Tulare checkers are Pombo’s Western RaceSaver first

TULARE, Calif. (May 4) – Michael Pombo didn’t lead the most laps, just the one that mattered the most Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway. Pombo passed older brother Albert on the final circuit of a caution-free 25-lap contest to win his career-first Western RaceSaver Sprint Series feature. He’d run third most of the way, catching Mauro Simone for second on the 18th lap; Pombo made his move to the front coming out of turn two on the white flag lap and took the checkers by a margin of just over three tenth’s of a second. “It was like a dream come true. Fans appreciate Cottage Grove winners Mayden, McHargue

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (May 4) – Fan Appreciation Night IMCA winners Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway were Jake Mayden and Buddy McHargue. In Mohawk Metal IMCA Modified competition, defending track champion Mayden returned to victory lane. The Springfield chauffeur became the third different winner in as many races in the division while Evan Britton posted an impressive second. Buddy McHargue bested the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod field to become the third different winner in as many races so far this year. David Schmidt posted a second-place effort.

Hudson, Sanders win IMCA openers at Southern Oregon

By Don Martin II WHITE CITY, Ore. (May 4) – Jeffrey Hudson and Matt Sanders opened the 2019 season with IMCA feature wins Saturday at Southern Oregon Speedway. Hudson, the 2018 sprint car runner-up, landed a full-time ride in an IMCA Modified for this season. He took the lead from rookie Justin Foux early on and held off the rapidly approaching Mark Wauge for the win. The last 16 laps went without a yellow flag and Hudson had a good lead, but Wauge slowly began to chip away at the advantage. The laps ran out, however, before Wauge could get close enough to attempt a pass. Sanders beat race long leader Justin McCreadie back to the line in a photo finish to win the 20 lap Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod main, contested by 21 drivers. Dulin scores second straight Stock Car win at Maquoketa

Terry Dulin raced through the GRE / REV Chassis IMCA Stock Car field Saturday evening at Maquoketa Speedway and picked up his second consecutive 15-lap victory. “The track is fast and this car really stuck,” Dulin said in Hoker Trucking/C&W Trucking /Kam Wraps Victory Lane. “We knew Dustin (Vis) would be coming and we’re sorry he broke, but it’s always fun to race here and especially win.” Vis sped from the tail to second, but pulled to the infield with issues late in the race. Dulin took the lead from Jimmy Comins on lap six as the top six all were within a few car lengths. Cesar conquers 141 Stock Car opener

By Greg Aregoni FRANCIS CREEK, Wis. (May 4) – Brian Cesar liked the idea of starting up front in the season-opening IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature at 141 Speedway. He liked even better that every lap led was $30. Cesar decided to take charge of the show and led every lap en route to the 20 lap win. Cesar had to take every challenge that former champion Brett Wenzel threw at him. Wenzel used various lines to try and get around Cesar but could never get enough momentum. Cesar took home $910 for the win which included lap leader money. Wenzel settled for second. Benji LaCrosse already has his new car figured out early, dominating a stacked field of 38 IMCA Modifieds. The win netted him a $990 pay day, which included lap leader money and extra money from Ricky Lemmens. Jones masters traffic at Lincoln County

(May 4) – Grabbing the lead while working through lapped traffic, Tanner Jones won the dash to the finish in the Herrick Auto & Marine IMCA Hobby Stock feature Saturday at Lincoln County Raceway. Jones started in the third row, worked his way into contention and then made the right choices through traffic to garner the lead for the final four laps and a trip to the winner’s circle. Leading the way up to relinquishing the point position to Jones was Nate Refior, who lost momentum and needed minor repairs after the lap 11 incident with traffic. Pike prevails at Eagle

By Greg Soukup EAGLE, Neb. (May 4) – Gunnar Pike was first to the checkers in the Saturday Sam’s Club IMCA Northern SportMod feature at Eagle Raceway. Pike quickly put his no. 25 machine out front, followed by Adam Vrbka, Derek Hall and Roger Sluka. Hall passed Vrbka on lap two, Shawn Harker cracked the top four on lap four and on the restart following a lap 10 caution, Harker moved up to third and then advanced to second the following lap. Arie Schouten put his ride into fourth with seven laps remaining. Nobody could catch Pike despite a series of late cautions. Schouten moved up to third on the final circuit to make the top four Pike, Harker, Schouten and Vrbka. Wright is all right at Bethany

By Rick Staley BETHANY, Mo. (May 4) – Chris Wright found the right way around Bethany Speedway Saturday night, en route to the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature win. The field of 21 was slowed by just a single caution. R.J. Dishong took the front early only to see Wright roar past. Wright continued to lead as Coleman Browning challenged both high and low but could not find a way around. As the only yellow flag of the feature flew, Colton Nelson used the restart to his advantage, got by Browning for second and set his sights on the leader. Wright, however, went on to pick up the win with Nelson second and Browning third. Chad Clancy cruised to the IMCA Modified victory and Steve Starmer got the best of tenacious Carson Masoner for top IMCA Sunoco Stock Car honors.

Allen aces IMCA Modified field at Crystal

CRYSTAL, Mich. (May 4) – The race was for second Saturday night, as Chance Allen checked out on the rest of the IMCA Modified field at Crystal Motor Speedway.
