Last-corner pass lifts Humphries to Virginia Sprint Series checkers

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (April 11) – Tom Humphries was the opening night winner Saturday, in the Virginia Sprint Series lidlifter at Shenandoah Speedway. The IMCA Eagle Motor Sports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour started off the way last year ended, with a last corner pass being made for the victory. Chris Ware and Charlie Ware paced the field to green with Chris out first and Anthony Linkenhoker right behind. Linkenhoker was smooth a lane up and on lap three made his way to the front, bringing Ryan Price along as Humphries with Jerald Harris rounded out the bunch Laps clicked off as Linkenhoker stayed out front and Price was trying everything to get by and Humphries pressured in third. Halfway flags were shown with Linkenhoker still leading but Price going even lower until he jammed an inside move and got the lead. Humphries made his way to second with Harris third and lapped cars coming into play as the white flag waved. Turn three provided the opening for Humphries as they closed up on [Read More]

Rogers holds on for RPM checkers

By Mike Hughes HAYS, Kan. (April 11) – After four runner-up finishes already in 2015, Jason Rogers finally made it to victory lane in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division but had to hold off Chad Sterling to do it on opening night at RPM Speedway. Sterling led the opening lap before Rogers took the lead on lap two.  Rogers was able to hold on to the front spot with Sterling trying high and low to make a pass. As the lead duo came out of turn four to the checkers, Sterling made a charge but came up half a car length short as Rogers held on. Shaylon Holloway finished third. More than 100 race teams were on hand for the Saturday show at Hays. Cody Gearhart led all 20 laps in the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature and finished a straightaway ahead of Joe Cleveland. Defending track champion Tyler Frye of Belleville started the points season with a trip to victory lane in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main event. He passed lap [Read More]

Davis takes Hobby Stock honors at DCRP

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (April 11) – Cody Davis worked his way past early leader Zach McLemore on the ninth round then held off a late charge from Reagan Sellard to win the inaugural 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature by half a car length Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park. While Sellard settled for second, Matt O’Hair filled out the podium in third. After catching a timely caution two laps into the IMCA SportMod main, Jeremy Sigler led the distance in the 20-lapper to capture his first career win in the division. Sigler outdueled Jason Lunow on the opening circuit to nab the early lead, only to have Lunow slip under on the third round for the lead. But after a caution that put Sigler back out front, there was no stopping his No. 21J as he raced virtually unchallenged to the checkered flag ahead of Lunow with 10th-starter Jared Baird third. Michael Pepper turned in a dominant performance to win the 12-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event, leading all the way to [Read More]

Deery Bros Late Model Summer Series

Kay continues Deery streak at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (April 11) – Justin Kay got back in the groove Saturday at West Liberty Raceway. A week after exiting early with mechanical issues in the Deery Brothers Summer Series opener, the defending champion led the last 26 of 40 laps in winning the second installment of the 2015 IMCA Late Model tour. He’s now won three straight, and four of the last five Deery features held at West Liberty. Kay’s latest checkers, his career 10th, were good for $3,000. Scott Fitzpatrick, Brian Harris, Andy Nezworski and Andy Eckrich were next across the stripe. Harris had started 21st; Kevin Kile started 22nd and finished sixth. Ron Boyse took the green from outside row one and led the first lap; pole starter Nezworski let the next 13 times around the oval, before the only caution of the night came out. Kay, who had worked his way to third from 10th, passed both Boyse and Nezworski following the ensuing restart. He got into heavy lapped traffic with 10 to go but still took the win well [Read More]

Madden’s IMCA Stock Car on display at Monster Jam shows

By Edward Anschutz GREEN BAY, Wis. – Evan Madden will have his 2015 Wolfe Racing Chassis IMCA Sunoco Stock Car on display for the Monster Truck show at the Resch Center in Green Bay this weekend. Madden’s crew chief Brenan Parkos, who is a professional quad racer, was approached by Monster Jam promoters in search of what Wisconsin fans are into. The answer was easy for Parkos: “Dirt track racing!” Madden will have his black and green racing machine on display for the three Monster Jam shows Friday and Saturday, April 11-12. He is rumored to have a few hot laps in store for the crowd. “This is a bucket list for me, I’ve been a huge Grave Digger fan since I was a kid and I’m looking forward to seeing that monster truck up close while getting my sponsors some extra exposure,” Madden said. “They gave me free passes and full access to anywhere I want to go. That’s pretty cool.” Madden is planning on racing full-time at Thunderhill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay in 2015. [Read More]

Stone returning to Merced in borrowed Modified

MERCED, Calif. – Paul Stone would rather drive someone else’s car than sit and watch the races at Merced Speedway on Saturday night. Because building his new IMCA Modified is taking longer than expected, Stone found another seat to sit in. He’ll be driving a car owned by Jack Mounce of Merced for the second time this season. “It’s like when you’re on the road and you are sleeping in a bed that isn’t yours. It never feels quite as good as the one you have at home,” Stone said. “An unfamiliar car adds an extra challenge to driving.” Stone, who is known nationally in the ranks of IMCA, will make Mounce’s car more like his own as the season progresses. Though the new car was all assembled in his garage early last week, it was unassembled by the week’s end. Stone is a perfectionist. He disassembled the car to have the parts powder-coated. The colorful coating will add extra protection to the car’s chassis. “I don’t think the new car will be seen that [Read More]

Foulger first in epic Antioch battle

ANTIOCH, Calif. (April 4) – Troy Foulger and Michael Paul Jr. waged a side-by-side battle that lasted half the feature in IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified racing Saturday at Antioch Speedway. “The track was perfect – with two grooves to make it a great race – I had so much fun,” Foulger said after having Paul, Jr. outside his passenger window lap after lap, with no chance to pass him. “I finally figured if I open up the straightaway, it would help me when I entered the corner.” Foulger, who started sixth, got by Paul and went on to the checkered flag. “It was a good race – but it would have been better if I won,” Paul laughed. “My car was loose (handling) and his was better. Troy just got under me and would not let go.” Paul studied the track to maintain his advantage. His car being loose meant he wanted to stay out of the driest groove on the race track. “I was hunting for moisture, looking for any part of the [Read More]
