Kossuth County hosts Hovinga Memorial

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (July 15) – To say that Kelly Shryock’s racing career has been special would be a huge understatement. The veteran driver reached yet another milestone on July 15 at Kossuth County Speedway as he earned his 500th career victory. The milestone win came with a little icing on the cake for Shryock as the Beck’s Hybrid IMCA Sunoco Stock Car Special paid a cool $1,000 to the victor on Thursday evening.  Kevin Opheim and Ryan Watnem brought the 16-car field to the starting line as Watnem jumped out to the early lead. The caution flag appeared on lap number three and Donavon Smith became the new leader after the restart.  The yellow flag came out one lap later again but Smith continued to hold the lead. By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (July 29) – Returning to the home of its birthplace five years ago, night number two of the Hunting With Heroes Salute to Veterans was a huge success as Cody Laney in the IMCA Modifieds and Kelly Shryock in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars were the big winners of the huge show at the Kossuth County Speedway. The grandstand was packed with many veterans and race fans for the exciting night of dirt track racing.  Laney was the biggest winner of the evening money-wise as he led all 20 laps in the Modified feature to earn the $4,500 first place check. The 24-car field did a great job as the race went green to checkered without a hitch. Laney, who started on the inside of the front row, and Zane DeVilbiss, who manned the outside of the front row, broke away early from the field.  DeVilbiss stayed close early but had nothing for Laney, already Fast Shafts All-Star qualifying eligible, earned the win. But the Marshall, Minn. driver was the winner of the $2,000 to win special at the oval to highlight an exciting evening of dirt track racing on Thursday, June 15. “I raced here opening night of 2002 in my Stock Car and had the lead late, thinking I was going to win,” said Horejsi, already B & B Racing Chassis All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible. “But I got a flat tire with two laps to go so I came back the next week because I thought the track owed me one.” “This feels really good, especially with my last win here in a stock car coming 21 years ago.
