV.  The track website is www.leecountyspeedway.com.

Long stays hot at Pepsi Lee County Speedway

By Brian Neal  DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 5) – Michael Long was back in Pepsi Lee County Speedway’s victory lane after holding off Mark Burgtorf in the Friday night feature for IMCA Modifieds.  Long and Jardin Fuller led the field to the green flag, Long jumping into the lead over Fuller and Mark Burgtorf. Burgtorf and Denny Eckrich both got by Fuller and went to work on chasing down Long. However, Long pulled away before the first caution appeared on lap 13. On the restart, Long stayed out front with Burgtorf and Eckrich taking chase. The action was slowed for the second and final time for a yellow on lap 17.  Long then held off Burgtorf for the win. Austin Howes was third. Austen Becerra went three-wide for the lead, then outran Jim Gillenwater for the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod victory.  Coming up Friday, June 12 will be the first of five Drive For 5 qualifying nights for the IMCA Sunoco Late Models. Kay defends Lee County Drive For 5 finale title

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (Sept. 11) – The Iowa Corn Growers Association Drive For 5 finale for IMCA Sunoco Late Models took place Sept. 11 at Lee County Speedway. This is the second year for this mini-series to be held, with defending race winner Justin Kay claiming the checkered flag in the 50-lap feature. Kay and Darin Duffy earned front row starts. Kay took advantage of his starting spot and jumped out into the early lead over Duffy and Matt Ryan. While Kay paced the field out front, Duffy, Ryan and Tommy Elston, who started fifth, battled for the runner-up spot. Action was slowed on lap nine for back-to-back cautions. The second restart saw Kay back out front with Elston overtaking Duffy for second. Two more quick cautions followed, with Kay staying in the lead and Duffy getting second back from Elston.
