Schrader takes on Salina Speedway foes tonight

By Dusty Wiegert SALINA, Kan. – Every once in a while, a new face will show up and immediately make an impact at the Salina Speedway on any given Friday. Tonight (Aug. 14) the new face is a familiar one to race fans around the country as former NASCAR driver and dirt enthusiast Ken Schrader will tackle the central Kansas 3/8-mile oval. It will be the first time that a NASCAR star past or present has visited the track to compete. Current Sprint Cup driver Kasey Kahne visited almost 16 years ago to the day, but was still a few years away from beginning his NASCAR career. Fairmont Raceway hosts 50th anniversary celebration program Friday

FAIRMONT, Minn. – Fairmont Raceway will host its 50th anniversary celebration race program on Friday, Aug. 14. The evening will be jam-packed with both racing and entertainment excitement. All are invited to join in the celebration. The grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. and hot laps at 7 p.m. precede the 2015 hall of fame induction and anniversary race program. Spectator admission is $12 for adults and free for students. Track champions spanning the half-century of racing at Fairmont will be on hand and will meet and greet with fans prior to the races. Also featured will be Fairmont Raceway Hall of Fame members and past drivers. Providing musical entertainment and serving as the VIP trophy presenter will be Miss America 1977 Dorothy Benham. Fan Appreciation is Sunday at Seymour

A full five-division program, plus spectator eliminators, is on the program sponsored by Beavers Hut in Freedom. Racing is at 6 p.m.

Ward outruns rain at Tri-City

AUBURN, Mich. (Aug. 7) – A.J. Ward beat the rain and the rest of the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified field Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway. As the green flag waved, Kody Johnson led the pack into turn one but Matt Szecsodi had the lead when the lap was scored. Szecsodi ran in front for more than half the race but closing in on him was Ward, who took over the point on lap 12. A lap later, the rain starting falling heavier, the cars started sliding on the wet clay and the race was called with seven circuits left. Szecsodi came close to picking up his first feature win but wound up second to Ward. Chad Wernette finished third, followed by Kody Johnson and Myron DeYoung.

Jeff Anderson rules Stuart Hobby Stocks

By Josh Reynolds STUART, Iowa (Aug. 9) – He’s been to victory lane a lot of times since, but Jeff Anderson won his first IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature in 25 years Sunday at Stuart Speedway. Anderson eased away from the pack and Austin Luellen made it to second as the white flag flew. Matt Webb, Jeff James and finally Joshn Gilman ran at the front of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified pack. Nick Roberts made it close at the end but couldn’t catch Gilman and settled for second. Marcus Fagan checked out on his IMCA Sunoco Stock Car foes. Kody Havens was the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod winner and Jacob Reiter ran away from the rest of the Mach-1 Sport Compact field. Next week will be the second annual Richard Welch “Bones” Memorial presented by Jorgensen Custom Hay Services. Northern SportMods will race for $1,000 to win.

Mather takes Cedar County win, Brown is new Hawkeye Dirt Tour point leader

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Colt Mather became the seventh different winner in as many different Hawkeye Dirt Tour events Tuesday night while Kyle Brown became the new point leader with one race left in the series for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. Mather started outside the front row and led all 30 laps of the Cedar County Raceway show. The only caution came out on the third circuit. Justin Kay, who would go on to win the Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Model main event later in the program, closed the gap on Mather but finished a car length off the pace. Mather’s win paid $1,000 and put him on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Mitchell Morris, Brad Dierks and Mike Burbridge completed the top five. Kay continues Deery dominance with Cedar County checkers

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Justin Kay nearly had two trophies to show for his Tuesday night efforts at Cedar County Raceway. Kay won his sixth Deery Brothers Summer Series feature of the season, adding to his lead in the IMCA Late Model tour point standings. He’d run second in the Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature for Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds earlier in the evening. Dan Shelliam started outside row two in the 50 lap Deery Series main event and led the first 14 times around the Tipton oval. The third starting Kay drove by the next time around and was not challenged. Restarts at midway and on lap 39 took out lapped traffic and Kay’s margin of victory was most of 10 car lengths. The victory was Kay’s career 15th and paid $3,000. Shelliam matched his career best finish in second – he’d also been runner-up to Kay at Jackson County Speedway on June 9 – and Ray Guss Jr. was third. Kevin Kile was fourth. Southern Oregon to host $800 to win IMCA Modified race Aug. 15

By Ben Deatherage WHITE CITY, Ore. – On Saturday, Aug. 15, Southern Oregon Speedway will host the $800 to win Tune Up For The Lon Skinner Memorial special for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. This event will feature a promotion for children with kids 12 years and younger getting into the races for free. Modifieds are a staple at Southern Oregon Speedway with some of the most storied drivers coming from this region of the state. Jon DeBenedetti, Dane Smith, Bruce Rayburn, Mark Wauge, Monte Bischoff, Jeremy Richey, Brian Poppa, Albert Gill, Tom Glover and other chauffeurs have cut their teeth at this facility and went on to perform successful feats across the Western United States. The Lon Skinner Memorial is one of the crown jewels of IMCA Modified racing in the West and fans are guaranteed there will be some very talented drivers headed to White City on Aug. 15 to get valuable track time. Barr wins at Abilene for career first SST victory

ABILENE, Texas (Aug. 8) – Even after Adam Barr won his Saturday night Sprint Series of Texas heat at Abilene Speedway, crew chief Josh Freeman saw room for improvement. Some tinkering produced a second place finish in the dash. Barr then went out and promptly won the 20-lap main event, his career-first SST victory. “It was amazing,” Barr said following the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car triumph. “To be able to pull something like this off against this level of competition was an honor, and something I’ll always cherish.” Barr started outside row four and was up to second just before a lap nine yellow. Howell best at Boyd again in Sprint Series of Texas show

BOYD, Texas (Aug. 7) – To absolutely no one’s surprise, Jason Howell was happy to see the Sprint Series of Texas pay a return visit Friday to Boyd Raceway. Howell motored from 10th starting to win his third IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour event of the season. The defending champion had also taken the checkers when the SST opened at his “home track” back in April. “I took the outside line to get to the front and passed teammate Danny Merrell on the bottom to take the lead about midway,” said Howell. “Luckily, there was enough room for me down there.” Merrell ended as the runner-up, close enough to keep Howell from feeling comfortable as the 20-lapper wound down. “I felt like second place was right behind me,” Howell admitted. “I ran like a dog with it’s tail stuck between his legs.” Cody Whitworth was third and Michelle Melton took fourth.
